I'm from Chicago and my wife is from the East coast. Before my first trip to Maine, she boldly claimed these were the best hot dogs in the world. I laughed her off sheepishly. Boy did I eat my words. On a suggestion from a great guy at the Elks, who knew we were from out of town, suggested Wasses as a must stop. We tried on afternoon and the line was so long, we passed. We tried again the next day and it was perfect. What made the stop even better than the great food and outstanding/friendly service, are the customer's. The lady at the front of the line, left an extra $$'s to pay the order of the guy behind her. How nice is that. You just don't see that anymore. Couldn't miss trying this famous hot dog stand when I was in Rockland, and I wasn't disappointed! Prepare to wait in line--it's clear that both locals and visitors are in the know--but it moves quickly and when you get your dogs you'll be glad you did. I went for their classic kraut dog, which also had relish and mustard and some onions; briny and pickly deliciousness. Also a chili cheese dog, because by the time I got to the head of the line I'd seen a few go past me and couldn't resist. The chili had a nice little zing to it, which was great. We almost always stop by the Belfast Wasses but have eaten at the Rockland store, also. They both equally satisfy our hot dog craving! The Belfast store is in the Belfast Reny's parking lot and is both walk-up and drive-through. Plenty of parking and a few tables with umbrellas. There has always been an attendant at each side of the building, so the order is ready in a hurry. Friendliness is a common factor at both stores making you feel welcome and your business appreciated. We prefer the kraut dogs but have tried chili dogs. The buns are always fresh, the dogs grilled just right. As expected during these uneasy times, the prices just went up a little, but not enough to deter us! Excellent hot dog and fries stand. Easy to get to, private parking lot, right on the outskirts of downtown. Food is consistently excellent, as is the service, and I never have to wait more than a couple minutes or so in line/after ordering before my food is ready. They are like a well oiled machine here! I was lucky enough to meet Bea when I was there, and she has a hog dog special named after her that will blow your mind! Ask about "The Bea Special" next time you stop by. I absolutely love this place, they have the best cheese fries. I'm not a big fan of hotdogs but I will eat their hotdogs. The service is really quick and the people there are really nice! It is a pretty chill place and it is very peaceful there they have chairs and tables outside that you can sit at if you want and listen to the birds while you eat! i've been there so many times in the past month, I have tried to get cheese fries from anywhere else, but they do not taste the same at all.
