The food was ok not bad to good. But the price was bad for the food and they took 20+ mins to make a Jr shake. Then when I saw her hand my shake to another couple and when i asked her about it again she said "we are backed up on shakes"; there were three or four tables. Came here after our trip from Mercy Hotsprings in Firebaugh because were were looking for a restaurant that we never tried, cheap, and was within distance. We ended up yelping and picking this place, which was a couple of exits away. Upon arrival we were suprised to find that the restaurant was a burger joint connected to a gas station, but gave them a shot anyways. I ended up ordering the original, but with double meat and my cousins ordered some of their specialty burgers and some frys. The burgers were pretty good and I wish that I had tried their famous milkshakes, good thing there's a location near Folsom. However, I took out 1 star because of the pricing, which from my perspective was a tad bit steap for being a fast food joint. Overall, I'll probably try them again. read more

Very good burgers with customization options. They share the location with the Mobil gas station, so it might be hard to find when you exit off the freeway. We tried the chicken burger and their beef classic burger, and added their onion rings side. My wife and I both agreed they were unexpectedly delicious for a fast food joint next to a gas station. The price was also competitive for customized burgers. We'll stop by again the next time we do a road trip to LA. read more

Very pleasant surprise. This will be our new stop on our trips to SF. I am sure my husband and his co workers who frequent this area will be stopping frequently. Kids got the burger and fries and chicken strips. We got chicken strips and bacon burger with onion rings. The onion rings were so yummy. The burger was so good and the strips where super juicy. I'm usually not a fan of fast food restaurants attached to gas stations as they are often not very clean and the food not fresh. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find this sparkling clean Wayback Burger at a Mobil station on the I-5. The young man that took my order was very professional and patiently explained all of the toppings I could have on my burger. The lettuce and tomatoes that were put onto my just cooked burger were very fresh. The french fries were freshly made and they were great. I will definitely stop at Wayback Burgers again when I'm in the area. read more

The only complaint I have is there are not more of these places. The Panoche exit Wayback is 75 miles away from where I live but I keep looking for an excuse to go there. Never been here before. Not many choices on this part of the road. Once you accept that you are going to pay a little more it is easy to keep an open mind about the food. We are a family of 3 our bill was $32. I had a single, it was good. My husband had a turkey burger which he said was the best he has had outside of home. My daughter had a veggie burger which packed a lot of flavor. The side fry is plenty for one person the next size up is enough for two. Over all the service was good and fast. This was disappointing, I would probably been happier at the foster freeze right down the street. To begin, they share their bathroom with the gas station they are attached to and the men's bathroom was dirty and smelled. 1 Star. The restaurant appears to be cleaner. 3 Stars. Service wasn't very friendly or helpful. 3 Stars. The food overall was forgettable. Fries and onion rings were the worst part of the meal. Onion rings were bland and almost nonexistent of onion. 2 Stars Fries were bland and tasted cheap and frozen. 2 stars I had the original burger with cheese and it's nothing to brag about, it come with the usual condiments but compared to some of the other burger chains, this burger is just a basic burger. 3 Stars Now the chocolate shake is definitely winner and that I would be willing to stop and get if I was in the neighborhood wanting a chocolate shake. 5 Stars. Don't let the gas station fool you- this is like the In & Out of roadside fast food options where I saw my food cooked fresh to order *not heated up like all the other fast food crap* The reviews I read encouraged me to try this place & it did not disappoint. The grilled chicken sandwich was EXACTLY the healthier option I was looking for in a desert oasis of fastfood grease up and down the 5 fwy. It was cooked fresh to order and very tasty. I could not resist ordering the fries as we overheard someone at the gas station saying they were cooked perfectly and they are. I also got the chocolate shake made from real ice cream which was good but for the $3.00 Junior size price- really small. Definitely will stop here again on all my future 5 freeway California road trips. *as for people who say they had to wait 20 minutes for food- I also had to wait as my chicken was cooked but isn't that the point? Food should take time to cook- If you get your food in 5 minutes from fast food sorry to say it was pre-cooked and reheated. read more

Not bad for a chain burger restaurant. Serving size is very reasonable, little on the pricey side for a burger. I usually get a kids's meal since I do have little ones and it is more than enough for me. Quality of food is better than McDonald's but the closest location from Stockton is in Tracy or Sacramento. Great that they make it how you like it, whatever condiments you want and they do have plenty to choose from. It is usually not as packed like other fast food burger restaurants. Okay so... can we PLEASE talk about one of the new best pit stops from NorCal to SoCal on the 5?!! Since I live in the outskirts of the Bay and travel down to SoCal at least twice a year or more to see family and such, the 5 is the biggest drag of necessary road to take but this place makes it at least a little bit bearable. The 5 still sucks. But Wayback is delivering straight to the point, made to order, American done right. I had a burger with some customized extras in there, housemade chips and a black and white shake and my friend had a cod sandwich, fries and a coffee shake. Shakes were great and probably the item we were the most excited about getting when we came back. The burger and sandwich were delicious although I'm just not a big fan of Potato bread. A burger oasis in a bleep-forsaken food desert. This is my go-to burger joint whenever my friends and I drive on I5 road trips. Worth the wait and passing up the fast food at other rest stops. Wish they closed later so we don't have to drive 100mph to make it by closing (yeah, the things we do to avoid the fake meat fast food chains). Good thing they stayed open an hour late on Labor Day weekend and we made it with burgers to spare :) Clean bathrooms a big plus. By far the best "fast food" 5 freeway burger place between Sacramento and Los Angeles! I usually stop at the In & Out a couple of exits north, but am so glad I stopped here instead. Incredible cheeseburger for around $7.00, (slightly more than most chains, but less than sit down restaurants), plus a great shake brought the total to about $12.00, but the quality was better than any fast food out there. Fresh and cooked to perfection. Service was excellent. It appeared only one guy was working, but he was knowledgeable, helpful and cooked the food while juggling customers at the register. The bathroom in the adjoining quickee mart could have used a little more attention, but that belonged to the store, not Wayback. If you're looking for a great place to get food, petrol, restroom and such, this is the perfect stop on your journey. I see that everyone raves about the food, but says it takes a while if they're slammed. I would recommend pulling up, ordering your food from the cashier, then going next door to use the restroom, get petrol, stretch your legs etc. The point is, fresh food takes a few minutes more to prepare, but it's so worth it on a seven hour drive. enjoy! read more

(I did not get that) You can build you own and everything is free except the cheese and bacon. Their "specialty" menu does not due them justice because again you can add and subtract, these are just suggested items. They Need Their "BUILD YOUR OWN" the focus of their menu. It would go something like this. Cause you can put as many items you like on your burger for free except Bacon and Cheese. 1. Choose and item. Hamburger, Hot Dog, Nachos, Chicken, Fish, (These can all be made Spicy, Buffalo or Regular) 2, Add your favorite toppings (list toppings_ 3. Would you like to add Avocado ($1), Bacon ($1) or Cheese ($1) Make it A Combo (3.49) Choice of Fries, Chips , or Onion Rings. Make it WAYBACK STYLE CHEESE/ONION/BACON (ADD 2.49) (Doube Way Back Side $3.49) And A Small Beverage. Upgrade to Medium Fries/Drink (.89) Large $1.09 ***YOUR OPTIONS ARE ENDLESS***ONE STOP SHOP FOR ALL THE PRODUCTS THE OTHER GUYS HAVE BUT MADE FRESH WITH REAL 100% MEAT! Then they can have a side menu with the other small items and kids meals. So needless to say their "specialty items needed alot of work and are redundant. For Example, Spicy Buffalo Chicken (JACK IN THE BOX), Rodeo Burger (CARL's JR) , Buffalo (KFC). There is nothing special or unique about these specialties!!!! Your marketing catch should be a simple menu that allows you to get everything all the other places have but everything is fresh and you get to choose it your way! Now let's talk about the SHAKES! These shakes taste like ice cream with flavoring. How about some fresh frozen fruit to go in them and stop the lousy SYNTHETIC flavoring and modest cookies, etc. Onion Rings are first class all the way! Other than hand cutting them dipping them in buttermilk and egg, dusted in flour and holding in freezer this was the second best thing. Service was great however part of the stove was off and there were small pieces of meat in a paper boat (bowl) as if they were saving what fell off to make chili. The grease on the sides of the bowl were noticeable and the cold left overs that looked like they were just thrown there instead of the trash. Not to mention they were on the griddle and turned off or not is a total safety hazard. I understand it was probably to make chili however, it needs to be kept in a silver pan on low heat and covered to prevent flies and larva being placed their by bugs. The meat was no seasoned properly so in addition to getting a very small amount of sauce it made it taste dry. The toasted bun was an excellent touch! Best bun around! Besides the grill looking dirty, both gargage cans were full to the top and both barrels on top to put your plates were stacked high and full so I had to leave my plate on the table so they could clean at their leisure. And I say at their leisure because it was not so busy the 45 mins we were there something could not have been done. With the current menu, you are going to have to have your cashier's ask have you been here before, if the answer is no, then they need to explain the menu emphasizing the build your own concept and all the freebies they can have on their items. This place can truly be the next big thing however, they need to get a grip on their menu board and how they market or as fast as they come in they will be going out. OH YEAH, I did not learn until later with your combo you could do half ring/fries. My 3 starts are being given on the potential this place has and hopefully a flag things need to start changing there or this is going to be equivalent to the whole cold stone and the arizona political figure who put their restaraunts up anywhere and everywhere with no support so this person could make money off the franchise fee and run away. Could this be one of those? I hope not cause I know people who are spending money in something they believe in with good reason but current management within the fachise relations are doing people a big dis-service. read more
