Price wise I believe is different depending on where you start. We alway stick to the return instead of one way. The station itself is pretty big. Lots of terminals so make sure to check the schedule to see where your train is at. Sometimes schedule changes so also be aware. There's a good amount of quick and easy eating places. Coffee shops as well. Right in the heart of the station, you'll find a couple of things to do. Mainly grab a drink if your waiting for your train.... lol... There alway security on hand if you have any questions about anything. The stations where you get on and off the train is pretty long so it could be a walk to exit if you're coming off from the end of train. It's a couple of flights on the escalator till you reach the top. There's an indoor waiting area as well as public restrooms. But if it's your first time, it could be a little intimidating finding your way around. Also a few different ways to enter and exit.

Edinburgh Waverley is nestled between the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh. It is surrounded by some…read morefamous 'neighbors' including Princes Street, Princes Street Gardens, and North Bridge- all of which are overseen by the imposing fortress, Edinburgh Castle. Visitors arriving into Edinburgh generally do so via one of two routes - fly into the city's airport, or disembark from a train at Waverley Station, the largest and most central of the city's two major stations. Waverley offers by far the most dramatic welcome into the city, with visitors emerging right into the heart of Edinburgh, with the castle ahead of you, the Old Town to the left, and the Scott Monument and New Town along to the right: it's kind of overwhelming while exiting. note: they have lift to take you to road level. Fact: it's the world's only railway station named after a work of literature. but prior to the station being named Waverley, it was formerly the North British Railway Station - run by the North British Railway company. There was a time when Scotland was referred to as 'north Britain', which may shed light on some of the country's identity issues!

There's…read moreonly 5 platforms but it's a really handy place for the station so if I can use this station rather than Waverley I usually do. Given that a good number of both commuter and longer distance trains stop here, I often can. Virgin, TransPennine Express, CrossCountry and Scotrail all use this station, so although it's Edinburgh's second station it can still get pretty busy at times. I find it easier to navigate than Waverley, though, and this makes up for it. There's loads of bike racks right outside and you can get taxis and buses from here too but there's no car parking that I've seen. In particular, though, it's the place to start if you're heading to Edinburgh Airport by bus. There are ticket machines and ticket barriers and the station is staffed full time. There's free WiFi through Scotrail, payphones, ATMs etc. Toilets are on platform 4. There's also a couple of coffee stands and a small M&S Simply Food.

There's a lot of sway at the back of the bus up top and turning corners feel like you are floating. The price point is low and it's a a nice way to spend an hour.

At any rate... my trip between Edinburgh and London was effectively on the party train! It seemed like everyone else in my coach car had brought on board bountiful bottles of booze, and you could hear it for the entire trip... In fact, not only did the girls in the seats in front of me have cider and chianti, they'd brought fun penis straws to drink out of, too. Unfortunately, I ascertained that they had -neglected- to bring their tickets, based on a huffy, loud, and lengthy conversation with the train conductor. Needless to say, the less-than-lovely ladies were punted at the next station. Toodles! On an up note, I did make it in one piece from Point A to Point B. And that's what transportation is for, right?

If you're traveling from the airport to the city/the city to the airport, the Tram is absolutely…read morethe most efficient, cost-effective, and fastest way to travel. There are plenty of signs throughout the airport indicating where you need to go to get the Tram (though, heads-up, depending on what gate you're coming from/going to, it could be a very long walk). Pass the enormous E D I N B U R G H letters outside the airport, and you'll see the ticket kiosks (pricing is currently £7.50 for a single, or £9.50 for an open return - the better value! I think you also save 50p if you pre-purchase online). Trams to the city from the airport run every seven to ten minutes, it takes about thirty to thirty-five minutes from the airport to either the Princes St or St Andrews Square stop (admittedly, I've never traveled beyond these two stops). There's spacious luggage racks to store your bags, plenty of seats for everyone, and it's noticeably clean as well. Make sure you have your ticket on you so they can check it (because they will). This is definitely the least stressful way to travel to/from the airport!

Or if they have a kiosk located in the station, it needs to be better posted. Once you find the place, expect to be extremely pleased. Courteous service from a clerk who probably deals with tourists like me (unlikely they can be even more clueless than me) all day but was patient in explaining the day ticket deal (£3 all day) and how the tickets work (just scratch off today's date and go) and providing me with a map of the bus routes. Five minutes later, I was at the bus stop. And five minutes later than that, I was taking a front row seat in the double-decker that brought me to the hotel. The day pass is probably the best method if you're planning on riding at least three buses in a day, otherwise you can pay on board. Exact change only. Or if you're in Edinburgh for more than a few days, consider one of the weekly/monthly/annual passes. Yes, they accept credit cards. Even the swipe and sign ones we Americans carry. And yes, they spoke English that was clear enough for me, a Yank, to understand. :)

One of my favourite things about Edinburgh is Lothian Buses. The bus services that they run across…read morethe city are unmatched, and it is one of the best bus providers that I have come across in the UK. They have three city centre travel shops, which provide information about all of the services that they offer, and I visited the one on Waverley Bridge. I went in as I needed to purchase a Ridacard - a card which you can pay for a period of time, whether it is a week, month, or year and get unlimited travel on their buses during this period. Staff were quick and efficient in providing me with the form I needed to fill, taking a photo for the card there and then, and producing the card itself. All in all, the process must have taken around 10 minutes. The shop is well stocked with timetables and all of the information you could possibly need for bus travel in and around Edinburgh. There was also a selection of information for tourists, and during the time I was there, a number of tourists came in asking for directions, which the staff were happy to provide. This travel shop is a great reflection of a superb bus company. Once the trams are up and running, they will be able to add another string to what is already a pretty large bow.
