There were Native Americans here going back thousands of years but the first European to explore the area was Francisco Garcés around 1776. The city was officially incorporated in 1873. Bakersfield's location at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley and proximity to the Tejon Pass on Interstate 5 between the Greater Los Angeles Area and the San Joaquin Valley, has made the city a regional transportation hub. I only spent a few hours in this pleasant town, between a laundromat and trying to find a hilariously named intersection. I found the city easy to navigate, pleasantly clean and definitely huge. The roads I drove were in mostly good condition. I have a need to come back and spend some time here, perhaps when fuel prices drop again because the GasBuddy price map reports this area as some of the most expensive in the country. I think when people think of the Social Security office then they think of long lines, long waits and unproductive; however, in all the years I have visited this site, I've never felt that way. Service has always been fast. I think it would be faster if you made your appointment, but don't expect to be priority if you grab a number. You must expect a wait time. This location is actually faster than the Bakersfield location, so if you live in Delano and need to visit the Social Security office then just know your wait time will not be as long and remember while you wait.... it could be worse. The facility isn't too hard to find and the parking area is a tight squeeze. Staff is always friendly here and always helpful. You can tell the facility is cleaned regularly; which is always a plus!

I'm a huge historic building lover and the Brower Building is no exception…read more Funded by Celsus Brower and build by contractor CJ Lindgren in 1910 it was built to house the offices of the Standard Oil Producers Department as well as offices for local, retail, medical, real estate, and legal businesses. The USO opened a 25-cot dormitory for visiting servicemen on the third floor in 1943. The main anchor store for quite some time was Wickersham Jewelry Store from 1911 to 1988. I had the pleasure of visiting this building while a friend was working here for a few here's in a rented office. Of course, the parking was tricky until he purchased a parking pass in the 18th street and Eye structure. Inside, you could see remnants of everything old and wonderful. 5 stars for everything historical. But... 2 stars for the care maintenance of the current owners. I realize times can be tough and when I was visiting often it seemed that tenants came and went very frequently. Walls were extremely thin and conversations could easily be heard. Kind of awkward if you're a lawyer or engaging in private matters. There are definitely some charming aspects to this building, but it really could use some TLC.

California Landmark #137…read more Ok. Gordon's Ferry currently get's a bad rap. It's often the site of sketchy goings-ons and a place you likely don't want to see in the dark. But! It's historic! And you have to appreciate a historic landmark! Especially Kern County's first historic landmark So why is this little part so important? Well, think about being alive back in the 1850's and needing to find a way to cross the raging Kern River. Yes, raging. This beastly river used to have a mind of its own before dams, often washing out most of Bakersfield. So how does someone get from one side to the other safely? Well, by ferry of course! Gold rushers coming up from the south often used this ferry as it was one of the safest spots to cross, then oil, then just locals. Eventually, a bridge was constructed further down making the ferry obsolete.
