Way better than than previous pharmacies we've used. This store gets a bad rap because of all the homeless looting the store - emptying its shelves. It's a daily battle, they've tried security at the doors, but for whatever reason they don't have it anymore. They should permanently close off the door on Kettner and create a booze only counter with the liquor behind it, not accessible to the customer unless they are buying it at the booze counter.

While in San Diego this was the first place I went to gather supplies for my room. I did stop in…read morehere again at least once before departing, so this review will be a combination of the both visits. Coming here I expected more of a selection. It appeared that the wide variety of selection was set for libations rather than other items in the store. For the footprint of the store it seems that there just wasn't enough room in house to accommodate that. Like I said, because the libations took up a solid two aisles. That meant that the rest of the aisles were left to have items fight for counter space. Unfortunately on both of my visits here I did not find what I needed and had to venture elsewhere to get those items. Customer service wasn't too bad here, they were attentive to the needs of those in the store, but at some points they appeared to be bothered to help you at first. It is what it is. I view this more as a community convenience store than a Rite Aid. I suppose if you live in the neighborhood it is better than trekking to wherever to get a quick item.

There was also no effort made by front line staff to help me problem-solve. Only after I was turned away aggressively ("What is this? This isn't a prescription!! There is no doctor's signature, blah, blah, blah...") did I realize they could have just offered to try and transfer the prescription, because I did have a prescription number...which is what I was having done with a second prescription already, incidentally. For that second prescription, thank goodness somebody who seemed like the manager just happened to be standing there and listening. The counter person tried to tell me, oh this was filled by a different pharmacy, you have to go there. I as the customer, with no clue about their systems, had to proactively say, "Isn't it possible to transfer this prescription to here? Because that pharmacy didn't actually take my insurance." I am sure they are just very busy and trying to save as much time as they can with this gatekeeping by being unimaginative. But I can only imagine what barriers this creates for people. And also, it felt like they didn't even actually want my business, they were so busy.

What I mean by that is I ran out of allergy meds and knew that I was going to need them while in the area. I didn't want to wait until we made it to our final destination, I wanted to make sure I had it now. This location is set up so weird. I went to where I thought was going to hold my item. It wasn't, it was located at the end of an aisle. It was like they knew they weren't going to have enough space so they did exactly what they needed to do to make a full store fit in here. Finally found my item and went to find my friends before I went to pay and ended up finding a few snacks for the impending road trip we had ahead of us. Then we made our way to the register area. The register area was just as big of a mess as the rest of the store, but it somehow worked and flowed so much better than expected. Customers were in and out fairly quickly. Probably had something to do with a majority of them being self checkout, but whatever, the introvert in me liked that.

Location/Ambiance: *Convenient downtown location, about a 14-minute walk from Cortez Hill and close to the trolley and Ross. *Be aware of your surroundings as there are many suspicious eyes, transients, and homeless people. *Prices are a little friendlier than 7-Eleven and some other neighborhood markets. *Larger, well-stocked, and reasonably priced especially when using your CVS coupons! *The outside is worn and not particularly inviting, but the inside is bigger than expected, and what I call "organized chaos." *Most items are locked up especially the snacks I frequently buy. Felt like a treasure hunt looking for my usuals. *There was a good selection of snacks, drinks, and CVS essentials, though the grocery section is limited and some of the aisles felt cramped. Customer service: *Staff were friendly (one cashier and one I saw on the floor). They were quick to assist me. *Self-checkout was easy (3 machines); stress-free and in/out in 10 minutes. It's the best option if you're in a rush. Overall: *Nothing special, but it's convenient, generally well-stocked, and gets the job done. Not the prettiest CVS, but useful when you need something close by.

I came here several times in order to buy supplies, and prescriptions from the pharmacy. One challenge of this location is fairly large number of homeless nearby. I'm so glad that the pharmacist, Patrick, works there cuz he's really good at explaining things. I especially want to give a shout-out and appreciation to Kaylene!! Last week, she answered my questions and gave clear explanations to the many questions I had about how certain ones of my meds worked. Then, today, when my doc sent a new dosage of an antibiotic, Kaylene called me to check and see if I needed it to be dropped off. I told her I'm not sure yet about the results of the labwork and wanted to discuss with my doc first for clarification on what the test result showed. I asked her about my current Rx vs. other antibiotics I've been taking since October. I've tried about 5 different antibiotics, and there's still pain. So Kaylene said some are bactericidal and some are bacteriostatic. The difference is this, "Antibiotics can be divided into two groups on the basis of their effect on microbial cells through two main mechanisms, which are either bactericidal or bacteriostatic. Bactericidal antibiotics kill the bacteria and bacteriostatic antibiotics suppress the growth of bacteria (keep them in the stationary phase of growth)." I asked Kaylene to transfer me to her supervisor cuz she was so helpful and patient. I looked up what she needed to double check... apparently, Macrodantin is NOT a bacteriostatic , it's actually bactericidal . So I'm glad she looked it up and corrected herself. She was great! She really took the time and care to explain all of that and more. 6 out of 5 for her specifically, but I guess she'll have to settle for 5 stars.
