We have a longstanding tradition of ordering Wellington's on New Year's Eve. Well- even traditions must come to end because we will never be ordering from there again. Rumor has it the restaurant has changed ownership in the last year- and if that's true- can the old owners buy it back? There has been such a decline in food quality and service! Let's begin with all the ways the food was subpar. First- my mother did the fixed price menu. They forgot one of her courses entirely. The shrimp cocktail was not in the building. Not that it's a huge loss- you get four measley shrimp. Then, the lamb chops were supposed to come with arugula- and the "salad" was a weird container of lettuce and cannellini beans- beans were never mentioned anywhere on this menu. We honestly didn't even know whose meal that was supposed to pair with because nothing like it was on the entire menu. Food allergy risk anybody? The lamb chops were also bone dry- no trace of the reduction or glacier sauce that the menu specified. The worst offense of all were the salad dressings. They were completely inedible! The balsamic vinaigrette was just pure vinegar- like get out your Easter eggs to dye because that's really all you can do with straight vinegar. The raspberry vinaigrette had the consistency of a jam and lo and behold, tasted like a container of raspberry jam. Another was pure olive oil and the honey mustard was oily and way too honey- I think they forgot the mustard part. On top of the food being a total train wreck- the worst part was the service. From start to finish the staff was rude and made it seem like they were doing us a favor by serving us- that's your literal job! Both when we placed the order, picked up the food AND when my mom drove back to get her missing course they acted like we were such an inconvenience and annoyance. For the prices they charge- all of this was unacceptable. Pack orders correctly. Make edible food. Treat your customers with the slightest bit of hospitality. It's not hard to figure out. It's worth noting that when we returned for our missing course another customer was there demanding money back for spoiled food they were given on new years as well. Patrons of Shelton- raise your standards! We don't have a ton of higher end dining options and thus the ones we do have need to exceed expectations. Unfortunately, or maybe it's actually fortunately for us, we won't be back. read more

Definitely need a reservation on a Saturday. Place was packed. Our server was excellent. The food was very good. So why only a 3? The drinks I ordered a dry gin martini, what I got was a very vermouthy martini. My wife ordered a French martini that was so watered down it was barely drinkable. Our New Year's Eve take out was a disaster. Start to finish the staff was rude and seemed to be inconvenienced by our large order. We were missing a course to our meal. The salad dressings were like motor oil. I have previously gotten the balsamic vinaigrette specifically and it was always amazing .... I was so excited for it when we ordered our New Year's Eve dinners ....and I don't know what happened but this cup of dressing was inedible. I was devastated. They were unable to bring out their excellent warm sesame bread, so instead they served sliced hamburger rolls!! I kid you not! How could they?? Eventually bread came out, after our apps! Not at all cool. However, our server was extremely apologetic and explained the strain on the kitchen to serve a party of 20 while other diners were backed up. My message: When making a reservation call to see if a party is scheduled for that evening. Our server Jamie was delightful and the new owner Steve made a point of coming over and introducing himself to us. We felt like we were a regular and it was our first time. Wellington is decent. It's not going to blow you away but probably won't disappoint you either. We went there on a recent Friday evening with a party of 7 for an event and it was pretty crowded. Service was pretty good and the waiter was pleasant and efficient. Food and drinks were decent. I recommend the eggplant tower as an app. I had the chicken bruschetta and enjoyed it. Portions overall are definitely generous. It's not inexpensive but won't break the bank. The menu is pretty big and pretty basic. You'll find something for everyone, even picky eaters. With all the June bdays between family & friends in the month of June it was only a matter of time before we got around to 1 particular groups fav - Wellingtons. I had never been; heard from many that meals were very good so I was certainly looking forward to it but our 1st challenge was finding the place. Huntington center is a small oasis with some of its commercial real estate sequestered on one side with a shared parking lot with 3 different entrances. Before I navigated into the lot we searched for the restaurant's street signage but didn't notice any. We eventually found the restaurant ( still no signage ) at the far end, off by itself with an outside patio area fronting the door to the restaurant itself. Our Saturday late afternoon table reservation for 445 pm was for an early dinner but we weren't the only group present as the smallish 1st dining room had diners seated & the bar side in an adjacent room was buzzing with laughter & chatter. 1st impressions: Wellingtons interior & redolence has seen better days. A lover can overlook a lot of things but for me our 1st date was starting out a little rocky. Our server was energetic & bouncy. We ordered Caesar Salads & Shrimp Cocktails & enjoyed these starters very much. While waiting for our entrees, the 2nd dining room filled up pretty quickly & wait staff grew proportionately to the volume of customers ( a good thing ) as did the noise level. When our Entrees arrived we were immediately impressed with the generous serving & attractive presentation. Our Sole Milanese & Linguine & Shrimp pasta were outstanding. When it was time to pay the tab our server brought us one tab when 2 would have been more appropriate. One individual at our table had ordered take out to go for a home bound family member. The server essentially tabulated the take out bill on one side of the check & the other side of the check consisted of some strangely coded itemization of our in-house consumed meals that was impossible to decipher. We didn't need separate checks because 1 couple picked up the tab for the rest of the table for the entire in-house meal - but Wellingtons lost points because of sloppy check presentation & insufficient detail. We also had to ask for our customer copy of the receipt. Wellingtons has been serving a local community fine food for many years. That it hasn't reinvested into a few upgrades is probably a business decision based on customer sustained loyalty over the years & the old adage: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. read more

My best friend and I went to Wellington's on a Friday night. We had early reservations so when we arrived there were not too many people in the restaurant. As we began eating, more people arrived and it did get pretty busy, so I would recommend making a reservation. The place is also quite small so even on an off-night I would recommend making a reservation. To start, we both ordered French Onion Soup. I am a sucker for a good french onion soup and Wellington's did not disappoint. It was full of flavor, just enough cheese and the onions hit the spot. I truly think I could eat Wellington's french onion soup every day. For entrees, we both ordered Penne all vodka, i got chicken in mine which was a whopping $8 up charge. I thought that was crazy for a few pieces of chicken, but it turned out to be worth it because the pasta was delicious. Overall, we really enjoyed Wellington's. We have never been disappointed in going to Wellingtons. Our server Christine was outstanding, attentive and timing was on point. Kudos to her and the front house support working our room. Wellingtons has two main dining rooms and as the dinner service went on it became very busy and the restaurant did not miss a beat with us. App/Salad in our case and Entrees were wonderful. Large servings as i had the Linguini Pasta and my wife had the Roasted Half Duck. She enjoyed her meal and i used the extra bread brought to the table to completely finish my Pasta's sauce after i finished the dish. It was our first time at this place. Been living in Shelton for two years now and I've heard the hype in great reviews of this place and want to give it a try. Being from New Orleans, My food expectations are always high. The portions were great and the food was excellent. I had the clams Gorgonzola as an appetizer and the Gorgonzola pork chop for an entrée. It was very tasty and I ended up bringing half of my entrée home. Came here for dinner after my college graduation. The food was perfect and everything we wanted for my celebration. The service was a little tough when starting out; we felt a little forgotten as we were the only ones in a back room and it took a while for our order to get taken. Went there for dinner last night. It was very busy (6:30 on a Saturday evening) but the service was very good and the food was excellent. I had the Gorgonzola Filets and my wife had the Gorgonzola Chicken. Both were excellent. For appetizers we had the Calamari and also the stuffed clams. Really good food and everything was timed to the table perfectly. We never felt rushed and it felt like we had just gotten there when we realized that the dining experience was 2 hours. Very rarely do I say it was perfect but Wellingtons was as close to perfect as I have had in a long time. We will definitely be going back there again soon. One last thing, I thought the price was reasonable for what we had and I eat at a lot of nice restaurants. read more

Awful experience two weeks ago in the bar area. As we entered the bar for drinks and dinner we were unprofessionally greeted by the bartender informing us that five of the seats were reserved. So we moved around the corner where some very nice customers were more than happy to make room for our three seats. This portion of the bar was not reserved when two of us sat down and ordered drinks. As our third friend arrived minutes later we were told rest of the seats were reserved too and we could only occupy two seats. My Daughter and Son-in-law just moved to CT. We weren't sure about Wellingtons, the entrance wasn't well defined, but there were a lot of cars outside. We decided to give it a try.... We had an exceptional dinner!! We had fried calamari for an appetizer then I had the pork chop and shared with my Daughter (you'll see why) and the Son-in-law had Roasted duck. I decided to try this restaurant for an anniversary dinner after hearing positive feedback from friends and a strong rating on Yelp. I'm not sure if I got them on an off night, but this is easily the WORST $100+ dinner for two I've had. For starters, we made a reservation earlier this week. We got seated at a table right in between an entryway, where waitstaff is constantly passing by very narrowly. Upon going to use the rest room, there was water all over the floor. The wait staff was notified, as it was starting to flood, and they had to close down one of the two bathroom areas. We opted for two of the fish specials listed for the night, the sole and cod. It took 55 minutes for the food to arrive. The only logical explanation for the terrible experience I am about to summarize is MAYBE they forgot about our order, and it was rushed out without properly being seasoned or paid attention to. The vegetables were almost still completely crisp and completely flavorless, remniscent of frozen microwaveable vegetables, completely unseasoned and flavorless. My cod dish had crab mixed in, and the lack of seasoning made it impossible to tell if I was eating cod fish or crab unless I was looking at the texture and coloring. The rice was completely bland. To top it off, there are no pepper or salt shakers on any tables, so I couldn't even salvage the non-existant seasoning. The only redeeming quality, and the reason it is not a one star review was the pleasant wait staff. With that said, it will be my last time going here. Frank Bruni's NYTimes article, "The Best Restaurant if You're Over 50" could have used Wellingtons as an example of what to look for in a restaurant you're an aging silverback. No longer are new sensations important for us, we're looking for quiet, familiar comfort in a setting where the waitstaff doesn't treat us as invisible. The chairs should be comfortable and the noise level demonstrating library-like quietude with musical familiarity. The bar should be full of people somewhere in the decades paralleling ours. Wellington's menu hasn't changed since time immemorial, but as the waitress relayed their list of daily off-menu items my jaw dropped in awe at her committment. She sure knew her stuff - that must have taken most of an hour to memorize. We weren't offered a cocktail menu, but then, at our age we should have figured out what we like (according to Bruni, which I agree with). A wine menu would have been nice, though. There were many folks in their 50's in the bar. The soft musical background notes were known. Their house wine (a large pour) was Frontera, an inexpensive, non-assertive choice mentioned in Food & Wine as 'much beloved'. The menu listed a fried calamari with fra diavolo and garlic aioli, but ours was served with a creative Oriental sauce. My fresh, flaky and unbroken cod Francais was nicely sauced and served with fresh vegetables and seasoned rice. I usually don't touch the bread, but theirs was warm with a crust covered in sesame seeds. The waitress told us that Chaves bakes it especially for Wellingtons; I made such a production over it they gave us a second basket. There was a stream of people passing our table going to a corporate function. If I have to go someplace work-related after work I feel slightly aggrieved; but here every passer-by looked happy - several of whom the staff knew and heartly greeted. I can not recommend Wellington's highly enough! I recently had to arrange a post-funeral lunch. My Dad passed away in San Diego where I live, but his ashes needed to be brought 'home', back to Connecticut, to be placed in a cemetery next to my Mom and sister. It was already a stressful time in my life, and having to try to arrange a funeral service, coordinate with the cemetery and then having to arrange a post-funeral lunch from over 3000 miles away was not easy. I needed to find a restaurant that was open for lunch, was not too far from the cemetery, preferably had a private room, and had great food. I always look to Yelp, especially when I am looking for something out of my immediate San Diego area, and read every review before making my decision. Wellington's checked all the boxes I needed, and had nothing but glowing reviews. The pictures of the food posted on Yelp were drool-worthy! So I called the restaurant and spoke to Chris. I explained what I needed, and also the fact that I pretty much had no idea how many people would actually be at the lunch. I honestly did not know whether there would be 10 people there, or 25. I also discussed with the Chris the need for a private room if possible (not a problem!), and if I would need to limit our group to just one or two entree choices, since there is always inevitably a vegan or vegetarian in the group, as well as steak-and-potatoes people. Chris was unbelievably easy to work with, he let me know they had a private room with space for 20 and additional room to mingle or set up a little table for flowers and a picture collage I had made, that we would be able to order off the regular menu, and that I could let him know an expected head count closer to the date. I wanted to have several appetizers available on the table as soon as we arrived, since everyone is usually starving and I did not want to try to rush the lunch since there would be relatives there that I had not seen for years and who had driven 3-4 hours one way to attend the service. Chris let me know the appetizers I chose, as well as warm bread would be available upon our arrival. The lunch ended up being absolutely perfect in every way. As we arrived, warm bread, butter, the appetizers I ordered and water was immediately placed on the tables, and then Chris and Shari took everyones drink orders and gave us menus. There ended up being 17 people for lunch that day. ALL 17 entrees came out of the kitchen at the same time, piping hot, fresh, and beautifully plated. There was not one incorrect order, nor anyone out of the 17 people that did not LOVE their food. We ordered a large variety of food, from cold entree salads to steaks to chicken milanese to seafood. Each one was cooked perfectly, with beautiful accompaniments. Chris and Shari checked in on us regularly, to see if we need drink refills or anything else. The private room gave our group a nice space to reminiscence about my Dad, and Chris let us know we could have the room as long as we needed, they would not be rushing us out after an hour as some places do. I am a perfectionist (unfortunately!) and am frequently disappointed by the quality of food or service in restaurants, especially in the So Cal area where I live. Wellingtons exceeded my expectations in every way. The food was some of the best food I have ever had, and that is not an exaggeration, and the service was extremely professional. The restaurant itself is charming, very comfortable and inviting. We had a beautiful, relaxing lunch and I will be eternally grateful for the perfect experience Wellingtons provided. On our way out, I told Chris I was amazed that all 17 entrees were delivered at the same time, and every one was top notch. I was thinking there must be 4 or 5 chefs working to make that happen, and he told me there was just ONE cook. One extremely experienced, high caliber professional, obviously! If I am ever in the Shelton area again, Wellingtons will be my first stop. Thank you Chris, Shari, and the amazing chef for providing the perfect post-funeral lunch.
