I recently purchased my new Gazelle bike from Walton Street Cycles and had multiple lovely experiences with Will. I went in first to window shop and see what they had to offer so I could go home and do my research. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they don't price gauge after reviewing Gazelles webpage to compare. Will talked me through their selection and also offered me a test ride which I declined the first visit as I didn't have time. The next day I went back and he again helped me decide between 3 bikes while also juggling other customers. He was very personable & helpful as I haven't purchased a new bike since I was a kid! He didn't make me feel stupid for asking basic questions. His colleague also helped teach me how to use the lock I purchased. Shady shady company. I went there looking to buy a bike and they only had two small and shaby ones in stock. whatever. I ended up finding a nearby competitor, "Bainton Bikes", online and calling them. The Bainton bikes guy told me they had "a ton of different bikes for sale". Turns out despite being listed and advertised online as a separate company, Bainton bikes is Walton street cycles. I called back and asked why they said they had "a ton of options" when they only had two. The guy kept lying about the number of bikes on sale until I told him I had been at the store 30 minutes prior, and then became quite nasty. ANY option is a better option! read more

NEVER RENT FROM HERE - from start to finish it was easily the worst experience I have had in oxford. tl;dr - I was rented a bike with a flat tire (reluctantly, since I am a women and they only have mens bikes). Then instead of a refund or free day of cycling for this mistake, was met with antagonism and criticism. Full account below: I came in on a Thursday to inquire about renting a road bike for Sunday. I was told "We don't have women's road bikes". I then had to ask, "could I rent a mens then?", and was told that they did have small road bikes that would fit me. Instead of the default being to exclude women from renting these types of bikes, the shop could easily make it policy to say "We don't have women's-style road bikes but if you are ok renting a men's-style bike then we are happy to size you". I then came in Sunday for my bike and took it out. Just a few miles out, the tire went flat. A friend I was riding with (thankfully since we were in the middle of nowhere) leant me a spare inner tube, and in the process of chaning the tire we realized the inner tube had been previously patched several times, and there was an obvious hole in one of the patches. We both searched for a puncture but could not find one. Basically, Walton street cycles rented me a bike with a poorly-patched inner tube that went flat within miles. Everyone in my group agreed I should ask for a refund. Now the worst part. I return the bike the next morning (Monday June 24), and tell the story. Jim, the manager, immediately meets me with antagonism and disbelief: "If you realized it was flat why didn't you come straight back?" and when I asked for a refund "We don't have time to check every inner-tube". If that is the case, then why isn't every customer given a spare tube and patch kit? When I at least asked for them to take my friends inner tube out (I was dressed for work and didn't want to get grease on my hands and then computer) I was told "You can do it yourself we are busy". I was in disbelief. I couldn't believe that not only did I not get an apology for the hassle but was in fact being criticized and antagonized. Finally, when I told Jim that this had been the worst experience from the start, when I was basically told the shop didn't rent to women, he immediately waved me off and stormed to the back of the shop, refusing to listen. It seems this shop has absolutely no interest in their customers' experience. So basically, I paid 15 pounds to rent a "mens" cycle with a flat tire, and then get criticized and berated for trying to communicate how difficult the experience had been. When you rent a bike you are doing so to make the experience easier then owning your own. This won't be the case with Walton street. I would go anywhere else in oxford to rent a bike, unless you want the hassle of a breakdown in the deserted English countryside, and bad attitudes to boot. read more

My sister in law found Walton Street Cycles when the normal bike hire that she uses wouldn't answer her calls. You make the arrangements at their main shop, then walk around a few corners to get to their garage. For two of us to rent bikes for 4 hours, it was £10 I admit that I am not a cyclist by any definition. Yes, I know how to ride a bike, but I'm not terribly comfortable with knowing when to change gears or what gear I should be in. I'm also pretty tall for a girl and an 2/3 legs, so I need a taller bike. In our hiring of the bikes, we got very little information. The bike was absolutely not the right size for me, and there were no tools for me to adjust anything, even the seat height, which would've been a great help. The man giving us the bikes at the shop wouldn't even provide basic directions, instead making us buy a map £2. He did provide one massive bike lock that could be used around both bikes. There's a sign that warns they'll charge you £15 for not returning the lock. I ended up crashing, so it was my husband and sister-in-law that returned the bikes, so I've got little to go on for that part. If you're a seasoned cyclist who knows plenty about biking and you insist on the proper fit, this might work for you. If you're a tourist who isn't accustomed to biking, I don't recommend. read more

Walton Street Cycles is no Cycle King or Halfords, but if all you're after is bits and bobs for your bike, it does the job just fine. There's a small but good range of bikes - mainly road bikes in the traditional Oxford style, but also some BMXs and an unusually high proportion of folding bikes. I always find these rather amusing, but they must be pretty useful for commuters. It's good for normal bikes and for more unusual requests. A team of mechanical types seem to be able to fix most problems - I know some people who have had punctures fixed here and brakes tweaked, and seemed pretty happy. Personally, I use it for anti-rust spray, oil and puncture repair kits. The first time I went in I described in a very blonde way what I wanted and was given the right product with patience - always a plus. There's also an excellent range of accessories: some clothing, lights - important now police are handing out on-the-spot fines at night, saddles, locks and helmets. It really feels like a local store and there's a lot more crammed in than you'd expect. read more

When I lived in Finland they even sent me bike components because I was unable to get them there.......you'd have to go a long way to find something better!!!!!! read more

Very happy with recent help from Walton St Cycles; it's the best place I know in Oxford for child cycle transport. I bought a child cycle seat from them about two years ago because they were the only Oxford shop that stocked the child's Roland Add-A-Bike PLUS a compatible rear child seat to fit onto the bike rack (so you can transport two children at once). We used the seat every day and eventually my toddler managed to break the clasp on it. I'm fairly sure the seat wasn't even under warranty any more but the people at Walton St Cycles sent the faulty strap back to the manufacturer and replaced it with a new one - no quibbles and free of charge. When I was worried that the new strap might take a long time to arrive and that I would have no child transport in the meantime, they gave me a hire bike with child seat to use - again, free of charge. I will definitely remain loyal to this shop in the future! read more

I was on a bike tour through the UK and was working with Walton Street Cycles to have my bike packed in a box to ship it back to New York City in the USA. Although they were reasonably friendly and agreed in advance to pack up my bike same day, they quality of the packing job was egregiously shoddy. When I received my bike in the USA my brake levels were poking out of the box with no protection as was the skewer of my wheel. The bike was not disassembled whatsoever for protection. A small amount of bubble wrap was basically thrown into the box without really being wrapped around any important parts. If you are looking for care and quality for packing up a bike, don't come here. read more

Not happy with this shop at all. Massive let down. Took the bike I bought from them for my girlfriend back with a broken hub. This happened just as we were riding along a canal towpath - nothing serious. I investigate Formula 1 race car material failures for a living and know that this was a material defect in the hub. They tried to argue we'd given it a knock which is complete rubbish... Finally they agreed to take it in under warranty (it was less than a year old afterall). They sent the wheel back to the manufacturer, then we heard nothing. When I phoned up to get some news they seemed extremely annoyed that I'd called them and said they'd call me. Another week and still no news. My girlfriend actually went into the shop on several occasions to try to find out what was going on as she desperately needed her bike but they were very rude to her just for asking! Eventually I had to chase round and phone up the bike manufacturer (Pashley) myself! They were very nice and said they'd already sent the replacement wheel back with guaranteed next day delivery. So I phone the shop again - even ruder this time and apparently still no wheel. Another week passes with a few more phone calls and visits made by myself and my girlfriend - all with extremely rude, unhelpful and unapologetic responses. Finally they call her and say the new wheel has arrived... but they won't fit it because they are too busy. Too busy for a 5 minute job to put a wheel on a bike!! They just didn't want to help us out at all. Finally 4 weeks later we get the bike back, after an even ruder phone call - they were offensive, patronising, condescending and even hung up on me!! All we wanted was the bike back or at least some news about it. All I got was frustration and disrespect. We spent a highly inconvenient 4 weeks without the bike and they didn't seem to care one little bit. Lousy, slow and very rude staff. Terrible service! I will never go there again and strongly advise anyone against shopping there. Do yourself a favour - avoid! P.S. I would now like to add to my review since Walton Street Cycles, AKA "GenuineCyclist", has added a review of their own trying to discredit mine. I am not in any way accosiated with any of their competitors and am a genuine (ex)customer of theirs. I'm a passionate bicycle enthusiast with well over 20 years of being a bicycle customer. My review is genuine and they know it. Never in my life have I experienced such bad customer service They're now just desperately trying to dig themselves out of the dirty hole they're in. It is not part of any campaign, just real, honest fact. They know exactly who I am and that I am not childish or thier competitor and I have proof of this in the message "GenuineCyclist" has sent to me. In this message they were even more abusive to me and this is yet more evidence and testament of how disgustingly bad they treat their customers. If anyone would like to see that message I'm willing to forward it on to anyone interested. My review was nothing against Pashley. In fact when I spoke to Pashley myself they were very helpful, informative, courteous and apologetic. (It was actually a Sturmey Archer part that failed). My review is completely about and against Walton Street Cycles. If you want to buy a Pashely, by all means do! They're fantastic bikes, just buy one from a decent shop like Warlands on Botley Road - who's service is exemplary in my own and completely unbiased opinion based on my own experience. And no I am not related to Warlands other than being a member of the public and a customer. Walton Street Cycles may be well established but their staff are turning them into an abomination. So much so they have to leave 5* 'reviews' of their own shop trying counter, belittle and discredit genuine poor reviews like mine. Any 'review' a shop needs to write about itself should naturally be taken with a massive handful of salt! Nothing I've written is a lie, everything "GenuineCyclist" has written is. I'm a very rational man and nearly never have a bad word to say about anyone, but this offensive, slack, lazy and rude shop took the biscuit and I needed to speak out about it. Wish I'd read the other reviews before I went here. I wanted something slightly more complicated done to my bike. Nice talk with the young woman in the shop so I booked my bike in. When I arrived with it a few days later, the mechanic spent 20 minutes patronisingly telling me why it wasn't worth doing. Maybe he's a lazy b, maybe I wasn't a 20 year old female with big tits but instead an older woman with 30 years experience of serious cycling and he found that difficult to handle. It's not surprising that the likes of Halfords and Cycle King prosper because they at least have an understanding of customer service and treat you with respect. Traditional bike shops like this have a lot to learn, I've avoided them for years and could have done without the waste of time and irritation that came out of visiting this one. I've taken my bike elsewhere and it wasn't a traditional bike shop. My advice is don't bother with this one. read more
