Trying this place again after a few years. It was a participating restaurant in San Antonio's Burger Week. I got the advertised Burger Week offering which was their "Cheesy". The burger comes with 2 patties and FOUR slices of American cheese. They put it on an "inverted" burger bun...(which gives it a look and flavor like Texas toast). I snagged the burger for $4.99 for the Burger Week special and grabbed a side of O rings and took it home. There was nothing wrong with the burger or the rings, but there wasn't much noteworthy either. It was a VERY cheesy burger. It came with no toppings, sauces, etc. which may have added the "kick" of flavor that I was looking for. The cheese was righteous however and certainly hit the mark. When you walk in, you'll have a sanitizer station for you to clean your hands with alcohol, if you wish. Very quiet place and able to chill out with friends. This place needs some help. Interesting with Nestle and Wayback sharing a common seating area. We ordered chili cheese fries, classic burger, and double bacon burger at the counter and sat down at a free table (not cleaned). Then we waited. And waited. And waited. The atmosphere is very nice and clean. The food may look a bit off putting but it was delicious. My complaint is the service takes an awfully long time. I've never made a review before.. but now I feel like I'm inclined to make one because of how rough the food was here. Let it be noted I work in food service so I know how things are and I try my best not to be harsh when it comes to things like this. But dang, this place was bad.. My girlfriend and I came by last week to get a milk shake but saw the prices and decided to go somewhere else but were captivated by the smell. We were excited about the shakes but they said they had no milk so shakes were out!! So upsetting but oh well, it happens. A little under $30 for two burgers two sides and two drinks isn't too bad, especially if you take the pictures into consideration on the menu. They advertise quite hearty burgers so it didn't seem too bad. As I said before, I work in food service so I unfortunately notice things that I shouldn't.. The tables as well as the salt and pepper shakers had a sticky residue.. fountain drink counter was filthy, minute made juice spills everywhere and didn't seem to be properly kept. Ignoring all this, I decided to just let the food do the talking. We didn't get our food for 50 minutes! And when we finally did the burgers looked small and the fries and tots tasted bland. My tater tots were smooth to the touch and tasted of old oil. Something I'm way too familiar with the taste of... I figured I waited 50 minutes so I better get crispy tots, so I asked the chashier if I could get mine replaced. But alas... the tots tasted and looked like they were just refried and not replaced.. I hate to jump to conclusions so I decided to be more positive about it. But the taste of old oil made it taste like the crispy tots had been sitting in the bottom of the fry filter! Such a nasty aftertaste. Burger was bland, but looked presentable. Unfortunately everything just tasted.. old? Withered lettuce and slimy feeling pickles? Wet and greasy bun and a Pattie that would make one of those Big AZ pre packaged cheese burgers seem gourmet. I'll be honest I was Incredably upset the smell of the place didn't match the flavor. I asked for the bacon to be added on and they were gracious about it. However, when they brought it back the tomato on it had a bite out of it. I would easily give this place half a star if I could . The food was below mid. We came in expecting the place to be open at 10am like it says on the window and when we walk in and ask for burgers and chicken sandwiches they say "we can't make burgers or chicken yet due to cross contamination" understandable but maybe get 2 grills ? On top of this they couldn't even make pancakes for breakfast so we had to settle for a few breakfast options that weren't even that good that we could easily make at home. I love Wayback burger but after this location consistently messing up my orders and orders of friends and family I felt a review was earned. For some reason this particular location consistently misses some part of the order or other type of error. My side hustle is with UberEats and every time I pick up an order from here I get the little warning that the customer has had issues in the past with this store..literally every customer. I was not blown away with Wayback Burgers. The burgers are OK. The meat wasn't seasoned very much, the produce on the burger was very fresh and the bun was good, but fell apart very easily. We ordered the O-fries to share, but it ended up being a pretty small portion. It wasn't anything special either. We ordered an Oreo Mudpie shake and strawberry shake and they are OK as well. I preferred the strawberry shake out if the two. The Oreo Mudpie shake had a coffee flavor which I was not expecting. This leads me to the next point. The menu is pretty vague. It doesn't give the listing if ingredients on the burgers or the shakes. I would prefer to know what I am getting. At this particular location, there was a Nestle Tollhouse Cookies inside as well. We ordered sugar cookies and snickerdoodles to go. They tasted like they were both very underseasoned. There was almost no sugar or cinnamon flavor on either cookie. I would recommend they be a little more heavy handed on the sugar and cinnamon. Most people that order a sugar cookie or snickerdoodle want to taste the sugar. I will likely go back to Wayback Burgers again because it is convenient, but I would not go out of my way to eat there is you want ro try it. read more
