I was here with my college-age daughter for two nights in June, my first time at this hostel. I'll break it down as such: THE GOODS - Houston is a sprawling city, but this location is right where I wanted to be - I was here for the Museum District and the downtown area primarily and this was mere minutes away with my car. Even had I traveled on foot there were places to eat, as documented in the hostel's common area. They even gave directions to Beyonce's childhood home which is in the neighborhood. - Free street parking in front of the hostel, with plenty of room. - Friendly check-in process - note the check-in takes place from 4-9pm. was walked through the various codes I needed to use for the gate, the front door, and my room. - The common area is pretty cozy with board games and such, and one of the nights I was there I saw some people hanging out there which was nice. Had we not had evening plans and been general Eastern-Time-Zone zombies by the time we got back, we probably would have checked it out more. - Our room had a bunk bed setup, floor and ceiling fan, and even an ensuite bathroom - for $60/night this is a very good deal! No noise at night, a very peaceful room setup. THE NOT-SO-GOODS - When I first arrived, I was admittedly a little underwhelmed with the location - the neighborhood, at least on a summer afternoon, had a quiet, almost abandoned feel, and the hostel's street is directly next to the banks of an elevated highway. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a slight feeling of uneasiness. But this was all my imagination attempting to play tricks on me, and there was nothing wrong at all and again I was happy to be so close to the places I wanted to visit in town. And as mentioned, the highway noise didn't impact our rest. - That's it! Simply put, this was a great base for our time in the city and when I return to Houston I will definitely plan on this as my lodging. read more

Wanderstay Hotels - Hostels Near Me - Houston, Texas

I visited Houston for a weekend trip to take care of some personal business here. I stayed in a 4 bed room. The beds were bigger than anticipated, there were lockers available for storage, curtains on each window to block out the light and a box fan. I did not like that they did not have a ceiling fan but I understand for safety reasons they could not because they have bunk beds in there. There was free street parking and It was at the end of a cul de sac so only local traffic passed by there. The front gate and the front door both had keyless access, meaning you have to know the code to get in and it made me feel safe knowing that was there. The keypads were also installed in each room in the place. This means every time you wanted to enter your room you had to punch in your individual code to gain access to the room. I like this because it keeps people from 'accidentally' going into your room or getting 'locked out' and having to go downstairs to the front desk to get help. Because of the location being at the end of the street off the service road, there was not much foot traffic but i did hear a lot of car traffic nearby. Because I was in and out mostly in the afternoon I did not really interact with the staff. Once I asked the front staff for some more toilet paper because they were out and another time I asked them about the bus schedule. Downstairs was an open layout living and sitting room. Upstairs was the kitchen and that seemed to be busier compared to downstairs. The shower was big as spacious, it was minimal but clean. TL;DR at bottom if you're not seeking a novella. Affordable, private rooms in hostels are hard to come by. When I saw a room for one in a highly rated hostel for $47 a night, I happily jumped on it. Turns out it's not all sunshine and rainbows. Maybe I'm just getting older. This hostel delivered on providing a safe and clean place to stay. However, when it comes to comfort and quality of sleep, it fell short. For me to get good quality sleep, it should be quiet, cool, dark, and with comfortable bedding. These could just be a me thing, so form your own judgments. To start with the good: the hostel was clean and felt safe. Access to the hostel and rooms are controlled with a passcode. This passcode changes on a regular basis. On the flip side, especially if you are in a shared room, anyone with the code can enter. If your roommate decides to share the code with a non-guest, they will have access until codes are changed. Same goes for someone who has supposedly checked out. Location-wise, The hostel is fine if you rent a car or Uber. But, some general advice: Houston does not have particularly good public transportation, and there is a long-ish walk to downtown (and at night, it might be best not to walk the 1-2 miles even if you can). Rent a car or be prepared to Uber everywhere. If you rent, and want to sleep easy that you won't be liable for damage, pay the $10 extra for gated parking. While I had no issues, some painted lines would have been very helpful. Where it comes to the less good: Outside the window are two busy elevated highways with Incredibly bright LED lamps. The light filtering curtains let in far more light than is conducive to good sleep, to say nothing of the noise. As for the bedding, the sheets were more than a little oversized for the mattress. As someone who tosses and turns a bit, halfway through the night these are bound to become a wrinkled, uncomfortable mess. The temperature does not help things, as at one point the thermostat read 77°. (To be fair, other nights were a few degrees cooler). This was in early November. The room itself wasn't thought out very well either. The headboard and a tiny table with lamp (and outlet) are diagonal from you. Unless you leave your phone charging on the other side of the room, the power strip will "decorate" essentially the entire floor space. Another issue: the bathrooms came perilously close to running flat out of TP. The stock was running low and not replenished for my entire stay. When I had to put a sign saying "No more TP" on the door to warn people, you know it's not a great situation. This shortage was true of both restrooms. TL;DR: Where it comes to the private room for one: An inexpensive, safe-seeming, and clean place to crash. But, the highways outside mean noise and bright light is a given with the poor curtains. Location is alright, it could be a lot worse, but not in downtown. Also, be ware of a deficit of TP! read more

Heads up to first timers wanting to reserve a room here. It is my first time staying here. But it was not my first time reserving a room here. This is not like booking a hotel/motel, then you show up. This establishment requires guest to fill-out an online questionnaire a day or so prior to checking in. Something I did not know the first time around until it was too late. And I ended up booking another place last minute. I could have easily given up on this place. But decided instead to give it another shot now that I know what I need to do beforehand. I eventually got into this establishment. I am impress on a lot of things. It has everything one expects at a first class hostel. Overall cleanliness from the beds, shared rooms, bathrooms. kitchen and study quarters, etc. And it has the basics like fresh linens and towels, and most importantly, ear plugs. I wasn't exactly a fan of the contactless check-In, but I understand why they do it. I didn't see staff at anytime during my one-night stay. Overall, this place is an ideal for solo travelers. But be prepared and fill-out everything this is required beforehand. read more

Just try it! This was my first time staying at a hostel and I was not disappointed. I spent 5 nights at The Wanderstay. The place is a charming, cozy building, with these cool themed rooms. I was in the female dorm room (8 beds, 2 showers 1toilet) and it was a Beyoncé themed room. There's other rooms like Houston sports teams, Rodeo, NASA, etc. The room was very clean and was cleaned daily, which I appreciated. The Wanderstay also has a full kitchen with all the amenities you'll need and multiple washrooms/bathrooms on every floor. The Wanderstay also felt very secure and safe and gives you options to keep your things safe if you want to. Like lockers, bring a lock though. The staff were helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. The guest were very respectful of the rules and also very courteous when it came to things like showers or bathroom use. We had lots of great conversations huddle around the intimate kitchen table too. The only negative things I have to say about my experience at the Wanderstay is the front gate is somewhat difficult to use. Which made getting out of the Wanderstay with things in your hand almost impossible. Also, in some spots you could really see the wear on the place. Lastly, The Wanderstay is by a busy highway so you will get street noise. If you're a light sleeper this will be hell for you. I can sleep through anything so I wasn't bothered that much. Overall though this place was great and the price was right. Those minor things did not affect me enough. The staff, location and people visiting really made this a very memorable stay for me. If you're looking to try something different I would definitely recommend this hostel. read more

This was my first time staying in a hostel and it was pretty neat. The place was clean and in a decent location. I stayed in the female room and it was full, but everyone was very respectful and tidy so I had no issues. The bathroom was connected to our room and it was kept clean by everyone staying in the room. I rented a lock for a locker, but I was the only one that did! I felt very safe. Every door has a keypad. I paid for gated parking which was really not necessary, but I liked it. I was on the top bunk which wasn't awful but the beds are pretty flimsy and the steps to climb hurt your feet. Overall it was a decent stay if you're into the hostel thing it's a great option. It was a fun experience for me. read more

In-house staff and people were great! HOWEVER, the young lady they have on the customer service line is in the Wrong position. This was the absolute rudest person I have EVER spoken to, anywhere. Lacked (or chose to ignore) even common decency people skills. She literally treated me like her biggest annoyance and not a paying customer. She has some kind of superiority complex. Who threatens to cancel a paid booking just because a customer has questions? I needed some help with issues that started on her end and she wanted to do everything but basic customer service. In addition to all this, made me wait outside unnecessarily long at night in the neighborhood where anything could have happened. Nothing compares to the Rich Hostel. This place only takes debit cards. I wonder why? Terrible front desk. Couldn't check me in. Almost ruined the trip. Luckily I found another actual Hostel that accepts any form of payment. Kind visitor offered to pay for a night in exchange for cash. I was grateful but the front desk said it wouldn't accept his payment. All those signs in the lobby about racism need to be turned around and read aloud just to make sure it's understood. Checking in was somewhat confusing. I booked the private room over the telephone with Anna and was told that there would be one of two people on site later for me to check in. Most of what I was told differed from when I got to the place and had to call to be let in by Nicole as there was no employee on site. There was quite a note of rudeness also while I was on the telephone with Nicole. I explained (as I had to the person that booked the room) that I do not have internet on my telephone and can't access my email. After a few minutes of unpleasantness in my direction, I had to ask to be given the codes to the doors over the telephone. Nicole explained that Anna (the girl that booked my room) had only been working there for two weeks and was fully up to speed on procedure. I dropped off my things and went out to eat. Upon returning, I laid on the bed and began having breathing and sinus problems. My eyes were irritated and puffy. Then, I realized that there was some kind of perfume all over the pillow on my bed in the "Space City" room. Odd name for such a tiny room. I took the pillow, blanket and towels that had been on the pillow and tossed them into the hall. Afterward, I had to wash thoroughly to get the scent off of me. I began to realize that there was also a strong Proctor & Gamble-type air freshner or cleanser that had been used in the building. I called the help line for Wanderstay there and got no answer or reply back to my message asking for another pillow. The next day, Iuliana (who was actually physically downstairs at the front desk) said that she would speak to management on my behalf and would wait to hear what they said. She was actually quite polite and a very kind person. I never heard anything before I checked out. In the end, I emailed the contact email on the website to tell them the trouble I had and that I would appreciate a refund. This is the reply I recieved: " Hello, As staff let you know, we do not use any perfumes on any of our bedding. The smell you were smelling was from air fresheners that are around the hostel to keep it smelling fresh and clean. Unfortunately, we can not give you a refund due to the hostel having a perfume smell. All the best, Wanderstay Houston 281 501 9610 www.WanderstayHotels.com" First of all, there was no staff that 'let me know' anything. Secondly, the argumental and rather condescending tone was quite insulting. Third, the insensitivity to someone with respiratory problems and sever allergies is shameful in the hospitality industry. This isn't so much 'bad business' as it's 'not business.' The room and experience were certainly not worth the $57 and change that I paid. If you or your traveling companions have respiratory problems, do not lodge here. They use harsh, man-made chemicals with extreme fragrances. Note: The Space City room has some sort of bulge in the ceiling suggesting a leak that was sloppily covered over. The flooring beside the bed is also unstable. Also...there are no curtains for privacy in the bathroom. I agree with Patrice about all the Social Justice Warrior vibe being rather hypocritical. read more

Just finished a stay here...Place is clean & nice. I would've gave a higher rating if it wasn't for the unprofessional security lady that hassled us for checking in after 10pm on our first night. After her trying to display her superiority through the security camera for over 30min & trying to intimidate us along w/ the guest that let us in. We tried to show her our IDs & explain that the hostel charge the full stay in advance (which establishes in an agreement in itself) but she was more concerned about being right at 1am then helping us out after a long travel from CA. She finally contacted the staff & everything went smoothly after that. We never heard from this "security" lady again... not even an apology. On site staff was good though. Note to management, change security. Guests should never be treated the way we were & the guy who let us in. We'll never stay here again. read more

I'm so glad this place opened in Houston! It's clean, centrally located, and very comfortable. I ended up staying here with a group of friends that came to visit me in Houston. Since it was such a big group this made things simple and cost effective for all involved. There's absolutely nothing like this in Houston. The rooms let in plenty of light, have large beds, and plenty of room for your suitcase, and a locker for other valuables. There's nothing worse than being in a musty dungeon-like place where you constantly worry about your stuff being tinkered with. This definitely wasn't that!!! I'd recommend this place to anyone. Very cool hostel near downtown and midtown Houston. The checkin process was remote and super easy and the hostel was so clean and smelled so good which is not something I've experienced staying at other hostels. What are you waiting for? Stay here. I've stayed at hostels in 38 countries. Wanderstay is one of my favorites and it's independently owned. The hostel is new and cleverly designed. Lots of great space to relax and beautiful places take a selfie with unique murals. The staff is friendly and super helpful. The rooms are amazing. The full-size beds make all the difference and are extremely comfortable. The sheets are super soft. The lockers are large and there's plenty of space for luggage. The rooms had black out curtains that made it very easy to sleep anytime of the day. I also loved the location. The hostel is right in the middle of everything. There are several bars and restaurants in walking distance. I especially loved Axelrad beer garden and Luigi's pizzeria. I walked all over and felt safe the entire time. It was also easy to go to other downtown areas. There were plenty of activities offered and many fun guests. I would highly recommend Wanderstay. read more

I loved this hostel. Check in was super easy, the place was super clean and I loved that they have an activity area downstairs letting people know what's going on in Houston. It's also the perfect size hostel, not too big and not too small. It's in the Museum area of Houston so it was really close to parks, restaurants and museums. I recently attended an IT conference in Houston and I thought it would be a really cool idea to book a room at Wanderstay. I'm happy I made this decision. Wanderstay Houston is such an awesome place to stay. Check-in was such a breeze. The staff was very polite and well informed about the Houston area. I needed suggestions for cool restaurants and/or bars to check out during my downtime, and the Wanderstay team was very helpful. The property was very clean, specifically the bathrooms, which was a major plus. The beds were a nice size and very comfortable. The one thing I like the most about Wanderstay Houston is how diverse the guests are. I met a few really cool people at Wanderstay Houston. I highly recommend this property. The owner is great!
