I'm about to celebrate another Passover without my beloved grandmother's crystal wine glasses, all…read morethanks to White Glove Movers, who packed them so poorly that they literally managed to chip each and every one of those once-beautiful, antique, deeply-sentimental goblets.
That's not all they broke: Plates, bowls, a candelabra sconce, and a menagerie of other odds and ends also came out of the boxes at best chipped, but sometimes completely broken in pieces.
I've moved 8 times with professional movers as an adult. In all those moves, only two bowls have ever been broken. In each of those cases, the moving companies we hired compensated us for the losses, even though it was relatively small claim.
Why did these items break? Sloppy packing. Items were sometimes just tossed into a box with no packing paper separating them. My beloved goblets were left to jiggle around inside the dust storage containers I usually keep them in. All of the other stemware in other identical storage containers were packed more securely. None of them broke.
We didn't choose White Glove Movers, at least not the usual way. We were pressured to use them by our real estate agent, since we were moving on a fast timeline and he reassured us that these movers pack, move, and store items while our condo would be staged. I would've preferred to go with a company we'd already worked with, and with whom we'd had good experiences, like Delancey Street.
But we didn't really have time to take our time in making decisions, so we went with White Glove Movers. I will regret this decision for the rest of my life, on every major holiday, when I remember using my Nana's goblets as a child, and wish I could still keep that tradition alive as an adult.
These movers aren't cheap, either. They moved our 2 bedroom, 1 bath condo's worth of stuff, minus a lot of the big pieces of furniture, most of which we either sold or used as part of our staging. They stored our stuff for 2 months and 11 days, then moved it into our new place...which was right next-door to our old place.
The cost? $7,936.63!!!!!!!! I nearly had a heart attack when I heard that!!!
Every move we'd ever had in the past, with more furniture, further distance from place A to place B, more stairs, more parking issues, etc., cost us only a fraction of that!!! Even doubling our other moves doesn't come anywhere close to this figure.
Kevin Kehoe, the owner, was very slow to respond to phone calls and emails.
But worst of all, when we contacted Kevin about the many broken items and told him we only were asking for compensation to fix (not replace) the goblets, he curtly informed us that he had no intention of doing so, because, he said, we only had TWO WEEKS from the time of the move to get compensation from his insurance. WHO UNPACKS THEIR ENTIRE MOVE IN TWO WEEKS????
It's an unreasonably high bar that he'd set, knowingly, without making a firm point of letting us know that ahead of time, like a trap laid by a cunning spider, who knows that by the time you realize you're caught in the web, it's too late.
All I have to say is, DON'T use White Glove Movers & Storage unless you don't mind your property being poorly packaged and/or damaged, poor communication, exorbitant costs, and in the end, feeling punched in the gut when you are told by Kevin Kehoe that even though his employees packed your priceless family heirlooms incompetently, you are S.O.L. about getting compensated for your trouble.
I wrote this review with tears in my eyes and a hole in my heart. I've never felt so personally violated by a business before or since. It's one thing to do a job poorly; It's insult-to-injury to refuse to try to make the situation right. I will NEVER use this company again!!!
