This really is a bit of a gem of a place so I almost don't want to tell people about it! The facility is lovely and, even though it's an old building, they keep it very fresh and clean looking with updated furnishing and fixtures while still maintaining a very homey feel. I love it when the fires are going and the bar is very cozy and bright. On this occasion, we chose the dining room. When we arrived, we were taken to a table in one of the larger rooms in the back that are more typically used for events. It was a lovely room but I preferred to be somewhere a little closer to the bar and main, older part of the building. The hostess was perfectly accommodating and this was no problem. Instead, my husband and I put in our orders at the bar while we had a drink and when our food was ready, they took us to a different table. The service was completely friendly and efficient. The food was absolutely delicious. I had a hard time choosing what to order, but settled on the fresh hake with roast potatoes, tomatoes and cauliflower puree. It was so so good. I ate everything. My husband got a steak and chips, which were perfectly cooked. The meals around ours looked very good, too. Donegan's also pulls a brilliant pint and we had both Guinness and Smithwicks. Based on the location and decor, one would not expect too much about the food. Our group of 4 ordered 4 different dishes, with mine being the pan fried Hake. Well let me tell you, all 4 dishes were licked clean by the end of the meal! That should tell you something about the taste. We were initially blown away by the presentation of our dishes. Again, we didn't expect such level of presentation that's typically seen at fine dining establishments, not a rusty boat in the middle of a small town. Once we tasted our food we were even more surprised as all 4 dishes were as delicious as they looked. This restaurant is a must try if you're in Belfast!

The beer menu seemed somewhat limited but that could also be due to Covid and how much they're able to supply at the moment. We sat in their outdoor seating area which is OK - they've definitely done their best to try and stay open and meet the restrictions! I think I will enjoy it better when the indoor dining reopens though as it's hard to make a tent attractive. This is a great little off-the-beaten-track place though and I do hope to be back soon.

Walking through the bar I was sure we were going to a seat at the back, away from the windows, but large double doors opened into a bright modern restaurant, with a wonderful view of the sea through windows that run the full length of the the dining area. The food was very nice, and the view and surroundings were pretty spectacular. The sun was shining, and two horses were cantering down the beach. We went for a stroll along the sea front after our meal. Very idyllic.
