FYI, in light of the fact that I see most of my complaints echoed by others here, I've also shared this review with the practice (they sent me a "rate your experience" email) so that they might be more aware of the customer service issues that many clients have experienced:
Dr. Koumjian was kind at first but quickly cooled when I didn't want to buy frames or receive the upgraded, $50-150, non-insurance-covered scan of my eyes. She told me about this scan in the middle of the waiting room without offering the chance to decline it and seemed genuinely surprised when I did decline--and still pushed hard for me to take it during my entire office visit. That felt un-doctorly and made me feel unwelcome. Her assistant (young woman) was sweet and professional when working with me. Yet there were other issues:
1. Signs around the building told me the lot was "actively towed" but the front desk staff (Peter?) told me I'd be "fine wherever as long as I didn't park in the Strawberry Fields daycare". When another client called while I was in the waiting area, he gave the client specific spaces to park in. Naturally, the conflicting advice made me wary of a $150 tow.
2. When I entered the office, the assistant was having a very loud and agitated conversation with her college registrar about the cost of a summer course. She even paused to go complain to the doctor about it, delaying my appointment.
3. The front desk attendant curtly demanded that I create a portal login and password (aka secure personal information) and write it on a slip of paper for him. When I *politely* declined, he grabbed the slip from my hands, tore it up, and said "fine."
3. Dr. Koumjian put a VERY hard sell on me for frames even though I politely told her my husband and I needed to buy them elsewhere. She said things like, "Just find a few pairs to show your husband," and "Just find a few pairs in case you want to come back"--on and on after I said no. When I politely declined, she deposited me at the front desk and walked off without so much as a thank you or goodbye.
4. When I checked out, the machine initially had an error and declined my card. The front desk attendant rudely *tossed* my card at me without even looking up and loudly said, "Your card is declined." There were other customers in the store at this point and given his volume and the loud way he declared it, it genuinely felt like he was trying to embarrass me, if I was someone who embarrasses easily! At the very least he was acting without regard to others. I asked him to run it again and it worked for which he had no reply (or apology) but again tossed my card back without looking at me. Obviously, this is a delicate situation and was HIS machine's mistake--the situation requires greater care and kindness.
Unfortunately, the rudeness with which I was treated will keep me from returning or recommending this practice and has already caused me to discourage two local friends from using Watertown Eye. read more
