When you go to visit, go up the elevator or take the stairs however you choose but keep going up level after level when you get up of all three levels so you can take the steps all the way up towards the rooftop and walk around the capital and see Madison all the way around for miles.

This was my first time exploring any capitol building, but it was really beautiful! They offer free tours so I joined in on one, and it was very informative. There were a lot of kids on the tour and the tour guide did a great job of explaining things for them. He also made a lot of jokes and was very friendly. The marble throughout the building is really pretty and cool to see. It's a lot of stairs but they do also have elevators. The observation deck at the top is definitely worth the climb also and offers a really pretty view of Madison.

While I do not spend much time in State Capital buildings, I would like to spend more time here, as the Wisconsin State Capital building is absolutely beautiful, a great space to learn about history, marvel at the intricate details of the stonework, look over Madison from the mezzanine level or take in the phenomenal artwork on the rotunda ceilings! The capital building is located in the heart of the city and is a perfect backdrop of any day, no matter the season. While great from the exterior, wandering around inside is way more fun. It is open to the public and free to roam, however you can get guided tours that get you access to the more restricted areas, including the floors. We wandered around for well over an hour and could have spent more time if we had more access. The mezzanine level was the best, as it allowed you to see lots of history as you made the circle indoors, then let you get every angle of Madison and the lake from the outdoor area. Parking is all public and street, so plan accordingly, but if you are staying anywhere in or near downtown, then you have easy access with a quick walk. Overall, the building is gorgeous and the staff were helpful from entry to exit. Lots to see, whether politics or history are your things, it is definitely worth a visit!

**June 2025: Weekday Morning Visit** This State Capitol was very impressive and I'm so glad that I did made room in my trip to do a tour. Guests can enter in one of four entrances and start at the help desk for a free one hour tour. Our guide was super knowledgeable and engaging. We visited six areas of the Capitol: the Rotunda, the Assembly, the Senate, the North Hearing Room, the Governor's Conference Room, and the Supreme Court. She told lots of stories and I learned so much about Wisconsin history. There's also a Museum and an opportunity to get a bird's eye view of the city at the dome. you'll take the elevator up and then take some narrow stairs. I think my friend and I spent allotted 2 hours for the State Capitol which would be sufficient time to take it all in. Overall I thought this was a worthwhile visit! Some Helpful Info! https://legis.wisconsin.gov/about/visit Monday - Friday: 8am - 6pm Weekends and Holidays: 8am - 4pm Free tours are offered daily, Tours start at the information desk -Monday through Saturday at 9:00, 10:00, 11:00 am and 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 pm -Sundays at 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 p.m. A 4:00 p.m

Those who know me, know I'm a history buff. I enjoy museums to include Presidential libraries and even state capitols. And the Wisconsin State Capitol was one of a few I visited on my recent road trip. Start off with parking. Had I know that not far from the steps, you could park for free in the residential areas, I still would have opted to pay for street parking. The weather was a little warm and humid so not having to trek back to the car too far, was nice. I don't remember how much - just know it's metered unless there are/were parking garages I missed. Or lots. It's free to enter and to take the tour. A guide takes you to several chambers and shares history and stories of the capitol as well as members and more. I love how the architects and designers were so thoughtful with how everything was put together. Makes the statement that - we don't build them like we used to - rings so true when you learn about how even the variations of materials were chosen. There's an opportunity to visit the Museum Dome and even wander outside. You have a 360 degree view of the city and you can learn more history about the dome itself. If you enjoy history and knowing different, random things - this needs to be on your list of things to do and see when you're in Madison.

I came to Madison, Wisconsin during the summer of 2024 to attend an engineering conference, and one of the fun things I wanted to experience while visiting the area was to check out the Wisconsin State Capitol building. In addition to being an engineering nerd, I also love architecture and history, and I couldn't resist the opportunity to check out this historical and architectural marvel while I was in the area. I visited the Capitol building several times over a one week period, and I'm really happy that I did. The building is a remarkable display of craftsmanship. The Wisconsin State Capitol houses both chambers of the Wisconsin Legislature along with the Wisconsin Supreme Court and the Office of the Governor. The Capitol is the tallest building in Madison at 284 feet from the ground floor to the top of the dome. This Capitol building is actually the fourth Capitol building built in Wisconsin. Construction of this Capitol began in 1906 and was completed in 1917. While here, over several visits, I walked all around the building multiple times. I also walked all around inside, on every floor and in several of the rooms. In addition, one day I noticed that a Wisconsin State Capitol building employee was providing a group tour, so I followed the tour group to receive a wealth of knowledge and fun facts about this building. By doing this, I was also able to check out some of the most significant rooms in the Capitol that are usually closed-off to the general public. It is an absolutely beautiful building, filled with precise workmanship in every detail. In addition to this review, I encourage you to check out all my pictures and videos taken at this location. If you would also like to access more photos or have a virtual tour, you can access these on the official website at https://tours.wisconsin.gov. Several other details are also available on this site if you're planning a visit and/or if you'd just like to know more about the Capitol building. If you're in the area, I highly encourage you to stop here for a visit.

Madison, Wisconsin, what a gorgeous Capitol and city. I wish we had more time for a tour, but what we saw was just beautiful and awe inspiring. Highly recommend visiting this architectural and artistic treasure. The pictures speak for themselves...

We were visiting & are so glad we prioritized coming to the Capitol for a tour! Stunning architecture, beautiful murals, and panoramic views of the entire city from the observation deck!! Our tour guide was a brilliant historian and I learned a lot! We were there on a Friday and there was a lot of school children on field trips, the staff were generous enough to break up the tours and do a separate one for us adults. Highly recommend!!

I have a thing about capitol buildings. I hope to check out each and every one in each and every state. Thus far, I've seen several state capitol buildings and Wisconsin is one of my faves. From the guarding badgers (you'll have to go inside to see these but they're worth the gander) to the dome reminiscent of the capitol dome in DC, it's beautiful both inside and out. That said, definitely go inside. It's worth the gander. The interior is definitely the star of this state capitol show. I also love that they're open to the public. I'm not sure when they close but I've been here on a Saturday as well as a Sunday and they were opened both times with plenty of folks wandering around taking snaps. During the summer, there's Saturday on the Square which is a pretty epic farmers market that takes place on the tree lined sidewalks surrounding the capitol building. It's one of my favorite farmers markets ever. Get to it!

We had a great time touring this place! The architecture is stunning, the free guided tours for about an hour were very engaging, and this place definitely has a lively ambiance that welcomes you in. We did partake in a guided tour and I learned so much and really enjoyed how engaging our tour guide was. I loved seeing the different art work, carvings, and architecture throughout this place. At the end, I bought a few postcards up front that were so cheap (only 25 cents a postcard; best deal I have ever seen). Definitely recommend checking out this capitol building!

The Wisconsin State Capitol is absolutely beautiful. It was amazing to be able to go on a self guided tour and view the architecture and history of the building. You will be nothing less than impressed while spending time at the State Capitol. Located in the center of the city it's the perfect place to spend a day and easy to find a close restaurant to enjoy a meal at after!

Took my first tour of the Wisconsin State Capitol this week. John was our tour guide and he shared a wealth of information about the building's variety of stone, the artists and the stories about the paintings, the badgers throughout the building and the Wisconsin state seal on all doorknobs. A tour of this beautiful building is a must next time you are in Madison.

A Masterpiece of Architecture and History The Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison is nothing short of breathtaking. From the moment you approach its majestic dome (one of the largest in the world!), you're struck by its timeless beauty. The building seamlessly classical design with intricate details--think marble from across the globe, stunning mosaics, and beautiful murals. Free guided tours offered. Free to visit, and impeccably maintained building.

The staff is friendly, the materials are very accessible and the equipment is easy to use. The building itself is gorgeous, with vaulted, stained glass ceilings and long, old fashioned wooden desks each with small green lamps. Here's how our visit played out... Growing up as a kid, it was always fun to hear my parents' stories from their childhood in La Crosse, WI. My dad has a couple that he really enjoys recounting: one story is about an epic high school football matchup between his school and my mom's (my dad's team won, which may explain his fondness for the story), and a second story is about a lone gunman who robbed a hotel where my dad worked, my dad subsequently chased into a parking lot, and he got shot at in the chase. You can tell that both of these items of family folklore may be tweeked with a bit of exagerration. My siblings and I always wondered, are my dad's memories completely accurate, or are they big fish stories? Yesterday I convinced my parents to join me on a trip to the Historical Society, where they have a vast collection of past Wisconsin newspapers on microfilm. Tucked away in a back room, you can look up La Crosse Tribune newspapers from the 1960s, organized by month in an old school card catalog or on a new school online database. The library has tons of microfilm machines that are available for open use. You retrieve the microfilm yourself from a shelving system, and you're free to start scanning it on a manual-roller or automatic-digital machine. We quickly found newspaper evidence confirming both of my dad's stories, and his reputation for veracity remains intact. He was very pleased with our findings (I think he may have started doubting his own memory). He also got swept up by all the big headlines on the newspapers' coverpages (Vietnam, Nixon, controversies over interstate construction). The library staff was very friendly and willing to help us along during our search process. The entire visit only took us about an hour, and that's pretty quick, demonstrating how organized they've got things. We tracked down exactly what we needed in a short time amidst an enormous volume of materials and with only a vagueidea of when it all had happened. We were able to make digital, emailed copies of the newspapers for free, and we made some paper printouts of the important pages for 25 cents/page. The Wisconsin Historical Society Library is an excellent resource for the state and a great place to check on family folklore. And here's an idea: You could make a scrapbook gift for a parent, comprised of newspaper clippings that confirm their favorite stories or show big events from their childhood.

We've done 3 walking food tours prior to this one and were excited to add it to our list. There were many things we loved about this tour; Stanley's enthusiasm, the beautiful day and great walking weather, the folks we chatted with on the tour and *most* of the food. The tour was extremely slow to get going. We were all very hungry; eating small breakfasts and no morning snacks in anticipation of a heavy food afternoon. The tour began promptly at 12:30. We spent a very long time in the Convention Center talking about Frank Lloyd Wright. And then when we left the history part of the tour continued for an hour. The first tasting of any food did not happen until a little after 1:30. First stop was Merchant, a funky restaurant/bar, where we were served a Small quarter of a cuban sandwich and a tiny arugula salad dressed in vinaigrette. The Cubano was very good but the serving we seriously tiny. Then we lingered waaaay too long (in my opinion) at the Merchant sitting at the table even though everyone had been done for a while. After the merchant we made Lots of little stops to look at landmarks around the capital area. And we did a little walk through of the capital building, which was very beautiful, but my tummy was still rumbling!!!! 2:22 was our second stop at Fromagination Cheese Shop. This was an absolutely adorable shop with oodles of cheese as well as other gormete food stuffs like cookies, pastries, honey, balsamic vinegar, mustard, jams and jellies and other gift stuff . 3 small pieces of cheese and 2 crackers. There were also a few samples around the store for tasting but really it was a very small food sampling. Shortly after that around 2:44 we made it to Ian's Pizza for a half-slice of Mac and cheese pizza. Ehhh. Did not like it. They had some really cool other kinds and just an awesome menu in general. Just was not into the Mac and Cheese slice. Ick Next up was a little after 3:00 and we stopped at Himal Chuli which was a Nepalese eatery for a Mango Lassi. I was disappointed that we did not get to go inside the restaurant. We just grabbed-and-go our drinks and walked to our next stop. At around 3:17 we stopped into State Street Brats where we were served half to a third of a brat and A half pint of Spotted Cow beer from New Glarus Brewery. Good tasting. But again, a very small sample Lastly we walked to UW campus to the student union for a vanilla malt. It was good. Wish we had gotten to try the ice cream. I'm sure they have some great flavors there. The union was amazing however, right on the lake. Lucky students. The tour ran over, ending around 3:45. My husband and I left still feeling kind of hungry which has NEVER happened to us after a food tour. So, we had a fun time but left with mixed feelings about the tour. Not sure how much we will recommend this one to ours friends. Would rather send them down to the zerve.com food tours in Chicago.
