Great local bookstore with a stellar selection of gifts for the book-lover or the funky yet slightly geeky person in your life. I once did all my last-minute Christmas shopping here and the recipients *still* talk about the gifts that I bought for them from this place! They have a nice selection of pens and their staff has also sold me the pen I use most on a daily basis: the Retro 51 Tornado pen. I love their twice-yearly pen sale. This is a very small bookstore, so don't expect the widest range of literature. Come here for current bestsellers, but not foreign books. Their foreign literature section consisted of... dictionaries. They did, however, have Vogue from about 5 different countries, which was cool. The best part of this store is the large collection of cards and stationery/ small knick knacks and souvenirs. They have some very cute stuff that would be awesome for stocking stuffers or birthday presents. read more

My wonderful man dragged me in here because he saw the sign outside that said "stationary!" and he immediately knew I would want to come in here and blow all my money. So I saw their INCREDIBLE selection of fountain pens! Noodlers, Visconti, Pilot, and more. I asked the lady about whether they had the Visconti flex and she didn't really know, and then this wonderful dude with glasses and a moustache I instantly recognized as my kindred pen loving soul took us over to their flex and soft nib pens - the Pilots (and the Noodlers flex of course.) He patiently showed and allowed us to try each nib in each body of the Pilot Falcon, and the price was 20% off for Father's day, bringing it down to the standard online price, except you have the huge advantage of testing the pens and finding the right fit for you and talking to this awesome dude! This guy knew his stuff, from paper, stationary, pens, nibs, pen weight, he knew exactly what I was looking for and we ended up with a Pilot Falcon in Soft Fine - great call because it writes like an extra fine when I use the tip or back, as he said it would, and never drops too much ink! Thank you Mr. Pen Guy for your sage advice, I am mildly obsessed with my new Falcon! I am sorry I didn't get your name! read more

I love this place! You can find all kinds of knick knacks and treasures, plus you can pick up a good book, stationary, office supplies and invitations. Warwicks has some pretty good book signings. They have had celebrity's and politicians signing books such as, Ozzy Osbourne and in the following weeks Chelsea Handler will be there as well as Karl Rove...yes Karl Rove aka pig face. So happy to have found this place while we were walking around in DTLJ! They have a HUGE selection of greeting cards and some stationery. Lots of "thank you" card sets; I wish they had other card sets and not just "thank you" ones :( One side of the store is devoted to cards/stationery and the other side is a bookstore! I forget how wonderful it is to flip through an actual book versus reading articles online... I especially like that the employees share books they recommend - that definitely helps someone like me who can be very indecisive! read more

You just don't see stores like this much anymore. However, given its long history and constant foot traffic, I'm guessing that Warwick's will be here for quite a long time to come. Just an excellent selection of cards and zillions of gifts. Fancy, and not so fancy pens and pencils. Calendars, notepads, funky watches. Gift wrap, etc etc, you get the point. If you are looking for a present, or just like to try out pens and paper, you can spend some quality time here, and most likely walk out with at least something fun and/or useful. read more

This place is great for books, gifts, and art supplies. They carry great supplies for drawing and painting, and although their selection of materials isn't super large, they carry ALL OF THE RIGHT STUFF. It's well organized and it's such an exciting store to go into because they have everything you're looking for. I always find myself getting excited to go there because you know you're going to find something amazing so you can go create! read more

So I went in here instead of a big chain bookstore to buy a book written by Aimee Bender, a well known author. I also brought a poster for a literary reading series hosted at the university, at which Aimee Bender will be reading. Warwick's had the book, as it's a new, popular one, but they wouldn't let me put up the poster. One of the booksellers said he'd put the poster up in the break room! If it was an advertisement for anything other than a book reading by an author whose book is on their shelves, I would understand. I wanted the community to know about this reading as our reading series rarely has visitors from outside the university, although they are packed with students and faculty. It's not a problem of empty seats but of diversity. Ah well... My favorite bookstores are Skylight Books in Los Feliz and Vroman's Books in Pasadena. Those bookstores aren't merely pit stops for book buying. They are places for book lovers to find out about the larger literary community. I was also disappointed that Warwick's didn't stock older books, only new ones. read more

I was looking all over town for nice mechanical pencil and after giving up at a few other art stores I finally tried Warwick's. I had no idea they had such a large display of nice pens and a handful of nice pencils. They didn't have the architectural drawing mechanical pencils I was hoping to find (but no one else did either), but the girl helping me was very friendly and listened to my needs and made great suggestions and pulled out all the best for me to try out. The set I picked up was from a company called Retro51. I got a Tornado Deluxe carbon fiber rollerball pen and a super fat 1.15mm lead pencil. I can finally write with a smile on my face. :) Still looking for my Ohto Japanese mechanical pencil but will have to probably order online elsewhere. Will be heading back to Warwick's for other things I spotted but didn't have time to grab before they closed. Friendly staff. read more

Helpful associates and a good selection of books keep Warwicks in the average range. They do have difficulty competing with online booksellers (mainly Amazon) and as much as I like browsing bookstores I would still rather pay less for a book (you can call me fickle or whatever). I still make several book purchases here a year though. read more

Drove to Warwick's primarily for the stationary section. The only store in the San Diego area I have found that carries Filofax and Filofax products. The selection is small but well-rounded.I was able to spend my money here rather than Amazon. Good prices too. The book section is on the right. Very nice selection of classics. Next to no fantasy fiction books. The left section is fronted by jewelry and doodads. There is a leather goods and pen section in the back middle. The stationary/office supplies are behind the jewelry. Nice selection of things I have had trouble finding locally. The art supplies are at the very back. Basic selection. Parking in this section of town can be a pain, but the weather is gorgeous so who minds walking a block or two. The staff were very nice without being in your face. They know what they are about with knowledge. Warwick's was worth the 20 minute drive from South Bay. (Hahaha, it's only 20 mins, right?) Prices on everything are comparable to what you would find elsewhere. The only difference is you aren't getting that big corporate discount. These days that ain't so big. read more

Dogs all over the store? I watched a little girl get jumped on and knocked over by a large dog that had been brought to the management's attention not five minutes prior. The management did nothing about this and let the dog remain. At the time of this incident, there were approximately five dogs inside this small store that was packed with shoppers, including a large number of small children. The manager, a patronizing, rude young woman with purple hair, cut me off in mid-sentence as I expressed my concern about what had happened, saying that anyone who is allergic, doesn't like hearing barking dogs, or just simply wants to have a pleasant shopping experience unimpeded by the fear of attack, can "shop elsewhere." My first time here was for an event to see Renee Carlino speak about her new release Blind Kiss. I called ahead of the event and placed my order. 2 sears (2books) and I bought an additional 4 books to give away to friends. When I arrived we were told that reserved seating (those who bought books) could sit on the chair with a ticket. My friend and I did so. In a room full of people an employee Mary Lee yelled across the room "Did you pay"? My friend and I were the only ones that were asked this and being and we were also the only non white people in the event at the time I'm assuming it had something to do with this. Afterwards she came and said you can't sit here (the front row) and made us move. I understand there could have been seating procedures but at no time was this articulated.... Please get this employee some training this behavior is unacceptable. read more

Noteworthy authors come here for book signings all the time. The events are open to the public and they are free. Most of the authors speak in addition to signing copies of their books. All the events are a great opportunity to see famous writers in the flesh and hear them talk-up their latest publication. But I love the Warwick's book signings because they are free and there isn't much to do in La Jolla on the cheap. read more

Love this store. Fantastic selection of books plus the staff is particularly knowledgeable about what is available. I have never had quite the experience of recommendations for books that I would like based on books I have loved that I have had in this store. They also have a monthly Signed First Edition club that is unique. A full calendar of author events that anyone can attend- For signed books at the events, those must be purchased from the store and I do purchase them, since I want these events to continue! On the gift side of the store there is a lot to recommend. I am hooked on the Graf & Lantz purses, all the fun holiday decor throughout the year, planner accessories, Hulet Glass decorative candies, plus I am always able to find just the right greeting card too. Started shopping there as a tourist 28 years ago. Happy to be able to continue to shop here now as a San Diegan. read more

I don't tend to leave reviews...in fact...this may be my first. But I wanted to give a shoutout to Beth, one of this store's staff members, for her exceptional service! I asked if they had a true crime section and she said unfortunately not (understandable, a niche genre) and that TC titles are mixed in with mystery. As I was perusing a different aisle ten minutes later, Beth approaches me with three different true crime books she'd searched for in the store that she thought might be up my alley. It was above and beyond the call of duty and so sweet! (And I ended up buying two of the three books she brought me!) read more

Ive been here a few times to get some of the gossip girl books and have been treated really bad. I asked them if they had another copy of the book, because the one on the shelf was wrinkled and they guy rolled his eyes and walked away from me. He didnt even bother to give me the wrinkle free copy, he just left it at the register. So When I walked up to pay for my other book, I had to ask and see if the dude had found a better copy. The girl was like "oh here it is", but she said it all rude. The only ood thing is that they have alot of books an they dont have the "pressure selling" feel to them read more

I like the incentive for frequent book buyers-- for every 300 you spend you will get a free book at the end when all your purchases have been averages. They are also happy to order something if they don't have it in stock and will actually call you when it's arrived. The office supply and art supply section is well stocked and good quality items. Nice selection of children's books and unique gifts as well. read more

The bad news is that small, independent bookstores are a dying breed, pushed out of existence by the large chains (Borders, Barnes & Noble) and the big-box superstores (Costco, Wal-Mart). The good news is that we have one of the very best small, independent bookstores -- still alive and well -- right here in La Jolla: Warwick's. If you're a book lover, you've found your place. Great selection, and the salespeople are EXTREMELY knowledgeable about the books they sell. Also, Warwick's is the preferred stop for top-tier book signings, and you're likely to have an opportunity to meet anyone from Anne Rice to Malcolm Gladwell to Margaret Thatcher. And if you're an author, as I am, you've also found your place. I've done a couple of book signings at Warwick's, and the staff did a super job publicizing and supporting the events. They even secured space at the La Jolla library when one of my signings morphed into a workshop that drew more than 100 people. read more

Cute little local bookstore in La Jolla! I love the local, and four stars is mainly for the fact that it is! They also have a nice selection of cards, and I was able to get a cute zebra card for my father-in-law's birthday recently. It was a nice price too, I think under $3 for a really nice card. I didn't have a lot of time to browse, but I did see a lot of nice gift-type items, as well as some books (I think I was in the half of the store that wasn't so much about books as it was other goods). One of my favorite book stores since being a college student in 2005 - they have everything I like from stationary, decor, toys, purses, greeting cards, etc. it's such a fun store to browse. It's like a kid in a candy store. I just love looking at all the neat collections they have. They even carry Filofax which you can rarely find here in San Diego, you would have to order online ..... it's really a gem in Downtown La Jolla and hope they will always be in business! Warwick's is a very charming book/ stationery store. I love how it has an antique feel to it. They have a lot of interesting things for sale, not just books and stationery, but also imported edible goods from Europe, some lovely smelling hand creams, and even adorable dishware. In the bookstore section, they have summarized notes on shelves for staff recommended books, which seemed so thoughtful to me. I ended up picking up a staff recommended novel, an adult coloring book, and some lavender honey drops (which are delicious). Warwick's easily made it on to the list of my favorite places in La Jolla. read more

The RSVP young lady that answer the phone for the Author Michelle Gable Event was extremely rude and fake. I called to get information and RSVP for myself and two other friends. She seemed in a hurry, not willing to explain to me the event and her remark about buying a book just like I would buy a ticket for a movie theater was rude. My friends and I were very excited to buy the book and meet the author. We changed our minds and decided not to visit this place or buy any books from them ever again. read more

This is one of those rare breeds - an actual book store run by people who love books and not owned by a 'big box' company! It's amazing how many books they stock and if they don't have what you want, they can order it for you. The staff have an uncanny knowledge of pretty much exactly what you're looking for. I once went in and said, "I'm looking for this book about the first sailor to sail around...blah blah blah...but I don't remember the name of the book." Voila! They took me right to the book based on my brief description! The staff also put up informative and helpful reviews of the books they've personally read so as you browse the book shelves you can read what they're saying about certain books. The cards selection is fantastic. The party goods (paper plates, napkins, cutlery) are fit for a fete, and the office supplies unique. Where else can you find jazzy files for something as boring as your bill file cabinet?! They also have a great selection of unique gifts, and of course if you are in need of personalized stationary or invitations, this is the place to go! I live nearer to downtown so I used to get my personalized stationary from the old India Ink but since that is no more, I go to Warwicks now. They carry the same stationary options, pricing is basically the same since it's set by the stationary company, and their service is gracious. read more
