Originally it was not a big deal to drive over there but the last two times I went, it took over an hour to go 8.1 miles due to traffic. In one case, I had to reschedule before I was over 15 minutes late even though I had called to let them know. Was able to reschedule and got in the same day. I've been a patient since sometime this summer. My wife found this practice and moved over sometime around the first of the year. Reason she moved is that we are both Seniors and have Medicare Advantage Plans with Dental Benefits. For some reason, we could never get them to bill our Insurance Company. Granted the coverage was not that much but a couple of thousand is a couple of thousand that does not come out of my pocket. Her Dentist is Dr. Allison Kelleher and she loves her and the great service she gets. I have Dr. Andy Pernell and he was the founder of this Service. When I came over, I already knew that I had some major issues related to resorption of tissue under the gums. On the initial examination, Dr. Pernell also that I had a cavity under a bridge under my upper molars. Made an appointment and came back and the bridge was removed, the cavity was filled, and a temporary bridge installed. Went back last week and got the permanent bridge installed. This was the first cavity I've had in over 10 years. I have an appointment in January to address the resorbtion issues on the lower molars. That said he referred me to Dr. Getz at North State Perio and he has examined me and we are schedules for planning and deep cleaning in December.

We also talked about my night grinding & an in office retainer was built. I had the crown done & I am so thrilled with the easy painless process. This is such a stark difference from the dentist I saw in Maryland. I had never had real dental work done before and at my prior dentist they identified I needed a crown. It was such a traumatizing experience that I was terrified when Summit advised I needed another one done. I also was given a plastic mold at the prior dentist that I had to put in hot water and try to fit myself - It never worked and it made me gag so I just stopped using it. Such a drastic difference between these offices- thank you Summit. My dentist fears are now gone.

This is after I informed them that I had to be finished at a specific time. I tried making a appointment, specified I needed it between 1130 and 1230. They sent a email saying my appt was at 1030. They just don't listen very well.

This supposed professional Dentist operates without regard to ethics or consideration of patients. As with most, if you miss an appt., you will be required to make payment for time lost. Guess that doesnt apply the other way around. I referred my son, who happens to be single parent of two young children after losing his wife in a wreck, to Dr. Avason. My middle age son has a very tight schedule raising two kids and with his hectic job. He had an appt. but arrived 3 minutes late and was met by a very rude mid twenties male employee asking why are you late? calling him by his last name. My son says either call me by my first name or its Mr. to you young man. I drove through traffic which was heavy at times why? Well Dr. Avason is in surgery and cant see you would you like to reschedule? Or can you be back at 330pm? No my son indicated I had an appt. Which is it...because I'm 3 minutes late or he can see me later due to not scheduling his appts properly? The boy employee was extremely rude and unprofessional. My son rightfully told him just forget it I'll find another dentist with standards. I drove 45 minutes for nothing and dont appreciate it. Dr. Avason also knew full well my son was trying to use some of his dental benefits before the end of the year. Dr. Avason is pathetic and spiteful doing my son this way due to my deciding not to return to his practice after being a patient for several years. Due to his poor work on a tooth along with his arrogance and disrespectful manner speaking to me. Dr. Avason, how about you send my son $50 for you missing your appt which was scheduled weeks in advance? Or be man enough to admit the little stunt was out of pure spite? You're a sad excuse of a human being. I wouldn't recommend anyone to this practice unless you're ok with shoddy treatment by the dentist. Zero excuse for being such a jerk to someone who took time off work after scheduling well in advance.

Years of Avoidable Harm--Tooth Loss, Jaw Injury, and Dismissive Care…read more This office's pattern of poor communication and high-pressure tactics has lessened the quality of my life as well as cost me thousands of dollars for visits and night guards. In late October/early November 2019, I had an apicoectomy on tooth #9 with John D. Wells, DDS at 16600 Birkdale Commons Parkway, Huntersville, NC 28078. I followed all aftercare to the letter, rinsing faithfully with the prescribed cleanser. After the first procedure, I started feeling pain and discomfort in the tooth area after drinking cool water, so I contacted the office right away. Dr. Wells had me come back for him to take a look. He then determined he needed to redo the apicoectomy. Afterward, I asked what the problem was, and he explained that the dissolvable sutures from the initial surgery hadn't dissolved, so he removed them manually. He assured me healing was on track, but by early 2020, persistent infection forced me to need an extraction and an implant, which was both costly and heartbreaking, especially at my age for a front tooth. I was 80 years old going through all of this. I was never told about the threat of infection, and only learned later that undissolved sutures can trap bacteria and lead to failures like this; and that dentists should proactively remove them themselves to avoid such risks. Had I known, I might have pushed for that upfront or chosen differently--but trusting the process, I returned to the same practice in 2022 for a root canal on tooth #8. That's when things worsened dramatically. During packing placement, the assistant demanded I open my mouth much wider to keep it dry, using scare tactics: she warned that if I didn't, "it would have to be redone." Again, I am an older patient, and it was very clear this assistant dd not care about me as a patient, and had no interest in a reasonable bedside manner. Fresh off the 2019 trauma, I felt pressured and complied to open as wide as possible, despite visible distress in my eyes, as she took her time. The strain immediately triggered pain and discomfort, and I was soon diagnosed with a displaced TMJ disc--causing relentless muscle spasms, a sensation like my jaw is off its hinge, difficulty speaking, and chronic agony requiring therapy and meds. After contacting Dr. Wells numerous times with my distress and concerns, he dismissed them outright, claiming the assistant "didn't force my mouth open or threaten me with a gun." No empathy, no accountability--just deflection. As I said before, this office's pattern of poor communication (e.g., not warning about dissolvable suture risks) and high-pressure tactics has lessened the quality of my life as well as cost me thousands of dollars for visits and night guards. The initial staff seemed friendly, but the care felt reactive at best. If you're reading this, ask upfront about materials and removal plans, get consents in writing, and trust your instincts--if something feels off, walk away. I wish I'd switched endodontists sooner; now I see one who actually listens. Proceed with extreme caution here.

I just had my second root canal here in five years. It was no big deal…read more People think root canals are a big deal, but that's due to old technology. Other than the needle being stuck into my gums at the beginning to numb the pain, this was 100% painless. Same as five years ago. I also learned that flossing is 10x more important than brushing your teeth. Brushing only gets the surfaces and gums. Flossing gets rid of the plaque that leads to bacteria and infection. Excess plaque has also been linked to Alzheimer's and heart disease. Great info, friendliness, and overall customer service here. Or you can call it bedside manner. Whatever you want to call it, Dr. Wells and his staff are highly recommended if you're seeking an endodontist.
