My boyfriend surprised me with a tour of Pasados for Valentine's day and I was super excited…read morebecause I love animals and supporting organisations that care for them. Our tour guide Maddie was super knowledgeable and was able to tell us how every animal came to the sanctuary. She was super upbeat and articulate in a way that showed deep care for the animals. The tour is a lot of hills and I appreciate that they provided a golf cart for the people in our tour group with limited mobility. In every aspect of our experience it seemed Pasado's put accessibility first. But the tour itself is so heartbreaking. The first thing my boyfriend said when we got back to our car is that this is the most depressing animal sanctuary experience he's ever had. And I agree, it was hard to stay upbeat and have a cute romantic experience while our tour guide essentially described horrific cases of animal cruelty for two hours. I learned so many great things on the tour and I'd definitely love to come back here to adopt a cat or volunteer. I just think it definitely wasn't the romantic Valentine's day experience we were looking for.

The staff were so compassionate and understanding our grief. Another time, we had just adopted a kitty and she found my husband's fishing pole and got a hook in her mouth (catfish? Please look into other veterinary options before bringing your pet here. This facility operates…read moreunder corporate/private equity ownership, and in my experience, the priority is extracting maximum revenue from pet owners in vulnerable, emotional situations rather than providing reasonable, compassionate care. Their billing practices are aggressive and egregious. For example, when an animal is hospitalized, you are not only billed for the medication itself, but they also charge an exorbitant dispensing fee, upwards of $50 or more each individual time a single pill is administered. These routine administrative markups accumulate rapidly and feel designed to take advantage of hospitalized pets whose owners have no choice but to rely on inpatient care. They also frequently over-bill and you need to go through each bill with a fine-tooth comb to ensure it is correct. It is quite obvious that there are internal leadership mandates to maximize billing. We went through the heartbreaking process of trying to treat my cat's lymphoma. In the end, despite spending over $20,000, the treatments were unsuccessful and we lost our cat. The financial strain made an already devastating ordeal so much more painful. In addition there were frequent unprofessional incidents with staff or doctors that required escalation. Escalation lead to zero results whatsoever. If your pet needs emergency or specialty care, consider alternatives like Timberline or independent, local practices that are not controlled by foreign conglomerates or private equity firms focused purely on profit margins.

I would like to have been able to post a good review for Evan Bonner. But, unfortunately, I can't…read more I left with no idea what, if any, training my horse received. Evan was not forthcoming with any information on what exactly he was working on with my horse; and, if I asked I received an evasive reply. The couple of times that I saw him do anything with my horse was a for few minutes during a couple of my so called lessons. I call them so called lessons because Evan either sat and stared at his phone during most of the lesson, or he went off on a nonstop talk that had nothing to do with the lesson or my horse. I also went to a clinic thinking I would learn useful exercises to do with my horse. As with my lessons, he seemed pretty much disinterested, and frequently went off on one of his endless lectures that was not at all related to the clinic. He even said he got bored attending horsemanship clinics put on by other trainers. We did get a nice lunch, though. After two months, I was a few thousand dollars poorer, and not at all sure my horse had improved or learned much. I left with the belief that Evan is totally burned out with horse training, and would rather be spending his time with his new interest of becoming a ferrier. Carrie his wife, however, is very pleasant and accommodating. And, the facility is a good place for boarding. The horses are fed good quality alfalfa, there are automatic watering devices, the stalls are cleaned daily, there is a nice wash rack area, there is daily turnout in large areas, and the facilities are very clean. In all, the horses are very well kept.

Over the years I have adopted many best friends from the Skagit Valley Humane Society and every…read moreexperience was a positive one. They are a no kill shelter. Since our area has a high adoption rate, this facility takes out of state dogs from over crowded shelters. What an incredible program! You can find dogs from California, Texas, all over. The new facility is clean, well setup and bright. The animals are all well cared for and the staff is very friendly. They were honest about any issues they had observed with the dogs & had temperament tested them, I really appreciated that. Coming into the shelter at an older age and with several (treatable) medical conditions, some shelters would have chosen to put the two old gals I recently adopted down, I am forever grateful Skagit did not. They are full of energy (I guess no one told them they are old) & joy. Every day is better with them as my companions. Thank you Skagit Humane Society staff and volunteers for all you do!

I went to the Humane Society of Skagit Valley a few weeks ago hoping to adopt a dog. The front desk…read morestaff was really friendly and helpful -- they took their time and pointed me toward some sweet dogs that seemed like a good match. While I was there, I noticed a little pug and asked about her. They told me she wasn't available for adoption. I could see why -- her butt was prolapsed and there was liquid poop and blood all over her kennel. She was panting, whining, and frantically trying to get out. It was really upsetting to see. I spoke with the manager, who told me not to worry, that they had it under control and the dog was fine. I left feeling terrible. I came back a few days later and the poor pug was still in the same condition -- prolapse, bloody diarrhea, the whole thing. She still looked miserable. I'm really concerned that they don't have the animals' best interest at heart. A prolapsed rectum is painful, and there was clearly blood coming from her. I just don't understand how a person could look at that and think it's okay to leave her like that. This experience has me seriously questioning the level of care the animals are getting. I wanted to support the shelter, but I left feeling heartbroken and worried. I'm still looking to adopt a dog, but after this experience I don't feel confident adopting from here.

Mystic Mountain Retreat is fantastic. Our boxer "Trey" has always been a shy girl, but she took to…read moreMMR very quickly. Now we board her there occasionally even when we're not travelling, simply because she loves her trips to "doggie camp" so much. Cindy and her team are great people, well-attuned to the animals under their care and highly knowledgeable. The first time we brought Trey there, she was so excited that she got a kind of doggy snuffle-hiccup thing going, which had me visibly worried. One of Cindy's staffers told me not to worry, put her hand over Trey's face for a couple of seconds, and the snuffle-hiccups went away. Very reassuring. The folks at MMR are very skilled at sizing up each dogs' social character and needs, and they divide the dogs up into compatible play groups. I love that Trey gets structured social time with other dogs. Since she's our only pup, she spends most of her time as a furry person (rather than as a dog), and it makes us happy that she gets a chance to really be a doggie sometimes. Trey has chronic health issues and is usually on 3 or more types of medication at any given time, and also requires special physical care on a daily basis. Mystic Mountain Retreat is the only place I trust to take care of all of her needs. MMR is a 1-hour drive from Kirkland/Redmond, which is a real pain. But believe me, it's worth it. MMR does partner with pet taxi services, though we've never taken advantage of this.
