There is a lot of culture, a striking art museum, Summerfest the largest music festival & a theater district. Miller beer & Harley Davidson have a big presence here. Milwaukee Brewers play baseball & the Bucks baseball, it's also home to Marquette University. There are many independent bookstores & art galleries in the city. The nickname "Cream City" comes from the distinct cream-colored bricks found on many of the city's buildings. Although downtown is very walkable, there is a bus & trolley system. However, the curb's & sidewalks aren't in good shape & need attention. People are friendly & helpful here.

And I haven't been here as often as I probably should have for as close as it is; it's about an hour or hour and a half away so it's an easy day trip. Known for breweries and bratwurst, one or the other of those are on practically every corner. I've not historically been the biggest fan of bratwurst but had a Reuben bratwurst that makes my mouth water thinking about it. I had fun going to some shops with my little one, including a couple children's shops (BlackBear Boutique and Rainbow Booksellers, in particular). Rainbow Booksellers is only open a couple days per week so make sure to prioritize it if you are wanting to go. I'd planned to take my kiddo to the children's museum, but she fell asleep so that will wait for another trip. I think there are at least a couple children's museum-like places here. And in the downtown area there are several music venues; I've only been to Pabst many years ago, and I'd love to visit the High Life Theatre as well. And soon will attend a Brewers game to see the sausage race live and in person!

Which is why the boyfriend and I ended up in the basement barging into some supply room while in search of the county clerk... However, security is pretty much nonexistent, so we managed not to get into any trouble! Properly redirected upstairs, the county clerk is just inside the (front) door. They have a separate little room where they do marriage licenses, so you don't have to stand at the counter. However, they had some difficulty with some of our documents, and given that we had to swear that everything was accurate, it seemed weird that they were trying to enter things that were not, strictly speaking, accurate. Look, guys, not everyone was born in Wisconsin and only has paperwork from Wisconsin! On the plus side, when we picked up the license, they invited our photographers behind the counter to get photos of us checking it over. Scheduling a wedding was super easy, as they have a listing online of which judge to call for which month. The lady in the judge's office was very nice, and even volunteered that the judge's clerks can serve as the witnesses (which we took them up on). We were married in the judge's courtroom, and while the judge had clearly done the ceremony a few (hundred) times before, it was very nice, and using just our first names ensured that there was no mangling of our last names! One of the clerks even accompanied us downstairs to the register of deeds office to file our license, so the paperwork was relatively painless. And everyone told me how beautiful I looked and seemed very happy to have a wedding (clerk taking us downstairs: "We have a wedding!"). So while bureaucracy is bureaucracy, this really wasn't too bad. And hey, getting married by a judge is free (if you don't count all the taxes you've ever paid...)!

There were a lot of kids on the tour and the tour guide did a great job of explaining things for them. He also made a lot of jokes and was very friendly. The marble throughout the building is really pretty and cool to see. It's a lot of stairs but they do also have elevators. The observation deck at the top is definitely worth the climb also and offers a really pretty view of Madison.

The capital building is located in the heart of the city and is a perfect backdrop of any day, no matter the season. While great from the exterior, wandering around inside is way more fun. It is open to the public and free to roam, however you can get guided tours that get you access to the more restricted areas, including the floors. We wandered around for well over an hour and could have spent more time if we had more access. The mezzanine level was the best, as it allowed you to see lots of history as you made the circle indoors, then let you get every angle of Madison and the lake from the outdoor area. Parking is all public and street, so plan accordingly, but if you are staying anywhere in or near downtown, then you have easy access with a quick walk. Overall, the building is gorgeous and the staff were helpful from entry to exit. Lots to see, whether politics or history are your things, it is definitely worth a visit!
