Signing my son up to do Jiu-Jitsu here has been the best decision I made all year. I called around to different studios and spoke with numerous coaches, but no one gave me "all the feels" like the owners of Six Blades and that was just by the initial phone call. I initially spoke with Professor Gustavo and relayed some of the struggles my son was going through and how I thought Jiu-Jitsu would be a good fit to improve overall health and confidence. He gave me a little of his background and in just telling me his story, it felt so relatable to my son. Then I got to Six-Blades and met with Megan and was blown away. It felt like I had known her for years. No crazy sales pitch. She just shared their goals, and it was evident that the impact they want to make on children, and the community was authentic. You can tell these people really care about the sport and treat the people they are teaching like family. My son will say things like "Mom, I can tell ALL of the coaches here really care about me," and not only does he feel like the coaches care about him, but they foster such a healthy sense of community that he feels welcomed and included by all the other students. I'm so thankful to Gustavo and Megan and ALL of the coaches because I feel like my son's confidence is growing as well as his athleticism, discipline, resilience and overall attitude. Clean, spacious mats, restrooms and showers, lockers, a fully equipped gym, and recovery options like a cold plunge, infrared sauna, and professional massage chairs. Everything is very clean. You can tell right away, even by how fresh the place smells. One of the best parts is the location. If you are a surfer like me, it is within walking distance of Tourmaline Surf Park, which makes it perfect to train after a session in the water. Parking is also very easy. I usually find a spot within 30 to 60 seconds since it is in a residential area and quieter during the times I train. They offer a variety of classes for all levels, along with yoga and personal training. What really stands out though is the community. Everyone is welcoming, supportive, and easy to get along with. I decided to try a class here because it was close by to where we were staying. I've only been doing BJJ for about six months, so I'm as new as they come. But I wanted to continue my training while on vacation. I showed up to a Wed 09 basics class and what absolutely COULD have felt incredibly intimidating, was anything but. I was the only female of maybe 10 to 11 students and 2 instructors. There were 2 other white belts in addition to me and the rest of the students were blue, purple and brown belts. I felt welcomed and safe and like I belonged there , regardless of my belt color or lack of time in the sport. I LOVED learning new techniques and getting different perspectives from the instructors and other higher belt students. Thank you for making this white belt rookie feel welcomed! On the day that we scheduled to come the sign in tablet was not finding our reservation. There was some confusion with the check-in as the tablet didn't recognize our name. Halfway through class we got pulled aside to sign a waiver at the front (just me). We also explained to them that we were contacted by someone and offered a free class. The class schedule is like a rotation. You get to hit the bags and move on to a bunch of core exercises. At the end of our class we had to "sign out". Which meant we had to talk to a rep at the front. I think they use that opportunity to sell us classes. It was kind of awkward because we were dead tired and I felt kind of put on the spot. I declined and the following 2 weeks after I received several voicemails of them wanting to offer me another free class. I don't think boxing is my thing personally, but I can see how this can be an effective HIT workout for those who would enjoy boxing. I would give this place a 3.5 round it up to a 4 because the instructor and employees were kind to us even though there was a miscommunication.
