Watauga Humane Society - Our puppy 1 month after getting her

    Watauga Humane Society

After seeing a photo of the cutest puppy ever on the Watauga Humane Society website, we drove up…read morethe very next day to meet her and her remaining female littermates. The shelter staff were extremely friendly and helpful, quickly bringing all 3 puppies to meet us and our friend in a relatively clean visiting room, complete with 2 chairs and a handful of toys. We played for the puppies for a while, and they obviously get 5 stars for playfulness and cuteness. After we had inevitably picked out the little runt we had first seen online, the staff came back and took the other two so we could see how she was alone, then they told us a little bit more about her and her litter's history. We then filled out a little bit of paperwork while our baby Poppy, formerly known as Ganondorf, was taken back to be microchipped and get one final checkup from the vet there. Then, for only $170 (plus a refundable deposit of $100 promising we would spay her when she is old enough), we got to walk out with the sweetest 2 month old puppy, a bag of her food, several toys, a coupon to a pet store in town for even more free food and treats, and the promise of a free spay surgery (on top of getting the $100 deposit back) if we bring her back there and use their surgeon. All in all this was a fantastic monetary value, and of course we are absolutely enamored with our new little buddy. 1 month later, I can say she's been an absolute gem so far. She's relatively well behaved for a puppy, which is probably just genetics and good luck driving her temperament, but she is also brave and very well socialized, despite us not taking her out much since she isn't fully vaccinated against parvo yet. The socialization, I attribute to the Watauga Humane Society, as it is very clear she was raised surrounded by love, and given plenty of care and attention.

Called with concerns about a potentially abandoned pet rat and was brushed off and told to let it…read moredie along with other rude comments. Really earning the "humane" part of the name with that one.

This organization is completely backwards in regulating adoptions. My dog that had been lost for…read moreover a year showed up on their website, and I was completely ecstatic. I thought it was a miracle. When I contacted them they informed me that the dog was already adopted and they gave me some big story to guilt me into not pursuing the matter further. However we made an agreement that I would get my dog if this adoption fell through (I prayed that it would). The adoption did fall through but the organization went ahead and adopted my dog to another family. When I pursued the matter they told me the previous adopter was a horrible fit but this one was much better giving me another sob story to sway my persistence but I would not budge this time because this was my dog and I knew that he would be best in my care. The organization refused to give me my dog back stating that the dog was now the property of the animal shelter and that I had no rights over the dog. It amazes me that with all the animals that need a home this organization went through so much effort to place this dog when it already had a home to go to and a more than willing owner to take responsibility of him. I was treated with complete disrespect by Patricia Beam who I suppose is the head adoption coordinator. She refused to give me any information or contact information for the board member that was apparently making the executive decisions on my case. When my mother kept pressing her for his name and information she was told that the information had to go through her and then she hung up the phone abruptly. I can't believe the treatment we have received from this organization and I cannot believe that my dog has been forever taken away from me because of sheer incompetence and lack of professionalism. I pray that my dog is with a good family; although, I know he belongs with me. This organization will never receive another donation from my friends and family.
