Everyone is also super friendly and willing to help, instructors as well as the other members. It's also really cool to see a gym where the members have belonged for a long time (years), which you don't see that much these days at other gyms and studios. Love the music and the vibes. As soon as you arrive, you can feel the great energy in the room, however, you can smell it too. I was a bit taken back with the space. This is why I am giving 4 stars. Considering how expensive memberships and classes are, you would think their cleanliness would be exceptional...especially with it being a sweaty gym. Equipment is well loved which isn't a problem but everything else seems to be too (yoga mats, walls, floors all need a little tlc). As a previous business owner, I understand there are overhead costs, however... when charging someone close to $200/mo, you would expect a visually pleasing experience. Or at least a clean and smelly free space. Hehe. Lovely otherwise!

This place falls into the latter category. It's an old, refurbished firehouse, run by a cool guy, who gives off old fireman energy (that's a compliment btw. I know a couple people who refer to fireman as "fire cops" and I strongly disagree with that branding). It's my understanding that this is unlimited access once you sign up, but I only do drop in for day use when I'm in town and I really appreciate how easy it is to do. Interior design is relaxed with sports and music related art work. They have all the equipment that the vast majority of people will need. There's occasional mask wearers so if that's something you want to wear, there's no dumb jocks staring at you uncomfortably. Generally fine music although, tragically; like most places in San Diego, it plays too much 311-sublime-Jack Johnson-white guy rock. This is a small knock, as most people are wearing headphones or ear buds and the place is otherwise rad. The fact that there's not more reviews on it, lead me to believe that people are trying to keep it from getting too crowded.

Beyond that, I have been benefitting a ton from the initial consultation and pt with Ghyslain! He's awesome to work with, like genuinely knowledgeable, very experienced, professional and fun to be around. The way he honed in on exercises that I needed and the little tweaks he makes to form while I'm lifting is incredibly helpful. I feel like I've been learning a lot from him and plan to continue the pt at least until the end of the month! I've made it to a couple of classes so far and have really loved them too (including Natalie's hot yoga!!). I think once I get more comfortable and a bit stronger from the workouts I'm learning in pt then I'll start making it to more of the classes and more frequently. As someone who mostly does workout classes that don't involve wearing shoes, walking into Renegade…read morefor the first time was a little intimidating. But with the warm welcome from Coach Matty, I felt empowered to give it a try. The website does not do a great job of explaining the format, so here's what I experienced. The workout is split into three parts. Two strength based areas and one cardio tread. In the strength area, we engaged in things like deadlifts, curls, pull ups, etc. On the tread, we did a variety of intervaled runs with the section half being an option to either Tabata run or use the kettle bell to go between strength and floor core exercises. The coach cues each section and prompts you when to do what. Time flew by as you're constantly moving quickly from one exercise to another. I had a lot of fun and it was a really solid exercise. I left feeling stronger and sweatier! They offer first 3 classes free so you can give it a try!

I first came across Renegade on ClassPass and was so impressed with the experience that I decided…read moreto become a member. This gym offers a wide variety of bootcamp like classes with fantastic energy and some truly talented coaches. While there are a few who are overly egotistical and could use a come back to earth reality check and a touch more humility, the majority of the coaching staff is excellent. Two standouts are Gabrielle Y. and Christian Q., who make working out an absolute pleasure. Gabrielle's welcoming demeanor and contagious positivity create a great atmosphere, and Christian's coaching style is equally motivating and supportive. The classes themselves are high-energy, challenging, and adaptable to different fitness levels. What I love most is that each coach brings their unique style and energy to the table. Once you find the coach who resonate with you, it's easy to stick with them and stay consistent. The variety keeps things interesting, and you'll never get bored while working toward your fitness goals. One of the challenges, however, is parking. Since Lazy Acres put up signs claiming what feels like half the lot, finding a spot can be a headache. I've learned not to arrive too early because spots typically free up only once the previous class ends. While it can be frustrating to circle the lot, a little patience and timing go a long way. It's something to keep in mind when planning your visits. The gym itself could benefit from more regular cleaning and maintenance. A deep cleaning is definitely overdue, as dust, hair, and even cobwebs can be seen in corners. Some benches are rusty and could use replacing. While these issues don't take away from the quality of the workouts, they do detract from the overall experience. Many other gyms in the area have weekly professional cleaning services, which could be a great addition here to help maintain a fresher, more polished environment. Despite these minor drawbacks, Renegade remains a fantastic place to work out. The membership is reasonably priced, although ClassPass is still more affordable and offers lower price penalties for late cancellations. Overall, the quality of the classes and the dedication of standout coaches like Gabrielle and Christian make this gym worth checking out. If you're looking for a challenging yet welcoming environment to achieve your fitness goals, Renegade is a solid choice--just plan ahead for parking and connect with the coaches whose energy aligns with yours!

CYCLE BAR @ HILLCREST…read more Parking here is honestly a massacre. It gets extremely busy, especially on weekends. The parking situation just isn't the greatest. There are so many popular spots around CycleBar like Trader Joe's, Oakberry, and other busy restaurants so finding a space can definitely be difficult. But if you keep circling around, you'll eventually find one. I've been to CycleBar a few times before back home in Washington, and I was really excited to try this location for the first time. Unfortunately, my name got mixed up with someone else's and my reservation wasn't showing up on their screen, even though I had it on my phone. But the staff was super nice and got everything sorted out so I could still join the class. They gave me cycling shoes, and I loved that they wrote a cute little note on my locker. The whole vibe of CycleBar is something I've always loved the dark room with the red and purple lighting just feels so energizing. Our instructor was super upbeat and motivating, and I really enjoyed the flow of the class. The only critique I have is that it wasn't as challenging as the classes I've taken before; it felt more like a beginner-level ride. But it was still a great experience overall. I loved the music selection and the energy of the people in the room. Overall, I'd definitely recommend trying CycleBar for your first ride and seeing if it's your vibe. I absolutely love cycling and would continue coming back.

I took myself on a little gym tour, trying to find a good replacement and though all the options were so much better than my former gym, North Park Fitness really stood out to me! The person working there when I came in for a little tour was very kind, I never felt pressured to join, he answered all my questions, and then has continued to recognize me ever since. It just felt very personable! He also took the time to make sure the gym would meet my needs and even offered to ask him any time if I ever needed help using a machine I was unfamiliar with. I love how clean everything is, and I notice how on top of it they are at fixing anything broken. In the year I've gone here, my favorite machine has had a rip in the seat twice and both times it was fixed within a few days of me noticing it. I appreciate that they fix things even when it doesn't affect the mechanics of the machine! They also have a huge variety of equipment, more options than when I was at my former gym that was much bigger. The only complaints I have, in my opinion, are not easy to change with a small, local gym in North Park. North Park Fitness can't change the parking options, that's a North Park problem. It is a bit pricey, but again, that's a North Park problem. I also researched and found a couple other small gyms near the area that were much more expensive, so I appreciate not having to pay hundreds of dollars each month at North Park Fitness!

The split between the upstairs and downstairs areas can be inconvenient depending on the workout but it's mostly fine. I've been dropping in here for almost a year, and the front desk staff has always been friendly and helpful with me. My interaction with the owner today, however, left me feeling really put off. First, he gave me a hard time about the drop-in rate and was telling me about some personal trainers trying to sneak clients (I wasn't sure if he was suggesting I was trying to do that but it made me feel uncomfortable). Later, he asked me to not drop my bb on the lifting platform while deadlifting because it's too loud (I've always done that, that's what the lifting platform is for...). I couldn't help but to feel like I was being patronized because I am a woman. I've trained at many gyms over the years. This was the first time I've felt treated with so little regard as a client. I've liked this gym before but I won't be coming back again.
