Unless you are from this area, it's basically located north of Bakersfield in the middle of desert "nowhere" close to dairy farms, corn fields and another state prison half an hour away. Make sure you've mapped it out ahead of time before going. North Kern State Prison is located in Delano, California. The facility acts as both a reception center, and a medium to minimum custody facility, as well as a transportation hub for when inmates are transported over a long distance through California. From L.A., you should leave before the sun comes up if you want to make it in time for visitation hours on Saturdays and watch for dense fog if you are coming down through Grapevine on the 99. It's pretty gnarly. The important things to remember if you must come here (and hopefully it won't be as an inmate) is to make sure to check their website and fully read the instructions of the Visiting Rules and Information. You have to be on the approved list before visiting and there are very specific rules to follow while you are there. If you do your homework, visits should be flawless.

Parking is right at the visitor's entrance. (Not like CMF, where you have to park in a muddy field…read morethen trudge over to a surly greeting.) When you enter the visitor center, it is set up like 90% of the Cali prisons, so the toilets are on your right just past the "Wall of Fame" with the warden's photo. Clean bathrooms. Plenty of towels, and an air dryer. Very nice. The blocks are set up quite differently from most prisons. There is A, B, C, and D. You will get lost 10/10, but the cops walking around are very helpful. Even the guy in the gun tower pointed out where we were supposed to be. They do legal visits in person, with a conference table between. I give it four stars because five would have to be something spectacular, like they bring you donuts, but way better than just three. Would visit again.

Then you try to call the prison and you can't speak to a person at all!!! there's no operator no information center and no wellness checks for loved ones! Sgt Sanchez is so unprofessional and sounds highly ignorant and uneducated. I spoke with her regarding my loved one and my concern about them not getting their basic rights and phone calls and toiletries and he hasn't been given any of that and she wasn't kind nor did she help the situation. I work in the field and the fact that they are so unprofessional and arrogant concerns me because those type of people should not work in that field. They do not clean their cells or units before placing another individual in there. Mental health staff even questioned the unsanitary conditions and the Sgt next to her seemed nervous and stated it would get cleaned and it never did. Our loved one had to sleep on the hard cold floor. I pray... that those people running those units and that facility NEVER have to face a situation in which they or their loved ones have to get treated bad.
