Mothers Day Surprise!…read more We wanted to take the Mothers somewhere nice and out of town and had seen The Garden Kitchen had been visited by a number of our friends and family on Facebook, all giving great reviews and I can see why! We arrived for final service at 6pm and as you can imagine it was very busy on Mothers Day. The maître d' came straight over to us to let us know how long it would be until we were seated and continuously gave us progress updates. Whilst waiting we perused the small shop of local produce, had a drink and soaked up our surroundings. The Tea Room is a new addition to Holden Clough Nursery being built in the last few years, but looks like it should have always been there! It is beautiful and sympathetically designed to its surroundings. So, the food....WOW! I'd seen pictures but when our Afternoon Tea arrived on a mini picnic bench I felt like clapping!! (In fact, I think I did!!) Such a great idea and adds a little bit of originality and quirkiness to your experience. Everything on my picnic bench was delicious. The Mushroom soup was silky, creamy and full of flavour. The mini Roast Beef Dinner served in an individual yorkshire pudding was beautiful and of course came with a little jug of gravy and beef was tender and pink. The scone was fresh and light with jam that had just the right sweetness and fruit mix. My other main highlight was the Rocky Road, I'm not usually a fan because its too rich and sweet but O-M-G this was amazing. I still find myself thinking about it now two days on. The chocolate melts in your mouth to find small nuggets of biscuit and mini marshmallows.....all washed down with a great cup of coffee. John & Kate who own and run The Garden Kitchen have done a fanstastic job transforming Holden Clough Nursery over the last few years. The service, quality of food and surroundings are 10/10. We will be coming back during the day to visit the nursery (and no doubt the Garden Kitchen too). Thank you for a fantastic evening...and the Mums loved it!! : )

I went with my mum, sister and partner for the Valentine's afternoon tea, it was great it was so different from traditional afternoon tea you got soup in a tea cup, two open top sandwiches and a mini quiche which was a nice change from just sandwiches. The cakes you got was a scone. A mini red velvet cake, a heart biscuit, marshmallows with chocolate, profiterole with white chocolate and a mini love potion in a glass boot. We got a glass of pink proseco it was £19.99 each which is a little expensive for the place as its a tree nursery but they do a different theme for different seasons so it's well worth a visit. I would defiantly go

The second thing is the cheerful decor, with string lights dotted around the staircase and windows and plenty of quirky lived-in comfortable chairs, Mediterranean colour schemes and some lovely, slightly girly art on the walls. Then, considering just how nice it is to be there, how well you're being treated and how tasty and superbly fresh the food is, there's the price. That's a very nice little surprise. And little it is indeed. With soups at £2.95 you really, genuinely can't go wrong, especially when they're as delicious as this. And are you shocked that a good portion of the mains are under a fiver too? This place has a rustic café feel, with club and ciabatta sandwiches, fish cakes, chips, and plenty for the kids with omelettes and chicken. It's family-run and they have a knack for tending to kids, plus everything you see is pretty much made by one guy and one guy only. And no corners are cut; nothing's scrimped on. Everything from the pasta in the lasagne to the chips on the side are made fresh from scratch. Little twists in classic dishes really make a difference and the desserts are to die for, with the bread and butter pudding made with brioche, plump sultanas, cream and eggs a particular favourite. Plus if you're seeking strong coffee this is definitely the place to come, it's excellent.

This is a place that does hearty, down to earth café grub such as fried breakfasts, bacon or sausage toasties or 'mega thick toast' - anybody who loves doorstop toast as much as I do has my blessing. Plus, they throw in hash browns with the veggie breakfast. Do you know how much I love hash browns? It's one of the few reasons I miss working at an office in Spinningfields in Manchester, the cafeteria did lovely crisp hash browns. Their gourmet sandwiches at a mere £2.75-£3.75 have some exceptionally tempting fillings such as lamb and mint, hoi sin duck, That green chicken and the like, and there are some super hot options for paninis and toasties like roast beef with onion and tomato, sausage with fried onions and tuna melt. I'll be honest, there ain't a lot of options for the diehard veggies amongst you, as these bad boys only do a cheese, onion and tomato melt and it is a simple little place so despite the gourmet fillings you're unlikely to come across any Mediterranean roast vegetables and pesto in your Panini. The slow-baked spuds are another great option for a quick lunch but if you're in the market for something heartier you might want to take a look at the mains, as they do fish and chips, some burgers and cottage pie and the quintessential bowl of Scouse. Puds are as comforting and cholesterol sky-rocketing as you can imagine and they do offer the obligatory frothy coffee and even some frappes. A simple menu with a modern twist - perfect if you're in the mood for some melancholy-busting home cooking. The prices and service are the cherry on top of the Chantilly cream.

They do a damn fine home-made scouse for £3.95 (extra beetroot please!) which in my book is a pretty cheap, if not slightly more homely scran than the surroundings would evoke. No half-measures, a growing girl needs a wholesome meal, even (possibly especially) in Cavern Walks! Ooh, and they do a six item brekkie for £2.95 so if you fancy some cheap, tasty filling food, in that sheek 60s setting, (odd combo but it kinda works!) then take a trip to Chantilly Lounge, via the boutiques of course!

If you like cakes, cheesecakes, desserts or quiches this place is an absolute must! Dafna specialises in producing quality cakes, all made using non-commercial recipes, and utilising domestic kitchen equipment. There is a huge range of cheesecakes, the most popular product, available in ten different flavours - I didn't even know it was possible to do that! Honestly, I was like a kid in a candy shop... I think it's practically witchcraft! Alongside the magical cheesecakes, Dafna sells a range of dietary specific foods such as wheat-free and dairy-free cakes. There is also vegetarian meals and Belgian chocolates on offer. The prices are definitely higher than what you would find in a supermarket or grocery store but the quality of the food is absolutely incomparable! Quiches come at around £7 and cakes are around £10 on average, and the famous cheesecakes about £9 for a large.

They prefer you make an appointment, mostly so they have a table big enough for all of your goodies (should you choose to have the proper afternoon tea, which includes lots of different items). We arrived on Friday for our reservation at 1 pm and there were two or three other groups there. The place is charming, with that homemade feel. They offer several options for afternoon tea, ranging from about £5 for a cake/scone and tea, to around £15 for the finger foods and lunch options. I opted for the former and had a scone with grapes (they were out of plain scones) and lemon ginger tea. My wife had the same scone with chamomile. We were both very impressed with the quality of the food and the lovely service we were given. They have more than just tea. They make proper cakes and serve breakfast and lunch, as well as offer unique specials. This is place is a must try!
