The owner is somewhat eccentric, telling many a tale about his life and the history of the local area but it all adds to the charm of the shop, which stands out amongst the other local jewellers (of which there are quite a few). Despite his eccentricity, he is still very knowledgeable and has given me great assistance and advice on many visits. I have been there on a few occasions for watch repairs, as well as browsing their products, and have found their service to be remarkably prompt, usually repairing my items in a couple of hours if they have time. The other members of staff there are always polite, friendly and ready to assist at all times as well, meaning going to A J Rogers is always a pleasant experience, whether you buy anything or not.

I had a bad feeling as I entered the shop and wish I had taken note of my obvious correct intuition. I paid £29 for two small repairs to a gold necklace and a gold bracelet. I picked them up after more than 10 days of the jewellers having them - getting no confirmation that they were ready (i had to ring them) and then, after wearing them for no more than 5 hours, the bracelet dropped off my wrist (luckily I was indoors) and i couldn't believe that it had broke. I immediately felt wary about my necklace and as i undone the clasp, that broke too. I rang the shop and told them and they said to bring the items in, they would look at them and make 'their' appropriate verdict on what to do. I said I wanted a refund. I returned to the shop and the older man was less than apologetic or understanding and said I would have to leave the items with them and they would make their decision. I had to demand they deal with me there and then and make a refund. I was told i would have to wait as they were in the middle of another job that could not wait. I ensured they gave me receipts for leaving the items in their care. I would not leave the shop. I heard laughter from behind the scenes as they both disappeared. The younger man came forth and told me he would have to take the gold bolt clasp off that they had repaired... i asked if my original would be put back on - he replied 'you'll get one similar', I was unhappy about this, to which he replied, 'the world doesn't stop for you to get what you want'. Disgraceful trading. Avoid this shop.

The shop is filled with cards, postcards, jewellery, wrapping paper, stationary, lighting, novelties, books, artwork, watches, bags, clothes, toys, ceramics, cosmetics and much much more. The shop is cluttered with hundreds of different items but at the same time it is tidy, clean and well organised. Whenever I have to buy a present or a card this is my first stop. There are gifts suitable for people of all ages and appropriate for all occasions. There is a huge range of cards available for all occasions. From the cute handmade cards to give to your mum, to the hilariously offence cards to give to friends, there is something here for everyone. My favourite part of the shop is the jewellery cabinets by the windows. The stock in here is changed and updated regularly and there is always something in the cabinets that catches my eye when I feel like treating myself to something sparkly.

From jokey Jesus statues to gorgeous mirror compacts, beautifully delicate jewellery and quirky cookie jars, this shop has it all. Similar to Utility in town, this has a more homey feel about it, and the staff are very nice. The only problem I found is that because it is so small I was scared to turn around in case I knocked something over and had to pay for it. Prices range from inexpensive to a raised eyebrow, as, for example, the compact mirror I was gushing overturned out to be £8. For a bit of plastic? I gasped. Yes, we all know I'm a miser. However, there are some truly hilarious bits and bobs in here, and it is hard not to buy anything. I especially loved the Carry on Camping plates that were on display in the window - imagine serving dinner on them and seeing Babs pertly staring at you...

Iced gem rings? Yep. Party ring earrings? Yep. Awesome. The vintage brooches are beautiful, they have an assortment of styles and they have big detailed ones for around £8. My favourite items in the whole shop, which is a really difficult call to make, are the pocket watch necklaces. They have an array of fronts and little gold vintage watches too, all around the £20 mark. With a kitsch range of bags, scarves, rings and all sorts (including the Liquorice kind) come to Millie's for a fun twist on vintage shopping.

The shop is about half and half of vintage/handmade. The shop owner told me that a lot of her vintage items come from America, and she has only recently returned from a buying trip in New York (June 2010), so you might want to check out her shop as soon as possible before all the good stuff is bought up! I saw a lot of really cool necklaces and pendants at great prices (most between £4 and £6), as well as really snazzy broaches, earrings, handbags, and some cute kawaii style items and some 60's/hippy type stuff. It's definitely worth a poke around, especially if you are already heading to Grand Central, or you're in need of a vintage shopping spree. Just let me know when you're going cuz I wanna go with you and keep you from buying all the stuff I want for myself!
