They have a nicely decorated office with gifts and swag that the kids enjoy but our experiences with them have been otherwise mixed and we use primarily for convenience since we live close by. Like many dentists in the area, they act friendly but also love to upsell (similar experience to the other review about use of novocaine as an example) and you need to use your own judgment as to what works best for your child (or ask AI what a dentist would really do if not motivated to cover the high overhead cost of an office in Bethesda). They completely "forgot" to send us a quote for sealants and I walked in to learn that instead of 4 sealants we would be getting a total of 12 over time. That is at minimum poor relationship management and sales operations, and at worst counting on families in a high cost of living area to just stomach whatever bill is crammed down their throat. Bought my 3 year old for her 6 month follow-up and we continue to love it !! The hygenists (especially Liz whom we had today) are so kid friendly and efficient, and Dr. Shin is so sweet and knowledgeable as well. She gave my daughter a big hug after my daughter stopped sucking her thumb! The office layout is very kid friendly with bright lights and an aquarium in the lobby to take away the fear of the dentist, and the exam rooms are colorful with toys and healthy educational posters all around. The online appointment process is seamless and the front staff is great with reminders and rescheduling. There's also a little arcade for games and treats after each appointment! A Truly Exceptional Experience with Dr. Shin As a nurse with 17 years of experience in procedures and sedation, I've seen my fair share of medical scenarios, but Dr. Shin stands out as one of the best examples of what healthcare should be. My 22-month-old son had a traumatic fall that caused damage to his upper front teeth. Two local dentists recommended pulling the three remaining teeth out immediately, and were dismissive of the need for X-rays, insisting that a child of his age would never sit still for an X-ray and that delaying the extractions could harm his permanent teeth. The plan was to restrain him, inject lidocaine (which I know from personal experience is always painful), and pull the teeth out. I wasn't comfortable with that approach. As a nurse who works with children, I've seen how painful procedures can create lasting fear of medical professionals, and I didn't want that for my son. After exhausting other options, I found Dr. Shin and her team. From the moment we walked into her office, Dr. Shin's approach was a breath of fresh air. She immediately engaged with my son, offering toys and creating a welcoming, trust-filled environment. Dr. Shin suggested taking an X-ray, which other offices had told me wasn't possible with a toddler. It showed that while there was a small chance the teeth would need to come out later if future X-rays show a developing infection, it wasn't urgent, and pulling all of them right away wasn't necessary. I was relieved to hear there was time to consider our options. Dr. Shin explained that one tooth did, in fact, need to be removed soon. She laid out two options for us: The first option involved general anesthesia with an anesthesiologist, who comes to the office once a month. However, as a nurse who starts IVs in children, I know how traumatic receiving an IV can be for a child. The second option, which we chose, was a thoughtful and humane approach. Dr. Shin suggested giving my son a weight-based dose of midazolam, a mild sedative that made him relaxed and sleepy. This allowed him to accept nitrous oxide (laughing gas) with ease, further helping him relax. To minimize pain, she applied a topical numbing agent to his gums before any lidocaine was injected--a step no other office had considered. Thanks to this careful, methodical approach, my son remained calm and comfortable throughout the entire visit. There were no tears, and I'm pretty sure (especially since he could watch his favorite show on the ceiling from the procedural chair), he didn't even realize the tooth had been pulled! Dr. Shin's compassion, skill, and dedication to providing the least traumatic experience possible for children are unparalleled. She took the time to ensure my son's experience was as positive as it could be--focusing not just on the procedure but on his emotional and physical comfort. First I want to start off by thanking Dr.Shin and her amazing staff from start to finish . I was nervous about finding a good dentist and her first dentist for my 7 year old daughter. Upon receiving a list of in network providers from my insurance , this office was second on the list while I researched each one. After looking them up, I needed to look no further. What caught my eye was their cute organized and helpful website . It had pictures of the office, staff bios, bookings for appointments, directions to the office and parking, list of shops nearby, all of the awards they have received , and helpful tips on how to talk to your child about the dentist . Booking my first appointment was so easy & the drop down menu was helpful in ensuring that my information was correct. Hannah was wonderful in following up. After making my appointment online Hannah sent me a text to reschedule. I was impressed at the promptness and it was very convenient to text since I was at work rather than having to step out to make a phone call . After my appointment Hannah was helpful in scheduling , I was impressed that they knew which schools were closed for mcps and dcps. Upon arriving to the office everything was so so cute ! The decor was so nicely color coordinated and organized, very well designed, clean and fancy , like out of a magazine! My daughter was so excited she loved all of the kid friendly designs everywhere and had a good time in the waiting room with the aquarium and watching netflix. . So adorable. I liked how the exam rooms were closed off and the appointment was an hour one to one focused solely on her . Maritza the tech was kind , made my daughter feel comfortable since she was nervous , gave a tour , made it all fun and welcoming . Dr.Shin & Maritza did an amazing job at keeping her happy while my daughter cried and was nervous during the exam. Their experience and expertise in working with children shows and they handled every challenge with ease. The perfect touch was the token room! During the appointment my daughter earned a few tokens to get toys and she played with Maritza while I spoke to Dr.Shin in the office. My daughter picked a handful of toys and was so happy! My 3 year old had an appointment with Dr. Shin last Fri (1/13). The online appointment scheduling was seamless and I like that this is an option. I also was able to complete all forms online as a new patient, which was convenient. Once we arrived, the office was aesthetically pleasing. They had a fish tank and my son recognized nemo, dory..lol. There was a pink pug statue; cute. The fact that my son had a smile on his face, excited at looking at the surrounding, were a plus for me. I too was happy that he was happy. The front desk lady, was very nice as well. Sorry I didn't get her name. She had a calm, positive energy that matched the office's vibe (if you're into this). Once we were led into the back room, Maritza gave us a quick tour. SO NICE. Very inviting and definitely appealing to kids. Dr. Shin was very patient with my son. She also gave me clear instructions for me to help with holding baby so she is able to do her job. After everything was done, she had baby chose a toy AND tokens for the vending machines (not sure what they're called) for more toys. Dr. Shin also explained to us about caring for baby's teeth, starting a routine, and instruction about him sucking his thumb. All very clear, no rush, and she answered all our questions. Baby also received a goody bag for good dental hygiene...VERY NICE!!!! I wished I had this growing up...but I am truly glad that my son is off to a great dental start. Overall the staff had a calm, positive demeanor about them. I put weight on this because my son picks up on this. If he is uncomfortable, the environment has much to do about it. Took my 3.5 yo here for a cleaning recently and Dr. Shin and her staff are amazing!! You can tell they really love working with kids. They were enthusiastic and intent on my sure our child had a great experience. But beyond that, Dr. Shin did a thorough exam and cleaning, and she followed that up with a detailed discussion with me about how to care for our little one's teeth at home, and what to expect in terms of tooth loss/development in the coming years. The entire visit lasted about 30 minutes, which is about 25 minutes longer than at our prior dentist. Dr. Shin really took her time, gave us her undivided attention and was incredibly thorough. We did not have a good experience with Dr Shin. Dr Shin gave my daughter Novocain and then told us she would not fill her cavities bc my daughter ask if she was going to give her another shot in her gums. Dr Shin could not handle a cavity filling for my daughter. She then called me a bad mom bc I didn't want her to have nitrous. ( Novocain is what is regularly used for the pain when getting cavities filled) When I told Dr Shin we were going to go to another dentist bc she wouldn't fill my daughters cavities without using nitrous she said "good luck finding a dentist that will take your insurance." Dr Shin was unprofessional and incapable of doing a regular cavity filling on my daughter. read more

Dr. Shin is wonderful and was very reassuring to my 8 year old who gets very nervous at dentists. We can't say enough about how wonderful Dr. Shin and Martiza are - they are both truly excellent.
