We've been going here for 4 years and she is good at simple, routine check-ups and cleanings if you are in-network with her and don't mind a 15-20 minute wait time. There has been decent turnover in her staff recently and insurance can be an issue. Like other reviews say, she speaks really quickly using technical terms. In her unclear technical terms, she referred us to an orthodonist and sent us down a rabbit hole that resulted in days of lost time and ultimately, an overnight non-conclusive sleep study. When I followed-up with her on this, without reviewing any of the medical notes, she immediately referred us to another provider. I take all potentially complicated dental issues to another dental provider and just come here for regular, easy check-ups and cleanings which she is pretty good at and are covered by my insurance. We went in for an emergency cavity for my Daughter. I had called and made the appt 2-3 weeks prior, since we were going out of the country for several weeks and didn't want to be stuck in another country with tooth pain and no way to manage it. Dr. Karen clearly had a hard morning but instead of being professional, taking a few mins to recompose herself, she took it out on our family decides she wasn't going to do it because she was running behind. Dr. Karen is absolutely amazing! We've been taking our two kiddos (ages 5&8) for almost 4 years. Dr. Karen is especially kind, sensitive, patient, and really worked to build a report with our kids. One of our kiddos is on the autism spectrum and her approach has meant the world to our family and has the best impact on our kiddos dental health. He has very minimal dental anxiety now and Dr. Karen always takes the time to explain treatments, etc. Hygienist Laurie is equally as amazing. She is so patient, kind, and knows just how to get the kiddos to corporate without them even realizing it. Also, over the years, the front office staff has always been great with providing estimates and verifying benefits. This was especially helpful when we fell out of network with the office. Even then, we knew exactly what we were walking into which was much appreciated . We even switched our dental insurance to be back in network because we knew the kiddos would never get the level of care they get here anywhere else. read more

Dr. Karen did such a great job handling my pre-schooler's filling! She explained everything that would happen with the tools, and was very distracting and engaging. The staff are very kind and the office is beautiful and amazingly kid-friendly. BUT - make sure if you are out of network that you first get approval from your insurance for any procedures. When we learned that they were no longer in network we decided to keep going there and I was given estimates of how much insurance would likely pay and they were 100% wrong. I have paid almost $2,000 out of pocket over the past year for cavities my son has which are still being treated because they did stop-gap measures and then weren't able to get him to cooperate with light sedation. Also like other posters have shared, while Dr. Benitez is very friendly, she speaks really fast and uses technical language that makes it very hard to understand treatment options. She could also do more explanation to the children themselves calmly what she is doing. We love Dr.Benitez. She's so good with my daughter. We took her in for her 2.5 year checkup and they were able to do a cleaning on her. She has a great manner with the kids to make it seem fun. My daughter wanted to go to the dentist again the next day! The office is super cute with a play nook in the front. The rooms have screens above the chairs and toys on the walls. Highly, enthusiastically recommend! We had an unbelievably positive first dentist visit here for my toddler. My son is in a shy and stubborn phase, where he is wary of strangers and anything new - I expected we would not be able to get him to even open his mouth. But Chevy Chase Pediatric Dentistry is masterful at what they do. The decor feels more like an ice cream shop or toy store than a dentist office; my son was immediately put at ease. Dr. Bianca and every staff member there was super warm and friendly. To my great surprise my toddler listened to everything Dr. Bianca said and the visit went smoothly. Dr. Bianca was thorough and took time to answer all my questions. There are also clever touches like tv screens on the ceiling playing kid's movies, but we barely even needed it. Fortunately, CCPD is in my insurance network; I was surprised to learn that some popular pediatric dentists in the area don't accept insurance. Chevy Chase Pediatric Dentistry is AMAZING!! My son just had his first dental appointment and cleaning. He is 3 and I was super nervous that he would be scared and wouldn't open his mouth, let alone get his cleaning. All credit goes to the Staff and process. They showed him the tools, let him choose his toothpaste flavor, let him feel how gentle the brush they were going to use on him and the noises it makes so he wouldn't be scared. They made sure to make him feel 1000% comfortable, he did really well!! The experience was so pleasant he is not afraid of the dentist! As a bonus he got to choose a movie to watch! CCPD has created a truly kid friendly environment that makes going to the dentist a pleasant experience. First of all, adorable office. Looks like a beach house with amazing wooden toys to entertain the kids and make the experience pleasant and less scary. We had a difficult experience with Dr. Benitez. We left the consultation feeling both shamed and entirely overwhelmed as Dr. Benitez had covered 4 treatment options in a rapidfire succession, all while projecting unwarranted oral hygiene criticisms. On treatment day, it was clear Dr. Benitez was having a challenging day, as she said unkind things to her assistants about other patients being seen while our child sat in the chair. We let the Dr. know that our child has anxiety struggles beforehand, to which she answered, "Do you think I'd be a pediatric dentist if I didn't know what I was doing?" The treatment itself was awful, as the Dr. ignored our child's pleas of "I can't breathe," "I need to spit," etc. I held my child's hand and acknowledged their discomfort at the moment, since, as their loving parent, I knew that failure to acknowledge their cries could trigger their "trapped" anxiety into full-blown panic. Ultimately, after the Dr. requested that I leave due to "causing my child to panic" from sensory overstimulation, my child panicked, she cut the treatment short, and had the audacity to berate me for causing their panic! ..."In my 15 years of dentistry this has happened 5 or 6 times!"... yeah, unsolicited parent shaming is a big no for me. My children have been to a number of different pediatric dentists. I think Chevy Chase Pediatric Dentistry is the best one overall I've ever been to. My 6-year-old son would certainly agree after two visits so far. He really likes going to see Dr. Karen Benitez and her wonderful staff. I like pediatric dentists and their approach to the child, and Karen and her staff just make him feel so special and included in everything he's had done. He is very comfortable around them, and they call him a very good, cheerful boy, but I think also he is very polite to them and on some of his best behavior there. The entire interior of the office is wonderfully designed for the child, from the waiting area which has a lot of interesting activities including a play area featuring a modern kitchen play set, with educational video games, a TV showing up-to-date kid friendly movies or shows, and a unique slab of wood mounted on the wall that has domino blocks that can be knocked down and then readjusted because they're connected to the wood, which helps keep the set together. The whole place is serene and bright with a wonderful color scheme throughout and all of the furniture looks like it's designed with the child in mind. There is some considerable construction going on around 8401 Connecticut Avenue, but it seems to be going along just fine. One of the other good things about this location is because finding parking can be a bit challenging, you can park right there in the garage, and it's free for the first hour. Our appointments so far there have been efficient and we've never been there more than an hour in this very pleasant place. My son loves the little goodies bag he gets (I also love always getting a new toothbrush/toothpaste and dental floss every time I go to the dentist). Karen and her staff explain everything before and while they're doing it, in ways the child can understand, and I can see it really puts him as ease and probably helps eliminate first-timer anxieties. When my son is in no hurry to leave the office, I know Karen and her staff are doing a fine job. I recommend this office for your kids, I'm sure they'll like Karen and her staff very much. read more

She loves everything about the place and Dr. Karen Benitez and her assistant Lauren are just so warm and friendly. The iPad entertainment room, selection of little gifts and stickers surely added to the joy. Even the floss have characters and all pastes used come in many flavors! Added bonus was she was able to watch TV while getting her teeth cleaned. They are open after-school and on Saturday too. We decided to go to this dentist, because of the good reviews and because our son speaks Spanish and doctor Benitez speaks Spanish as well. Our appointment was for 11:30 am, we arrived at 11:20 am. After 1 hour and 30 minutes, we decided to leave. Our 2 years old was hungry and uncomfortable. When we were leaving, the doctor came out of the office and said that she would see our son. We rushed into the office, I put my son on my legs facing me and pushed him back, so the doctor could proceed with the cleaning. The whole process was traumatizing for our son and for us after 1 hour and 30 minutes of waiting. There wasn't time for introductions or for explanations about what was the first visit about. Also, I had time to ask a couple of questions to the doctor, this was an unpleasant experience. The doctor explained to us that she had some emergencies, but we think they should plan ahead for these kind of "emergencies" We will not return to the office. This kind of experiences leaved a mark in our lives. This was the first time my son was going to the dentist. He will be traumatized for the rest of his life. While the front desk staff was courteous and helpful, I was appalled at Dr. Benitez's lack of professionalism and would never go back. While reviewing my child's xrays she began complaining to her assistant that she will stop providing certain services because it's too expensive for her and affects her bottom line. After realizing the awkwardness of me hearing her vent about her business profitability she turns to me and in what appeared an effort to engage in small talk, she went off an a long rant about kids fashion and how difficult it is to buy nice kids clothes in the US. On and on. When she finally finishes venting she says we're all done. When I ask her about a dental issue she typed into my child's chart she says "Ohh, do you mind if we talk about it at the next visit, today is kind of crazy." After wasting my time talking endlessly about superficial things, she could not be bothered to respond to a question as a dental professional. It truly is a shame because she appeared very likeable on her website video and I live very close and had high hopes based on other reviews. My daughter just went for her follow up but this time we needed to get an X-ray. Her staff was AMAZING from the front desk to cleaning to getting the X-ray. I can't say enough good things especially when getting the xrays done. My daughter initially cried when she saw the machine but after the tech made it fun my daughter was able to do the xrays with no tears. I took my three year old daughter to her first appointment with Dr. Benitez. She came recommended and still managed to exceed my expectations. She is very knowledgeable and personable and is GREAT with children. She made my daughter feel extremely comfortable and excited to be at the dentist! Dr. Karen and her staff are amazing! They are all just great with my 3 year-old, putting him at ease. Compared to another pediatric dentist we used to see, Dr. Karen is much more hands-on, even putting on a lead gown herself and sitting next to my child while taking some x-rays of his teeth. I really appreciated that. As a nurse anesthetist I was nervous about trusting anyone to sedate my son. Coincidentally, an anesthesiologist I work with has worked with Dr. Karen in the past and told me how great she is. That helped put my mind at ease and by the time we had our initial consultation with Dr. Karen, I had full confidence that my son was in good hands. Dr. Karen was able to restore two cavities and reshape my son's overlapping teeth in two short visits using just mild oral sedation and nitrous, when another dentist had told me that 2-3 hours of work would need to be done in an operating room under general anesthesia. Great with special needs kids! My 6 year old son with ADHD and Autism had a filling (put in by a different dentist) come out. Dr. Benitez had ninja-like reflexes when working on my son, who does not sit still. My son repeatedly tried to put his hands in his mouth while the work was being done and Dr. Benitez and her assistant kept their cool. They were able to think of silly things to say to distract and calm him down. I have four kids, and we have been to multiple pediatric dentists over the last 13 years. As a dad, there are three things I worry about with the dentist. 1) Will the dentist do good work? 2) Will they do only the work that needs to be done? and 3) Will my kids like the dentist and be inspired to have clean teeth?
