Amazing vacation spot and so close to the ocean. You can hear the waves at night and the staff is always friendly. Definitely plan on staying again.

My family has had a timeshare here for about 3 decades and it's always such a treat to get to stay here! It seems that several of the reviews knock off stars based on the resort being "outdated" or "not luxurious," which is a shame, because the beauty of Wave Crest has always been it's charming, cozy, beach cottage vibe. It's not trying to be a Ritz or Four Seasons, but more like a nice California beach style B&B (without the second 'B' or breakfast part). Location is perfect and within walking distance to so many great restaurants, boutiques, Seagrove Park, and of course, the beach! The pool is small, but the view can't be beat! Just a perfect little cliffside (heated) swimming pool and jacuzzi, complete with an outdoor shower and BBQ area. The landscaping and walkways around the property are very well maintained, and the units we get every year have always been clean, bright, and either have a full or partial view of the ocean. There's even a community room with complimentary tea and coffee daily, lounge area, movies, magazines, and daily newspapers. Sure it's a little "old school," I mean there are even still VHS players in the rooms, but all that just adds to it's charm.

Early morning view from our unit patio.

Parking was valet only which was quick and seamless (and free!). The staff at the entry of the hotel was super helpful in providing directions to get down to the pool as one of my girlfriend's said it was a little confusing to find, but I was given a clear guide on how to get down there and got there without issue. We had our own server at the cabana who provided us with our free fruit plate and bottle of bubbly to share, and took food and drink orders. She and her coworkers checked on us pretty frequently and kept us well-stocked. The day was a little overcast and cloudy but the pool was a lovely cool temp, and the jacuzzi was in the same general area so when we got a little chilly we hopped on over. After spending some time in the adult-only pool area, we headed up to the family friendly deck and took a couple of runs down the slides, which was super fun. Around the time we were meant to clear out, our server was super sweet and let us know they would just start to pick up around us but we were welcome to stay longer if we wanted to, since there was no one coming in behind us. We continued relaxing until we were all ready to go but first we got to chatting with another staff member, Bryan, who was super rad and shared all his favorite nearby spots to eat. The staff is really so wonderful here! Very friendly and professional. Overall my first visit to the Park Hyatt Aviara was very enjoyable, and I would absolutely visit again (preferably on a hot, sunny day). Highly recommend for any and all poolside celebrations!

This is for the Spa…read more.. The spa opens at 7 AM and there I was. I came in through the gates of the gated community and parked in the self parking lot at the spa. Waited in front for five minutes and the doors opened! I felt like putting my face against the window while I waited and say, "open, open, open". I was greeted by a lovely young woman who checked me in and walked me around the grounds to show me around. As I came so early, I had the place to myself for the first two hours. I used the gym, took a swim, went in a couple of Jacuzzis until my girlfriends arrived at 9:30 AM. I'm more of an introvert, so it was perfect. Altogether, we took a yoga class at the beautiful yoga pavilion. We sat by the pool and had a lovely lunch. The food was excellent, including the complementary treats and banana bread. The only negative about the pool was that we were told if we left for more than 20 minutes our belongings would be removed. We couldn't hold our chairs for the day. That was news to us. It was a warm 90° day on a Friday in March and the community and hotel is allowed to use the spa grounds and they all showed up. Every lounge chair was full. Note to self: come Monday through Thursday. The massage: I'm going to say it's one of the best massages I've ever had in my life (and I've been to other five star spas). Pure bliss. Jackie was my masseuse. She listened to me when I asked for stronger pressure and then from there, I went into another world of goodness. She had such love in her eyes when it was all done. This is the most expensive massage I've ever had in my life. Around $400 for a 60 minute massage (with tax and tip) not including lunch. But treating ourselves once in a while is worth it. We felt like we were princesses. Yes, we'll be back. Maybe a while from now to save up our pennies, but we will be back.

Beautiful Grounds, But Not the Five-Star Experience I Expected…read moreI visited Rancho Valencia on my birthday expecting a true five-star experience, and while there were genuinely lovely moments, the overall visit fell short of what a resort at this level should deliver. A few things worth knowing before you book: they do not offer a day pass. Access to the resort is granted by booking a service through their spa, which is fine in principle. What's not fine is their pricing transparency. The rates listed on their website are not what you'll actually pay. Pricing changes based on demand, time of day, and availability. I received two different booking confirmations for the same treatment at two different prices, neither of which matched what was on their site. When I asked at check-in, they explained their dynamic pricing model casually, as if it were common knowledge. It isn't, and it should be disclosed at the time of scheduling. No one mentioned it when I called to book. The check-in staff was cordial, but the energy made it clear they were sizing me up. It was subtle and perhaps unintentional, but noticeable enough to color the start of my day. The property itself is genuinely beautiful. Lush grounds, a cold plunge, multiple pools, and access to yoga and fitness classes throughout the day. The yoga class I attended was listed as intermediate to moderate, but the instructor, who normally teaches the advanced class, ran it at a moderate to advanced pace. I was the only person in the room at the intermediate level and spent more of the class struggling than unwinding. The food and beverage program is what you'd expect at a resort of this caliber. When I booked my massage, I specifically requested champagne for my birthday. It was noted. It was never offered, not before my treatment, not during, and not after. That kind of detail is exactly what separates a five-star experience from a four-star one, and it was simply forgotten. My massage therapist was outstanding. She was thorough, skilled, and clearly excellent at her craft. She identified tension I didn't even know I was carrying and worked through it with real intention. She was the highlight of the day without question. Rancho Valencia is a stunning property that has the bones of an exceptional experience. But the lack of pricing transparency, the inconsistent service details, and the atmosphere at check-in kept it from living up to its reputation. I'm not sure I'd return.

Best birthday stay ever!!…read more When I first arrived, I was nervous because I haven't booked a place this fancy before and used Chase Travel to book for the first time. The staff immediately put me at ease and made me feel welcome. Lorenzo greeted me at the front desk and said happy birthday. He also gave me some free drink vouchers to use at the hotel restaurants and upgraded my room! The room was so big and clean and relaxing. My boyfriend has really bad insomnia but he said he actually slept great! I let him sleep in while I explored the hotel cafe and lounged on the balcony. There was a few parties and events going on that day (June 25th) but we couldn't hear a thing, at all. Our suite had a huge soaker tub and a huge shower that came in clutch, they even have complimentary bath salts and all the soaps! If you want more, they sell nice stuff in the gift shop, too. We also went to the cafe for breakfast burritos and coffee and both were a great way to start our day. Highly recommend staying here for a celebration. I felt like royalty and would love to come back. Shout out to Lorenzo and the team!

With the Platinum perks, early check-in and late checkout are often available, but because it was a busy holiday weekend, they couldn't guarantee early check-in. They suggested coming in early and waiting by the pool until a room was available. Parking was easy: self-parking was around $46 per night with valet adding $10 more (roughly $56 total). Self-parking is only a short walk from the entrance so it wasn't inconvenient at all. Check-in itself was quick. The front desk staff provided a property map, and once I got to the room and dropped off my things, the whole resort honestly felt like walking into an oasis. The grounds are beautifully maintained and genuinely stunning. The pool area was enjoyable, but very busy, especially over the weekend. A note for future guests: lounge chairs go fast. I went around 4:30 PM on Sunday and again around 2 PM on Monday and most chairs were already taken. We were able to snag some on Monday, and it helped that the umbrellas can be adjusted for more sun or shade. The pool had a lively feel with families and kids, all well-behaved and enjoying themselves. There's also a nice jacuzzi and a pool bar where you can order food and drinks, plus a solid selection of craft beer. Dinner at Mustangs & Burros was a highlight. The burger was excellent, and the guacamole is a must-order starter. I also used my $100 Amex hotel credit here, which was a plus. The room itself was cute and comfortable, though fairly simple. It had a shower rather than a bathtub. The mattress was on the firmer side for my taste, and I would have appreciated complimentary bottled water in the room, but it was easy enough to have some delivered via Uber Eats. Breakfast at Greenfinch was the most underwhelming part of the stay. The Amex Platinum breakfast benefit covered up to $60 for two, but the quality didn't quite match the rest of the property experience. On the plus side, the resort grounds are incredible. The butterfly sanctuary, botanical garden, and wishing tree add a peaceful, unique touch to the property. I did wish there was a clearer setup for the wishing tree notes, but it was still a charming feature. Overall, the stay was excellent. The service was consistently friendly and efficient, the atmosphere was relaxing, and the property itself is beautiful. Despite a couple of small drawbacks, I would absolutely return. This was an ideal San Diego staycation. One note for future guests: make sure to carefully check your final bill at checkout. I was accidentally double-charged for dinner, charged for valet despite using self-parking, and billed for breakfast. They initially said everything had been adjusted, but I later noticed I had paid for self-parking on my credit card and then again at checkout. One of the restaurant charges also wasn't removed. The staff member I spoke with was very friendly and quick to help resolve it, but it was still a bit frustrating to leave thinking everything was settled, only to have to take additional time afterward to correct the billing issues.

Golf course maintenance crews are up and at it, around 6:30 in the morning(!!). Needless to say, we didn't get much sleep and, when asked to change rooms, they were booked and had nothing available for us. As for dining... "room service" is a joke where you order online, get charged $40 for them to bring it to your room and, it's cold by the time it gets there. We had Easter brunch at Vue which was just ok. I got the eggs Benedict which, when cut open, revealed clear runoff of barely cooked egg - instantly made my hunger disappear. My husband's breakfast, the chorizo scramble, and son's breakfast, pancakes, were totally fine and edible. For the amount of money it is to stay here, I think it's 1000% overrated and we'll skip it next time we're in SD, for sure. There's really no need to come here.

Suddenly, I'm told they're "not the same company." Interesting, since L'Auberge magically had availability that weekend. Guess problem-solving was sold out too. RCI confirmed that overbooking is not an approved reason to relocate guests. Andrew Faiella, the GM, was about as helpful as the last-minute email. RCI confirmed they were not notified by Villa L'Auberge also on this matter.
