We are leaving this practice after just a couple of visits…read more Our first visit was fine - we liked Dr Altman and the quality of the cleaning, X-rays, etc. seemed fine. However, we've been disappointed with the practice since then. Our son had a cavity and we had to wait a month for an appointment to get it filled. And he's now had two adult teeth come in behind his baby teeth, and needs another emergency appointment. But I've called repeatedly and can't even get him on the calendar. The receptionist promises talk to the doctor and call back, and doesn't. She also tells me that, even if we can get squeezed in for an evaluation, the next appointment available for a tooth extraction is not until June - three months from now! Kiddie Cavity Care is the only provider on this side of town who accepts my insurance - so I will going be paying out of pocket to go elsewhere. I am disappointed that this dentist accepted us as patients so recently (just a couple of months ago) when the practice clearly is overbooked and does not have the capacity to accommodate new patients. My neighbor has also just left this practice after being unable to get her kids' cavity filled within the next two months.

GOOD: It's a very sharp practice, with friendly staff,…read morehighly competent doctors, and hi-tech facilities. They have an on-site dental lab where they can make crowns and such. BAD: WAAAAY overpriced. I was quoted $2,200 for a single onlay with no help from insurance apparently. I think it's a premium practice; platinum dentistry at platinum prices.

I'm going to post this review for both District Smiles and Mint Dental, since they're two locations…read moreof the same business and dentists work at both locations. First, the people who work here are really, really nice which is why I had been willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. But their scheduling, business, and billing practices have made it so I never ever want to go back. In July, I went in for a checkup and was told that I needed a crown replacement. The crown didn't hurt and I was preparing for an extended trip and super busy but they assured me that they had a new procedure in which they take off the old crown, scan the tooth, and then 3-D print the permanent crown and install it *all in the same day*. Cool, right? EXCEPT, day of, they....couldn't work the scanner. Not that the scanner was broken (had them confirm this in the aftermath, while trying to figure out what went wrong and who was at fault)--The people that the practice had scheduled to work the procedure could not figure out how to use it--they spent what seemed like hours trying to scan my mouth (this sucked, by the way, and hurt) and produced such a giant file that it wouldn't upload to the 3-D printer. So, after hours of waiting, they slapped on a (badly placed) temp crown, and sent me on my way to come back and do they whole thing again a week later--this time with Dr. Kassem, who might be the only person in the practice who knows how to work the machine. But you know what? Even after all of that, I went back and had a filling done a week later--they were that nice! The filling, and the crown, once it was in, have been fine: this is not a review of the actual dentistry, only how they run the business. I've been burned--badly--by dentist/insurance stuff before, so I made sure that they preauthorized the procedure with my insurance and asked for a guarantee that the quoted and billed price would be the final. I was assured that it was, and assumed my balance was zero. This week, *six months later*, I got--via email, totally without explanation---a random link to a bill for $34. I couldn't even log in to see what it was for (their billing software is pretty janky and doesn't look secure--I thought it was spam at first) so I called them and, very nicely, they told me that insurance had not covered one part of the procedure (which may have been their fault, actually) and very nicely asked me to pay the balance. After all of that, and over $34, I lost it. It may be petty of me, but it's also petty (and possibly unethical) of them, especially since the procedure itself was a nightmare. Why would they wait so long to bill me, without any explanation, over a botched procedure, and renegging on their guarantee of up-front pricing? And then, even after I questioned them about this, why would they double down, especially given that they had been at fault? It felt like a shakedown, honestly. I paid it, but i will never, ever, ever go back again, no matter how nice--$34 this time could be $340 (or hell, $3400) next time, and I'm not taking any chances. So, the actual dentistry is fine (ultimately), the people are great, but practices--in multiple ways--are sloppy enough to give me pause. I need a dental practice I can trust, and this ain't it.

Strange, right? It would be if you haven't met Dr Kuwabara. Lovingly known as Dr K, this man is geneious at what he does and how he does it. The office is warm, filled with natural light, has a mostly open floor plan, and every person who is a part of the staff is welcoming, delightful, and kind. They're so gentle and helpful, it makes you wonder why more people can't be like them. Each hygienist we've had for my daughter's appointments has been prompt, fun, incredibly friendly, and very thorough. They talk my daughter through the process, explain and distract her as necessary, and always playfully give her options for toothpaste flavors and toothbrush colors. They're big on praise that encourages good tooth care, which works really well--my daughter loves brushing her teeth to the point where we have to ask her to reign it in. Then there is the visit with Dr K himself. He makes the kids laugh, he plays little games to get them to count and talk to him, and all the while, he's conducting a perfect exam and including the parent. He's just wonderful, and his Hawaiian shirts and ocean-themed office make the whole experience all the more fun. I cannot recommend this practice enough for children. We've been so incredible pleased, and the fact that my daughter not only doesn't mind going to the dentist but actually looks forward to it speaks volumes about their methods. Not only thorough and knowledgeable, he's also friendly and really puts you at ease with his jovial sense of humor. It was also nice to not have a dentist trying to push lots of extras and services on me that I didn't want - like he evaluated the alignment of my teeth, perceived that I'd had braces in the past and possibly a retainer, and while giving me an honest assessment of how my top teeth are more evenly aligned than my bottom teeth, he didn't make a fuss about trying to convince me to get another retainer (as other dentists have tried to do). Honest, thorough, and not pushy - hard to find all of those qualities in a single dental practitioner these days. Dr. Davoudian did my tooth cleaning himself, and his dental assistant Mickey, who is also lovely and a total riot, did my x-rays. I wish I'd caught the name of the receptionist too, because she was also wonderful, really thorough, personable and helpful, and I'd like to give her proper recognition. But I will next time!
