The gym is amazing and the people are great but if you want to cancel your membership make sure you READ your contract and understand it. The staff that are in there will help you out with anything that you don't understand just don't bs them when it comes time to put in work. The people in there as well can help you out with stuff you don't understand. If canceling just know ABC Fitness is a pain in the ass to deal with. The gym has helped me out with my cancellation so I have no problems with them but ABC Fitness can suck my fatty. Coach Jose, I appreciate the knowledge you taught me even if it was for a short while. To the owner: I bet you get a lot of hate because of this but just know I enjoyed the gym and the people I trained with. I would love to workout again at your facility if I ever get the change to come back out to SD but not while ABC Fitness is your financial advisors and holders. This gym has a lot going for it: the facility is well-equipped with showers, a full weight room, and a fight arena, and the MMA instructors are genuinely excellent with their skills. However, be aware of the billing and cancellation process The Arena uses a 3rd party collection agency called ABC Financial services / Fitness Solutions to handle memberships and billing. This company makes cancellation process extremely difficult with their predatory policy of trapping your credit card and destroying your credit score. Apparently, the owner uses their "financial services" to prevent fraud, and he's argumentative when people criticize ABC. He defends them aggressively and consistently, regardless of their predatory policies/practices. The arena present a plan of a month to month 12, or 24 month simple one-page contract with the 24 month being the lowest price and gets you a discount. Looks good on paper but the cancellation terms are very restrictive and according to their cancelation policy you need to have a (look at screen shot number 1) Reading 1-3 star reviews they explained their gym cancellation being denied despite meeting those conditions. From those who moved out of state and still couldn't get their membership canceled. One reviewer even had a serious medical condition: a life threatening softball size Tumor but ABC denied his request to cancel his gym membership.(look at screen shot 2) So even If you move out of state or move to a foreign country, lose an actual limb, become paralyzed from the neck down, have cancer, or die, they will refuse to cancel your gym membership regardless. Youre still paying the bill until your contract is finished or ABC calls in for a debt if you freeze your card. That kind of behavior is disturbingly similar of how health insurance companies operate. Technically, you can switch your contract to a month to month or pay a buyout that covers the contract and end it early. But I message a reviewer thru yelp who said that he paid the buyout and still had their account sent to ABC as a "delinquent". At that point, it becomes almost meaningless if you're being harassed by them anyway. Both ABC and the owner will fleece as much money from you as possible causing financial problems. So, be warned: Even if the monthly price looks low, being locked into a 12 or 24 month contract with ABC Financial services / Fitness Solutions can become a serious financial problem. And even if you sign up for a month to month payment you're going to have a difficult time canceling your gym membership. And when you do the buyout option get a lawyer to help you negotiate with collections. Read everything very carefully and assume that cancellation is difficult, even in legitimate hardship situations. To the owner: I deeply understand that you want to prevent people from committing fraud. However, this does not justify failing to clearly explain to consumers what they are signing. They have a right to be fully informed of the terms, conditions, and financial obligations before they sign any agreement. I guess I have to write a quality review so yelp can actually keep it. Me and my partner joined for Mauy Thai, he is the one who wanted us to try and I enjoyed how helpful everyone in the class was. The instructors are very professional, I enjoyed that they don't let you slack off and keep you on your toes. We are helped especially when I am lost most of the time. Even though it's difficult to find time to go it's so worth it. I have looked through the other reviews and haven't dealt with the financial company but read the contract. You have to send a written letter contact them and the gym. Nobody is intimidating, they are all super friendly and serious with their sport. If you're joining make sure you're there to learn or practice. It will only be a waste of time if you make it a waste of time, also don't waste their time either. read more

Misleading "30-Day Free" Offer and Unfair Contract Terms I signed up for a membership at The Arena (San Diego) on September 8 2025 after being told I'd get 30 days free and pay $139/month after that for two years. On October 8 2025 I was charged $278 (basically two months of fees) with no mention of any initiation or down-payment fee when I signed. When I brought it up, they claimed a manager had gone over the details--but it wasn't; it was a new employee. I never would have signed a two-year contract if I'd known the "free" month wasn't actually free. After several requests to switch me to month-to-month, they still wouldn't provide anything in writing or cancel the contract. Instead, they said I'd have to pay another $500 to "buy out" of the agreement--even though I'm only two months in and already paid $278. This completely contradicts what was said during signup. Calling something "30 days free" and then billing for the first month right after 30 days is not free--it's misleading. The gym itself isn't bad and most of the people are great, but ownership clearly doesn't value members. Even the pro team that used to train here left a while ago. They also removed the floor mats from the boxing room, which makes bag work rough on the joints, and there's no actual octagon. Coaches are solid, community is cool--but the business practices and lack of transparency from ownership make it hard to recommend. Very organized and very professional organization . Coaches are experts and the members are all serious . I'd say this is more of a gym to join if you already have some experience but a beginner with some dedication and humbleness can definitely make it . The gym is also surprisingly clean compared to other gyms I've seen . My main and probably only issue with this business is the company they decided to pair with to handle their payments . I joined pre covid and signed a 2 year agreement . Covid struct and they had to shut down due to state ordinance . I was billed for multiple moths while attempting to contact the gym . Eventually I gave up on contacting the gym and canceled the credit card I had enrolled my auto pay with , since paying a $100 a month for a gym you can't use doesn't seem fair . I since completely forgot about it until recently when I saw their finical company put me in collections . I've already disputed the collections with the credit bureau but if they don't remove the collections I'll have to take the gym to small claims to remove the amount they have tried to enforce . READ THE FINE PRINT in your contract. When canceling your membership, (apparently) you're suppose to go down to the gym and cancel the membership. I was told to go through the ABC financial and cancel it through there (Which is what I did) I just received a email from a law firm called "Aldous & Associates" saying I have a balance of $38.50 remaining with my account at the arena. Even though I already cancelled the account with ABC financial 5 YEARS AGO. I moved out of the city due to family emergencies and didn't know I had to come down to the gym to cancel. So if you don't cancel the membership at the gym in person, they will send this "law firm" to you to collect a debt. The fact that you have to go down there when you received misinformation from ABC financial and the gym is very frustrating. They most likely want you to go to the gym in person so they can try to convince you to stay. (Which is not a way to do business) You shouldn't have to jump through so many obstacle just to cancel! I have nothing against the trainers and respect them fully. I also went for only the boxing gym and coach Joe was an amazing coach and such a nice guy. I enjoyed the all-women's jiu jitsu grappling class. The instructor, Rose, was knowledgeable and patient. I appreciate that she broke down the techniques into individual moves, which made it easier to follow. Hi everybody! I'd like to leave this review as a continuation of the conversation that's happening in the Google Maps reviews. Long story short - had complain about one of coaches who was screaming at me for like 10 minutes because I entered the wrong door (please see my mail to gym owners in attachments). More info you can find on Google, but I'll take a photos and attach it here just in case that review disappears (I've mentioned this can happen sometimes). Now gym owner finally replied to me and what he's saying is I don't even know whether it's funny or sad, but I'm definitely very sorry for him, because he's missing to understand the most important thing in life - how respect works. But that's ok, eventually he'll learn it. From my side I'd like to say that if you're not looking for "everyday porrada" gym "for the real warriors" and just want to work on your skills in friendly and safe atmosphere - don't go here. Feel free to reach out to me directly and I'll be more than happy to share my experience with you, because I've trained in a lot of gyms worldwide, I know what I'm looking for and it's definitely not what this place can offer. I have 0 complaints about the trainers and staff at this gym. Every interaction was always respectful and helpful. However, when I tried to cancel my membership after I had completed my 2 year contract I initially signed, I found it nearly impossible. I am in the navy and wanted to cancel because I was going on deployment and will be moving out of state shortly thereafter. First I called the gym and was told to call the company they use for memberships. Seemed easy enough so I called the number I was given. They explained that they could not cancel over the phone and that I needed to email them. After emailing I was then told it had to be written and was given a P.O. Box. At this point I was already frustrated with this ridiculous process to cancel a gym membership, especially one that I was no longer under contract with. However, I wrote the written cancellation request and mailed it to the given address and couple days before I went on deployment. Shockingly, I then received a email stating that they had received the request but that request was also not good enough for them to cancel the membership. I then advised my bank and they froze the charges coming from ABC Fitness. Upon return from deployment, I was informed by an attorney that they had continued to charge me and now my "debt" was sent to collections. It amazes me that they treat their customers this way even after completing the initial 2 year agreement. read more

This review is only for the "MUAY THAI" instructor. This "Muay Thai" instructor doesn't teach Muay Thai, he teaches whatever version of kickboxing he thinks is right... which is not because I've seen students beat him up. I've also seen him beat up his own students before, and past the point where he should be... I've seen other coaches work with students and this was no work... it was a bully trying to pick on someone who had less experience than him. When he "teaches" class, he has his kid running all over the gym, a kid play pin in the gym taking up space. The best part is when he throws the chair on the mat in front of the bag, yells in a super low voice a combination "jab, cross, switch kick" and sits down, starts scrolling through his phone. It's unfortunate because I feel like I've wasted so much time not being able to go to 3 classes he has throughout the day. The only viable Kickboxing/Muay Thai class is 5:30 Kickboxing which is hard to make. I've learned absolutely nothing from that class/instructor & have heard countless stories from others about this instructor. If you're coming here, it's a dope gym with dope people just stay away from this class whatever you do!! Go to the awesome jitz class with Coach Adam Bradley, absolutely top tier striking class with Coach Vince Salvador, incredible boxing program led by Coach Joe Vargas and Coach Basheer. This gym has a lot of gems & could be one of the best gyms in SD with a PROPER striking coach, not whatever they have teaching the 7am, 9am, 7pm classes. read more

After reading the reply from the manager, not only do I feel unheard as a potential customer, but also gaslit into thinking my experience wasn't true yesterday. I genuinely signed up for a time to come in, did not see anyone wear a mask or at the front desk waiting for people to check in. I don't expect someone to always be there but it was confusing who I can talk to for some help. Thank you for clarifying the hours when Kali is available, and that it is available at all. One of your staff members informed me that the Kali classes were cancelled for a while now and gave no reason why. And he did tell me to go find the trainer and see where he is working now. So idk if that was the staff member lying and shooing me away, or telling the honest truth. I now know that this gym definitely has a one sided agenda in mind and doesn't even want to reach out and resolve the situation I experienced. If I could give zero stars I would! Original review - I will preface: I do not have a membership, this is a review on just visiting the Arena on 3/20/21 and my interaction with a staff member. TLDR; Staff were not enforcing the mask rule. Only asked to sign up for the gym when I was told Kali is no longer offered. It was an awkward interaction and the location is pretty sketchy. I'm not so sure this is newbie friendly. Free trials are no longer offered. Hi, so, I was interested in starting Kali and joining a fighting gym to get some beginner training in the sport. I went through their website and saw they offered a free trial. I did the whole process, signed up for a date to visit, time that works for me, and thought I was set to go. Unfortunately when I arrived there was no one at, what I assume, is the front desk. I think someone named Dave eventually greeted me after about 5 minutes of waiting. The first thing he said to me was "Hi, my name's Dave how can I help you?" Also, no masks were actually being enforced, he did not wear a mask and he shook my hand which I immediately felt uncomfortable doing that and sanitized on my way out. Anyways -- I told him that I signed up for the free trial online and wanted to check out the gym. Then he said "Ah we don't do a free trial anymore because of COVID, pandemic...but uh, are you interested in signing up for a month to month? Or want a tour? Or..what?" Yea...that was a really stand offish interaction. I can feel the forced kindness he tried to impart, but it wasn't working. I let him know I just wanted to do Kali and pointed out that maybe updating the website would be helpful. He said "Yea we don't have an IT guy y'know. And as for the trainer in Kali, you can look at our website and contact him there." And so I thanked him for the time, sanitized my hands and left. When I got home though and re-checked their website, all of the coached have a biography but no form of contact. So in the end, I left with no real help or guidance on where I can contact this trainer for Kali and I'm shopping for other gyms now. I would recommend looking at gyms in Miramar. There is a fast turn-around for inquiring about more information and setting up a beginner class, anywhere else but The Arena. read more

Update In response to the owner's response: I was specifically speaking to the billing which is TERRIBLE for the members. I had a tumor the size of a softball in my abdomen. It was definitely a legitimate medical issue. And I believe I did have a freeze for a bit, but I still wasn't able to cancel after that. TOTAL NIGHTMARE. I was told by staff to contact this company (ABC financial) and it's been such a bad experience dealing with them. Whether management chooses to ignore the fact that using this billing management company is troublesome for their members is up to them as a business, but I wouldn't sign a subscription billing with this gym unless they change their billing vendor. Any time that I can Great instruction, great people to train with. My review is for the billing. What a nightmare. I had a severe medical condition for all of 2022 and couldn't train. I tried to cancel several times or at least put my account on freeze. They use this ridiculous company that I just found out today I have to send a certified letter to get them to cancel. It's CRAZY. This is after I called in to cancel back in October and was told it was taken care of. I've been unknowingly paying for the last 6 months since it's an automatic charge to my credit card. As a college student, I was referred to come here as an absolute novice boxer. I was skeptical at first since I have never put myself in a position to fight but I wanted to learn to better myself. I chose to pay for this membership per month instead of settling for my free college membership. After communicating what style, and getting help in what gear to pick, I was set to begin boxing. Thank you to Ken and another staff member. Transparently, they have great amenities, organized, and realistic. The Arena is a place for non soft people and people that are willing to work for what they want to learn. They offer different styles of fighting, as well as a mobile app that gives a lot of perks/ events/ communication. I feel that they have set a standard for a boxing gym (weight gym also included) and technical skills with great coaches. It's not a place for cardio kickboxing at your convenience. It's a place that gives you the tools and lessons to work on yourself at your own pace to better yourself. Great security, great deal for what you are getting, and honest people. As a beginner fighter that's a few weeks into my membership, I can tell you that I love The Arena and that I already feel at home here. All of the staff & coaches have been respectful & friendly. The other members of the gym have also been friendly & helpful in helping me to learn new martial arts. I already feel more confident when walking down the street & I love the absolute smorgasbord selection of classes... 150 a week! On a whim, I can go learn some grappling, submission or not, gi or not... some striking... Thai, American, Dutch... whatever I want, whenever I want. Also, unlike another nearby MMA gym, The Arena offers Judo classes. And you know... Ju can't use what judo know! In response to the few confused reviewers: As someone that offers contracts to millennials & generation Z'rs that have zero respect for their own word or signature on a contract, as part of my job... it almost gives me joy to see little snowflakes crying "beware of the contract.... waaah..." little crybabies, grow up, welcome to the real world! This gym is amazing if you plan on competing in any combat sport, or if you're looking for real self-defense ability. The instruction for each discipline is great. Brazilian jiu-jitsu, boxing, muay thai/kickboxing, judo, mma, etc. They probably have the most available classes w/the largest variety of combat sports of any gym in San Diego. The instruction is all quality too. Its a fighters gym, so there's plenty of guys there who will test you & help you get better as you're learning as well. Many other gyms with cardio kickboxing type programs may have legit technical classes too, but the clientele they attract aren't always the type to test you that you'd be able to defend yourself in real situations. HOWEVER, some do also have those tough individuals while also offering more amenities. For example, this gym does not have full locker rooms/showers, nor saunas, or those supplemental beneficial classes like yoga. It's purely combat, which is not good or bad, it just is. They are pretty expensive though. You could say they have that cost because of the amount of available classes, but the average person will only train 3 disciplines. Other gyms, nearby too, have many of the same classes & quality- in addition to having a sauna & locker rooms. It all comes down to instructor preference & what you can afford. I'm getting ready to come back to SD from overseas, and this update is long overdue. The ABC Financial did cancel my membership, after frustrating, annoying, long, and arduous process, with absurd steps and fees. It's just way too much hassle. I believe their payment system has been updated, which now you can do online. Besides my criticism of their payment system, my previous review of The Arena still stands. The gym itself, from the owner, staff, to the students, it's a tight knit group and I loved every class. You can't beat the price for the quality of training, coaching, and instructions from The Arena. They never have misled me on payments or membership before signing the contract as some other reviews claim. The extra fee that you pay every year for gym improvement, I've seen the upgrades over the years and it's not some scam for the gym to scape off more money from the members. The gym also has a weight room, it was racks, barbells, kettlebells, dumbells, tires, sledgehammers, and whatever equipment they've added since my last review for conditioning classes. Also it's free to use when class is not in session. Kru Mark, Chuck, Basheer, Barrett, Vice, Zibi, Jake, and all other coaches are absolutely phenomenal, approachable, and friendly, and the Arena will teach you everything from conditioning, striking, and grappling. And they will push you. They're not cardio kickboxing coaches teaching soccer moms and grade school kids and won't ask you to correct your technique with a "pretty please" with a cherry-on-top attitude. It's to the point and critical. These guys train fighters. Also, given that the average member is military and/or seasoned martial artist, it can be bit intimidating. But won't you rather have a good training partner rather than someone who's slightly more mobile than a training dummy? Arena is for everyone, from average Joe/Jill looking for martial arts instruction to people who are serious about MMA. Getting you in shape is a bonus, not the main objective. At first I really loved this gym. Really good coaches and a cool atmosphere. But they are crooks and liars. After a couple months of training I lost my job dude to COVID and could not afford the membership anymore. I spoke to someone on the phone, really wish I got their name, and he was very nice and understanding and he said that they will freeze my account until I am employed and finically ready to come back. He did NOT say the account would unfreeze at after a certain amount of time. A couple months go by, I'm still struggling looking for a job and I start getting letters in the mail from the arena saying I owe them over 1300$. I look at the bills and they did not freeze my account for a single month. They continued to charge me not only the monthly amount but late fees on top of that. Instead of ever trying to contact me and resolve this communication after they charge me every possible month and late fee they cancel my account and report me to customs. Now unless I pay over 1300$ for a gym membership I didn't ever use for a single day my credit will be ruined. I was literally just starting to get my life back together and land a job and finally start training again. I haven't gotten to train BJJ in like a year. I'm probably going to loose my home and my car now. I can't even afford food to feed my dog, and these people wanna be sneaky and pull this. I am not even upset, I am just sad. I've started training at this gym about 2.5 months ago and I love it! They have classes available all day, which is rare and accommodating. I've learned so much more than I've been able to learn at other places. The instructors are great! They help beginners but expect you to put your part in. It's combat training so it should be this way. If there is leeway people don't get ahead so I really like this. Its pretty big and clean. They have showers to use after your done training which is a plus. read more

Truly an outstanding gym. I've only visited a few local gyms during my 6 year stay in San Diego. I've been a member since 2012 and since then I've felt a part of a really close family that shared the passion of martial arts. Everyone is extremely humble and the curriculum is beginner friendly. Also for those looking for a challenge and andvance technique, the instructors are well skilled and extremely experienced to offer help to all levels of skill in jiu jitsu/Muay Thai/MMA/Boxing/wrestling.
