Reptile Cymru is a small exotic reptile store in Canton specialising in everything from corn snakes and geckos to bearded dragons and royal pythons. They also are one of the few UK breeders of African Pygmy Hedgehogs - I didn't see any when I was in the store, so you'll have to enquire, if you're interested. Oh, and Reptile Cymru also carry tarantulas, but I only glanced in their direction because the sight of spiders makes my stomach flip. This shop also stocks the entire reptile kit, as well as food like crickets, locusts, mealworms, even mice, rats and chicks (you haven't lived if you've never seen a python swallow a mouse - it's like having the Discovery Channel live in your mate's living room!). The shop assistant was very knowledgeable and willing to indulge me in a conversation about terrapins, my new pet of choice after my dreams of owning a ferret were destroyed by my landlord's strict pet regulations (boo).

My favourites are the guinea pigs and the Roborovski hamsters, and I can quite easily spend a good hour in there debating whether my landlord would notice if I bought one. I am eternally disappointed that there are no mice here, but any cute animals will amuse me well enough. Secondly, since I miss my cats and dog so much, and feel pretty bad for abandoning them, I regularly pop in to buy them treats and toys to take home with me. For pick 'n' mix dog treats, squeaky toys, and accessories such as shampoo, bowls, leads and collars, however, Pets at Home has far more choice than most smaller pet shops. The staff all seem real animal-lovers, and if you take your dog in with you they often ask if they can give it a treat or two. Just be prepared for your dog to get into a right frenzy over all the food smells luring them from aisle to aisle - oh, and watch them if you go near the rabbit and guinea pig enclosures!

Crying babies are soothed by the dark ambient lighting and the gentle waft and waggle of the passing fishies. There are some pretty gross things too, sort of wobbly intestinal sea-creatures. And some cuties like star fish and sea horses. It looks like a pretty innocuous warehouse from the outside, but even if you actually meant to go next door to buy daffodils you really have to see this. It's the biggest fishy thing going on in Wales with more fish than you could cast your net at.

They of course sell plenty of pet food in a variety of brands however I find that it is often slightly more expensive than the in the supermarket, so generally avoid purchasing cat food here. Though I should note that it is handy for pet food for more unusual animals that they don't commonly sell in the supermarket. It's not only pet food and toys that are available to purchase at Pets at Home, but the pets themselves. They tend to sell smaller animals (no cats and dogs) such as hamsters, guinea pigs, and small birds. I actually came here recently with my young cousin when she was purchasing a hamster and was quite impressed by the amount of knowledge the staff member serving us had. I also felt that she genuinely cared about the animals in the store which was very good to see.
