    Inside the AT-6 cockpit...
    Alan A.

While my wife and kids spent the day at one one of the Disney parks, I decided to go for a ride in a vintage World War ll aircraft. I had seen Warbird Adventures on TV and decided that I need to go for an aerobatic ride. I made an appointment and off I went. Upon arrival I was greeted by my instructor / pilot, Thom Richards. Because I was taking an aerobatic ride I decided it was best to go on an empty stomach. I've never gotten airsick in the past but thought it best not to take a chance in the small confines of a WWll airplane. Thom took me for the walk around to inspect the aircraft. I then entered the airplane, an AT-6 Texan, and Thom gave me my pre-flight instructions. This included strapping on a parachute then the seat belt harness. I sat in the front seat and Thom sat in the rear. He fired up the Pratt & Whitney engine and we taxied out to the runway. We were both wearing headsets to communicate and I was able to hear the instructions from air traffic control. He brought the engine up to take off power and off we went. As soon as we were airborne he had me retract the landing gear. Sitting in the back he did not have access to landing gear controls. With the gear up and locked he had me take the stick and proceeded to instruct me on stick and rudder controls. He had me fly the airplane to the aerobatic area. The first maneuver was to roll the airplane Thom did it first giving me the instructions I would need when it was my turn. After he did it he told me to take the stick and roll the plane. What a thrill to put the nose up at 30º then throw the stick all the way to the left. The airplane did the roll and he congratulated me for turning an airplane up side down. The next maneuver was a loop after he demonstrated how to do it it was my turn. I did the loop and was very proud of myself. I then asked him to take the controls and put me through the aerobatic pattern. I just wanted to be a passenger at that time. I found it hard to enjoy the ride while doing the aerobatics. Thom did his best to make me throw up but it didn't work. The ride was FANTASTIC. During the ride he was videotaping our flight and also taking still photographs. When it was time to return to the airport he had me fly the plane back. After we landed, I had to put the landing gear back down, he taxied the plane to the hanger where he gave me a copy of the video and the roll of film from the still camera. I had the film developed at the Disney resort to show my family what I had done. If you ever find yourself in the Kissimmee area go for a ride. Afterwards I took a tour of the adjoining warbird museum.

This is a really nice little museum. It was the perfect spot for my son to bond with his grandfather and learn about the war.

I chose the 30 minute flight and was piloting the aircraft within five minutes of leaving the ground.

As I wanted to get out of the city and see the surrounding area, I opted to go with their 5-hour Carolina Countryside tour, which is a culinary tour offered once a week. The tour includes several stops including the historic Pointsett Bridge, the base of Table Rock Mountain, a tea farm, and 2 food stops at the Cherokee Country Club and Aunt Sue's Country Corner. The first stop was at Core 450 restaurant at Cherokee Valley Country Club. We were able to sample some absolutely delicious food with beautiful views of the golf course. Their French toast was some of the best I've ever had, and chicken items were also of very high quality. The second main stop was a tea farm at Table Rock Tea Company. The owner was super enthusiastic in showing us around the tea farm, but the tour did seem to drag on for those that weren't overly interested in the tea process. The sweet tea samples were refreshing on a very hot and sunny day. The final stop was a buffet style meal at Aunt Sue's Country Corner. Personally, I thought the food quality here was pretty poor and much preferred the food at our first stop. I know this was a food tour, but felt it could have done without the final stop, and could have been more balanced if it explored the mountain or lakes of the area more, with just the country club food stop and perhaps stops for coffee/baked goods and/or ice cream along the way. Overall, this tour was a great introduction to the area, and the food tour parts of it definitely filled guests up. I would suggest that this tour be tweaked to be a nature and countryside tour with less emphasis on food and a bit more exploration. The tour operator/owner, John Nolan was an absolute delight offering great narration and audiovisuals to help us gain a better understanding of the history of the area. I wouldn't hesitate to take another tour with Greenville History Tours, and would recommend their tours to any visiting the Greenville area.
