As you enter the market you will be greeted by the same smell of fresh fish that has filled my childhood memories of this place. Pets World offers a wide range of products for pet owners and prospective pet owners alike. They've got hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits on offer if you fancy getting yourself a furry friend or you just want to gawp at something cute for a few minutes. As well as this they will be able to provide you with all the cages, hutches, food, toys, and supplies you may need for your pet. As with all the traders in the old Cardiff Market, Pets World is an expert in its field, so they will be able to offer expert advice and guidance that you know you can trust.

Ok so I'm not a particularly animally person as in I'm not big on pets. Tthe reason I went to Pet…read moreWorld is because I just happened to be out with my friend who was getting supplies for his Hamster. Overall the stall has large selection of stock including cages, toys, treats, food and of course animals. I had visited once before and if memory serves they had kittens for sale but sadly they weren't there this time. There was however an array of birds which were sat about chirping and my friend was able to get some nutty seedy type things for the Hamster which weren't that bad for value. This shop can be easily located on the balcony in the market so there should be no problem in finding it if you find yourself in need of straw and sawdust.

When I left home, my pets all stayed with my mum. It's their home and they're happy there so I…read morewould never dream of uprooting them and bringing them to Cardiff. Still, I miss them all like crazy and none of the places I've lived in here allow pets so there's this huge animal-shaped hole in my life. Pets at Home provides some relief from this. Firstly, and most obviously, I get to go and enjoy the cute animals they have there. My favourites are the guinea pigs and the Roborovski hamsters, and I can quite easily spend a good hour in there debating whether my landlord would notice if I bought one. I am eternally disappointed that there are no mice here, but any cute animals will amuse me well enough. Secondly, since I miss my cats and dog so much, and feel pretty bad for abandoning them, I regularly pop in to buy them treats and toys to take home with me. The range of beds is particularly good, which is handy when you have a dog as destructive as mine. This branch also has a Companion Care Vetinary Centre (02920 232 957).

I'm a sucker for pet shops, and I particularly love this chain of pet supermarkets. Although you…read morecan often pick up bits and bobs at little independent pet shops, when you need several things it's often easier to head straight to Pets at Home. My only complaint is that this branch (perhaps it's the same at all Pets at Home branches?) don't sell the dog food I buy (Harrington's), so I still have to pick that up elsewhere. For pick 'n' mix dog treats, squeaky toys, and accessories such as shampoo, bowls, leads and collars, however, Pets at Home has far more choice than most smaller pet shops. The staff all seem real animal-lovers, and if you take your dog in with you they often ask if they can give it a treat or two. Just be prepared for your dog to get into a right frenzy over all the food smells luring them from aisle to aisle - oh, and watch them if you go near the rabbit and guinea pig enclosures!

I wanted to find out whether there were any ways I could encourage them out from under the pond plants, and get them a bit tamer. She was very helpful and said she fed her goldfish at the same time each day to get them into a routine (!) and that they are now very confident. By way of saying thank you for her friendly advice, I bought a few treats for my dog - since I hadn't even bought my fish from her. The shop is long and thin, and not particularly big, but they cover most of the basics for cats, hamsters, dogs, rabbits, and most other popular pets - with loads of aquarium-related stuff in stock - and she has her own little dog sat with her behind the counter! Outside they also have some garden plants for sale on a small rack.

They sometimes even have a real puppy, or a dog, or a cat or a kitten. They always have fish in, large or small, or medium sized fish tanks. This shop even has rabbits; gerbils, guinea pigs, mice, and hamsters in cages or rather, some were more like boxes. The staff are friendly and their prices are reasonable enough. There is no real wheel chair access really, as there are many boxes or bits and pieces in a very squashed shop and even more so because of having such a little building to store it all in. The prices are alright and the place is full of many items such as; fish tanks to buy for your own fish, big and small, cat and dog toys, hamster cages, all ranges of different types of animal foods and treats, bowls, and leads, you'll be spoilt for choice here... I recommend it to all pet owners and children...

If you're into statistics - '10.5' x 10.5' x 3' (3.8 x 3.8 x 0.9m) and holds in excess of 2000 gallons/9500 litres' - apparently the biggest tank in any UK retail outlet! And lots and lots of little tanks too. Small boys and girls totally love this place. Adults are pretty keen too. Crying babies are soothed by the dark ambient lighting and the gentle waft and waggle of the passing fishies. There are some pretty gross things too, sort of wobbly intestinal sea-creatures. And some cuties like star fish and sea horses. It looks like a pretty innocuous warehouse from the outside, but even if you actually meant to go next door to buy daffodils you really have to see this. It's the biggest fishy thing going on in Wales with more fish than you could cast your net at.

Ranging from the most basic of fish tanks to perfectly intricate exotic aquariums, the centre caters for pet owners of all levels of experience. Although the price does differ significantly with the quality and size of the tanks, this is only to be expected with such specialist products. There is also a variety of ornaments on sale for those who like to personalise their tanks and aquariums, with items such as Spongebob Squarepants figurines for younger owners to meticulously detailed models like sunken ships and skulls for more mature enthusiasts. I often come here when I'm after any particular accessories for my cat, such as a nice new collar or perhaps some toys (though she is getting rather lazy). They sell many kinds of accessories for cats, dogs and smaller pets, and due to large size of the store you can really find yourself browsing for ages! They of course sell plenty of pet food in a variety of brands however I find that it is often slightly more expensive than the in the supermarket, so generally avoid purchasing cat food here. Though I should note that it is handy for pet food for more unusual animals that they don't commonly sell in the supermarket. It's not only pet food and toys that are available to purchase at Pets at Home, but the pets themselves. They tend to sell smaller animals (no cats and dogs) such as hamsters, guinea pigs, and small birds. I actually came here recently with my young cousin when she was purchasing a hamster and was quite impressed by the amount of knowledge the staff member serving us had. I also felt that she genuinely cared about the animals in the store which was very good to see. Finally, they do have a reptile section, however as I have a massive fear of snakes I have yet (and am unlikely) to ever enter this area; but if you like all things that slither, be sure to check it out!
