How could I leave the great state of NY without a trip to Wegmans? Meant to be a "quick" trip to pick up a few things, the cart easily filled up with lots of goodies. Simply walking through the bakery section will make your mouth water. Everything is so delicious...especially their cakes and black and white cookies! Growing up in Binghamton I was SPOILED thinking all grocery stores were like this. Wegmans is honestly New Yorks best kept secret. Oh, so what makes this grocery store so fancy you ask? Wegmans has a hot food bar, pizza counter, a sub-shop, coffee bar, fresh prepared foods, HUGE deli, amazing bakery filled with bulk assorted cookies, cakes, pies & donuts, a bulk-candy section with every candy you could want, international foods, pet food, paper products, the list goes on... Not to mention free-child care. Yes, an area for your kids to play while you SHOP. Oh, so you want to get a little Boozy tonight? WEGMANS HAS YOU COVERED. New York State liquor laws prohibit the sale of hard alcohol inside grocery stores..so what did they do? Built their own goddamn liquor warehouse right next to the store. I currently live in NYC and when I heard they were building a Wegmans in Brooklyn the first thing I did was look up apartments in Brooklyn. read more

Freshest produce you'll be able to find in the area. I prefer coming to Wegmans over Walmart for my veggies, fruits, and meats, even if I have to pay a little more for better quality. This place is enormous and they have everything you'll ever need and expect from a grocery store. It even has its own take-out buffet AND sub station, 14" subs for less than $10, why would you ever consider going anywhere else for a sub? There's a nice spacious seating area for those anyone who wants to sit down and eat their delicious food before going home and having others asking for "a bite". I have been holding back writing reviews for a few weeks now because I wanted my 100th yelp review to be special, and I just didn't feel I had been to a really special place in awhile. Then I thought back to my days in western NY and the southern tier. The first thing that always comes to mind is Wegmans. I have been to many Wegmans locations between Buffalo and Binghamton, but this location holds a special place in my heart. As a grocery store you just can't beat Wegmans. It is beautiful inside. You would think you were in a Whole Foods.. but the prices are much more reasonable. Everything is kept clean and organized and in terms of variety you can find almost anything you are looking for, including many specialty items. I especially love Wegmans brand items. Many store brands just cover the basics, but the Wegmans brand expands itself to compete with fancier brands (Wegmans gluten free waffles anyone? I tried to be gluten free for a few days...didn't work out...but it was nice to have a more reasonably priced option). My absolute favorite thing about Wegmans is the bulk candy. They have hundreds of bins of every imaginable candy item, so you can pick out exactly what you want. Ten gummy bears? No problem. Five chocolate covered pretzels? Perfect. When it comes to candy I'm really a little kid, and being able to have a little taste of every candy I want without having a whole bag leftover is a dream come true. Now on to prepared foods. Wegmans subs were a staple for me in college. They're HUGE. Easily two means, but honestly, if you're eating a reasonable serving they can really be four. The bread is always fresh and the deli meat (Wegmans brand of course) is always perfectly sliced. They also offer a few hot foods. I have tried the chinese (I know grocery store chinese sounds completely unappetizing, but Wegmans does it well) as well as the pizza. This location also used to have a pasta bar where you could chose a pasta, sauce, and veggies and they would prepare it for you...sadly this was replaced with a larger pizza area with a brick oven. They also have a small dining area perfect for a work lunch break. Living in Florida now, I really miss Wegmans. I was in a friend's wedding in Syracuse awhile back and as soon as she got me from the airport I asked to go to Wegmans. Danny Wegman, if you are reading this, consider an expansion to south Florida...I'd betray Publix in a heartbeat. read more

All of the other Wegmans I have been to leave their coffee out until closing hours. This one puts theres away at 8 pm! I couldn't believe it! The cafe doesn't close until ten but the coffee bar closing two hours before that just isn't right in my opinion. Came here this past Saturday at 9:45 with the hopes of getting something from the salad bar since I knew they didn't close until 10 but by the time I walked in the doors everything was cleaned up. Like one of the reviewers below me, I saved Wegmans in Johnson City for my 100th review because it's one of my absolute favorite places on earth. This may seem slightly pathetic to some, but if so then clearly you have never had the pleasure of shopping at this wondrous place for years and then moved somewhere that doesn't have a Wegmans for hundreds of miles around. The Johnson City store is located across from Oakdale Mall (just take the exit before the airport off 86!) It's one of the bigger stores in the area (compared to Corning and Elmira) which means more selection! Their bakery has started carrying more gluten free items, some actually made by Wegmans (cookies and cupcakes), and different breads. There is a huge selection of other items that aren't gluten free as well of course. The Nature's Market has had huge growth since the store opened and carries more gluten free items than I've ever seen in a grocery store outside of Whole Foods. Wegmans is known in general for carrying a wide variety of items in all areas of the store. They have gift items and cards, a very nice floral department, bulk candy (and other items) which is still one of my favorite things about the store. It makes you feel like a kid again! The cafe here is great as well, with a much larger hot and salad bar than I have seen in most stores. There is an area to get coffee drinks, fresh made subs, pizza, sushi. There is a fairly new outdoor patio area that is nice when it's warm outside. This store does get very busy it can be hard to find a spot. There is a new wine and liquor store right next door where you can also use your Wegmans Shoppers Club card (one of the Wegmans daughters opened it). Wegmans is simply a magical place that I can never quite describe properly in words the experience. Every other grocery store, and I use that word loosely because it's so much more, pales in comparison. read more

Shout it loud, and shout it proud: WEGMANS!! This upstate staple is the best supermarket I've ever shopped in - period. I believe that it leaves the lovely Whole Foods in the dust. Granted, Wegman's prices are higher than most supermarkets in the area, but they have an absolutely terrific selection of goods. The produce was always fresh; the cheese section was to die for; and they had a great aisle of international foods/spices/stocks, etc. Add to the mix the more traditional supermarket offerings, along with a great fish and meat counter, a very nice pharmacy, and a staff that was quite warm and friendly, and it's no wonder that people shopped at this place with abandon. You could even have lunch here. They had a bar of Chinese and Italian food that was actually pretty decent, and a section of tables to sit at once you'd finished loading up your take-out container with General Tsao's chicken or linguine. And there was no shame in telling people that you'd had your lunch at Wegman's, either - saying that you went out to lunch there was met with looks of understanding; sometimes, I dare say, jealousy, especially if you were a penniless, car-less SUNY student subsisting on dining hall food. Personally, I loved Wegman's. Yes, their prices were always somewhat steep, but I enjoyed the atmosphere of the store, the friendliness of the employees, and above all, the vast quality of the selection. The pride that the company evidently took in its business didn't hurt either, and clearly showed in the store's well-kept aisles and easy-to-navigate layout. And those computerized devices - they were either on the carts or scattered throughout the store, I forget now - that could tell you where any product in the store was located? Genius! Absolute genius. ShopRite, PriceChopper and other downstate venues need to get with the program, because I really hate wandering the aisles when I go shopping. Every once in a while I'll actually log onto the Wegman's website just to see if they've opened any stores downstate yet. It's always a vain effort. My nearest Wegman's is located in northern New Jersey. For those outside New York State, Wegman's can also be found in Pennsylvania and Virginia, and there's also a lone outpost in Maryland. I look forward to the day when Wegman's makes its way to my part of the state. There are many people who would greet them warmly, I'm sure. read more

The veggies are fresh, the bread section (MY section) is extensive, and they have tons and tons of organic options - kind of rare for the Southern Tier! WEGGYS! If you don't love wegmans you are not human. the greatest supermarket in history? possibly. They have great quality foods. comparable to whole foods, but not as strict with the organic types. I dont even think they mention organic there. But thats the type of standards they have. Plus they have great ready foods : subs, pizza, wings, chinese, soups, sushi, and others. Most times I went there just for dinner. My favs were the buffalo pizza, hot wings, and danny's sub with the sub sauce. might as well. Service was horrible. I was in the cafe 9:55am today. I took a little longer to pull out my phone to pay, the lady at the counter was feeling annoyed and speaking with an attitude. later I went back to pay for a refill with a different person at the cashier, as I was getting my second cup, I was scream by the same lady that I have to pay $.69 cents to get the refill as seems I cannot read the sign. My child came to Binghamton University on 2000 and settled here ever since. Wegmans used to be my favorite spot when I travel to see her family, never been treated like this before. I love Wegman's. For staples, I go to the Giant, but for cheese, imitation meat products, produce and tofu, it's Wegman's for me. One of my favorite things is the eat-in area. It's kind of nice to shop, have lunch, get rung up, and then leave. I'm the type who gets stressed out by grocery shopping, giving myself a little break between the gathering grocery and the ringing part is a very, very good thing for me. When it comes to grocery stores Wegman's is the BEST. Growing up in Upstate NY and experiencing Wegman's has ruined me for every other grocery store. No other grocery store even comes close in comparison. Every time I come home, Wegman's trips are a must - sometimes to eat there and other times to stock up on things I can't get anywhere else! The store has a great layout and always looks clean and organized. There are always a ton of people working the floor to help you with any questions, restocking items that are running low, and lots of cashiers on registers to get you out of the store in a timely fashion. The prepared food has so many great options. They have pizza, sushi, a Chinese bar, a salad bar, burrito bar, subs, and sometimes a fish fry bar. The sushi is some of the best packaged sushi I have ever had. It is made fresh every day and you can even ask the sushi chefs to make you something if you don't see it in the case. The subs are huge and so good! They have an amazing bulk candy section. They have the best selection of gummy candies. Way more than just your standard worms and bears. Lots of chocolate candies too, such as caramel turtles or chocolate covered pretzels. Now that I don't live in the area anymore one of the things I miss the most is Wegman's! Hoping and praying that they continue to expand and keep making their way deeper into the South!! read more

I visited this particular store on the last day of my trip in the area. I was visiting the Oakdale Mall across the street when I noticed this store and felt that I needed to visit it. Upon entering, I was not disappointed. Parking was easy but somehow the store seemed crowded with people. Visiting their prepared food section, I joined the crowd. Eventually I chose to get something from their Asian Wokery and found their selection to be well made. Checking out was easy as there were enough cashiers to handle the crowd. I think they might be the largest Wegman's I've ever visited. read more

A year ago I would have given them 5 stars. They have increased their organic produce and meats (which are pricey) and have decreased the amount of non-organic items. The service meat department does not offer as much as before and does not custom cut anything. Why they expanded the cheese and fish departments is confusing to me as most people in the area would not need all the varieties offered.They should try to keep their products affordable and not push the consumer towards increasingly organic and expensive items. In addition to the food items we have had trouble with the pharmacy being able to fill prescriptions because they did not have enough pills available. read more

Wegman- oh how I love you. Let me count the ways. - Their hot food section that had their signature subs and vats of edible soup. Their soup was a great way to warm yourself when Binghamton was coated with five inches of snow. My favorite way to feed myself after a long day was Danny's favorite sub. We always ordered it with Genoa salami, capicola, spicy ham, and provolone toasted on white bread with their sub dressing. You could feed two people for less than eight dollars. Yum. - the large candy selection- which included lollipops the size of my head and wide variety of jelly bellys. They have an aisle for seasonal candy- like multi colored peeps and large chocolate bunnies for easter. Do they have gummy worms and candied 'fruit slices'? Yes. Do they have grapefruit candy and yogurt covered almonds/raisins/pretzels? You bet. - a seasonal aisle that had mini faux fir trees and red and green martini glasses. The seasonal aisle would flow into the kitchen utensil aisle. I used to wander down this lane and look at the different assortments of christmas decorations and then examine different types of grates and mashers. Coming to Wegmans was a nicer way to shop. You left feeling a sense of wonder and awe. It was so much cleaner than Giant and your conscience felt lighter than when you left Walmart. I love the fresh salads and assortment of fruits veggies and fresh herbs The meats are fresh and found some rare cuts of meat. I like that they have fresh sandwiches that are made to order. I found the prices to be average to above. Then you have so many great sale items it balances it out. The only issue I had is that I did not see a fresh fruit juice bar. Wegmans is a store that I don't go to if I can help it. Not because it is a bad store but because I know it is very crowded. I usually make all my desserts from scratch. Last Sunday though I was out and needed a birthday cake for my son's 40th birthday and needed a chocolate cheesecake. My father in-law said Wegmans would have it. They did and it was so delicious and worth every penny it cost! Excellent! Excellent! The store was very crowded as it was a Sunday afternoon. We got a parking spot right near the front and that was helpful as I have a hard time walking far. The clerk was so pleasant and friendly, even on a busy day. One thing I really liked was at the check out I remembered I needed coffee creamer. So I went to get it and instead of having to walk all the way to the back of the store, right behind the check out area, is a smaller cooler with the things you might need, but don't want to walk a mile away to get it. Normally, I would have just skipped it. I'll go back there again for special items that other stores may not carry. read more

I recently moved away from the Binghamton area, and one of the biggest causes of anxiety for me was the simple question: where will I do my grocery shopping? I was dismayed to learn that there is no Wegmans within driving distance of Hartford, CT. After living in western NY for over a decade, I must say that when it comes to grocery stores, my heart belongs to Wegmans. Wegmans simply never let me down. Their selection far outstrips any of their competitors; particularly when it comes to ethnic foods and produce. They are always clean; their bakery is fantastic; their employees are generally knowledgeable and courteous. The only problem with Wegmans is that their aren't enough of them. Particularly, in Binghamton, the massive lot gets close to full on busy days. Their prepared foods go well beyond the typical grocery store; particularly the subs and the burrito bar. Their sushi has always been fresh and tasty, but not quite the same as going to a restaurant. I cannot recommend their chinese food bar --- the food is no better than a typical no-name chinese take-out place. In fact, it's worse because it sits in the bar waiting for you. It's just not on the same level of quality as the rest of their prepared foods. They also have indian food prepared, which in my experience was tasty, even if their weren't to many options. They have a little dining room if you want to eat there. Wegmans store brand products are generally a cut above typical store brand products. My prime example is cherry wedge soda. Wegmans wedge is a version of fresca (grapefruit soda); and while fresca does have a (sometimes difficult to find) black cherry variety, Wegmans' cherry wedge is better. In fact, it's my favorite soda. In almost every case I can think of, I happily take the store brand product. I do recall long ago trying the store brand cookies and cream ice cream, and thinking it was perhaps not up to snuff. I think you'll find that the biggest complaint against Wegmans is that prices are higher than other stores, but if you're purchasing store brand goods, I don't think this is the case at all. And in fact, I don't feel like you'll save tremendously elsewhere, aside from shopping at Aldi. Until I found the Stew Leonard's in Hartford, I wasn't sure I'd have a shopping experience on the same level during my stay here. I'm hoping that withing a few years, I'll feel as fond of Stew Leonard's as I am of Wegmans. read more

Wegmans makes it easy to make real food choices. As for packaged organics and "health foods", they also carry a great variety of convenience foods. Wegman's is a great store but way too crowded. The food selection is far superior than the local Giant and Weis Markets but it is a bit more costly as well. When you need a specialty item or are looking for a type of beer that is local to the area, there is not better place to go and for that reason, I love the store. Overall, I would say go to your neighborhood store for the normal, everyday items and go to Webmans when you need something special. read more
