We are beyond grateful to have found Dr. Kafle and her amazing assistant, Patty. After a truly…read moredisappointing experience at a pediatric dentist in Chevy Chase, we sought out three additional opinions for our daughter's dental issue. The moment we visited Dr. Kafle's practice in Silver Spring, MD, we knew we had found the right place. Dr. Kafle was honest, knowledgeable, and professional--and above all, it was clear she genuinely cares about her patients. Patty did an outstanding job helping our young daughter feel at ease both before and during her crown procedure. Dr. Kafle patiently answered all of our questions and went above and beyond to ensure our daughter experienced as little discomfort as possible. Even the front desk staff were incredibly informed and attentive--something we sadly didn't encounter at the Chevy Chase office. Thank you to Dr. Kafle and her wonderful team for turning what could've been a stressful situation into such a positive and reassuring experience!

Please never take your child here. I took my daughter here about a year ago. Her first appointment…read morewas okay I was told nothing but to have her floss more. When her second appointment came around (6 months later) Dr.Kalfe said my daughter had 8 cavities without even doing an x-ray. When I questioned how she could have gotten 8 cavities in 6 months she sold me only two were bad enough to be filled, the others she would continue to "watch" I made an appointment to have them filled and something told me to get a second opinion. My daughter soon went to another dentist that did not see a single cavity that needed to be filled. Just one small one on her baby tooth that would be falling out soon. A year later and still no cavities! I don't know if this was a money grab or if this lady is a bit prejudice but I would never trust her opinion.

There has been decent turnover in her staff recently and insurance can be an issue. Like other reviews say, she speaks really quickly using technical terms. In her unclear technical terms, she referred us to an orthodonist and sent us down a rabbit hole that resulted in days of lost time and ultimately, an overnight non-conclusive sleep study. When I followed-up with her on this, without reviewing any of the medical notes, she immediately referred us to another provider. I take all potentially complicated dental issues to another dental provider and just come here for regular, easy check-ups and cleanings which she is pretty good at and are covered by my insurance. Her location is really convenient.

Dr. Karen clearly had a hard morning but instead of being professional, taking a few mins to recompose herself, she took it out on our family decides she wasn't going to do it because she was running behind. We drove 45 mins to see her. Her energy was rude , like she could care less about what I was asking or my daughter. Now we are stuck with tooth pain going out of the country. We could have gone somewhere else. This was a very bad experience

A Truly Exceptional Experience with Dr. Shin…read more As a nurse with 17 years of experience in procedures and sedation, I've seen my fair share of medical scenarios, but Dr. Shin stands out as one of the best examples of what healthcare should be. My 22-month-old son had a traumatic fall that caused damage to his upper front teeth. Two local dentists recommended pulling the three remaining teeth out immediately, and were dismissive of the need for X-rays, insisting that a child of his age would never sit still for an X-ray and that delaying the extractions could harm his permanent teeth. The plan was to restrain him, inject lidocaine (which I know from personal experience is always painful), and pull the teeth out. I wasn't comfortable with that approach. As a nurse who works with children, I've seen how painful procedures can create lasting fear of medical professionals, and I didn't want that for my son. After exhausting other options, I found Dr. Shin and her team. From the moment we walked into her office, Dr. Shin's approach was a breath of fresh air. She immediately engaged with my son, offering toys and creating a welcoming, trust-filled environment. Dr. Shin suggested taking an X-ray, which other offices had told me wasn't possible with a toddler. It showed that while there was a small chance the teeth would need to come out later if future X-rays show a developing infection, it wasn't urgent, and pulling all of them right away wasn't necessary. I was relieved to hear there was time to consider our options. Dr. Shin explained that one tooth did, in fact, need to be removed soon. She laid out two options for us: The first option involved general anesthesia with an anesthesiologist, who comes to the office once a month. However, as a nurse who starts IVs in children, I know how traumatic receiving an IV can be for a child. The second option, which we chose, was a thoughtful and humane approach. Dr. Shin suggested giving my son a weight-based dose of midazolam, a mild sedative that made him relaxed and sleepy. This allowed him to accept nitrous oxide (laughing gas) with ease, further helping him relax. To minimize pain, she applied a topical numbing agent to his gums before any lidocaine was injected--a step no other office had considered. Thanks to this careful, methodical approach, my son remained calm and comfortable throughout the entire visit. There were no tears, and I'm pretty sure (especially since he could watch his favorite show on the ceiling from the procedural chair), he didn't even realize the tooth had been pulled! Dr. Shin's compassion, skill, and dedication to providing the least traumatic experience possible for children are unparalleled. She took the time to ensure my son's experience was as positive as it could be--focusing not just on the procedure but on his emotional and physical comfort. As a nurse who works with children undergoing medical procedures, I can tell you that it takes a special person to balance decisiveness with gentleness, and to be both quick and patient when necessary. Dr. Shin does all of that, and more. I can't recommend her highly enough. She truly exemplifies the best of what pediatric dentistry can be.
