They will sell you bikes (new and refurbished) or parts, and do a very good job of servicing your bike for you, but this is a place where passion is more important than business. As well as acting as a gathering point for Oxford cyclists, and a distributor of information on safe cycling, they provide a membership scheme. For an annual fee of £9 (£6 for the unwaged), you get free workshop access and support, a dividend card which allows you to collect point on all items in stock which build towards discounts, discounted Introduction to Cycle Maintenance Courses, one-on-one training, access to further courses such as wheel building, and a monthly e-mail newsletter. Really helpful, and have 'new' stock all the time so do go back if they don't have what you're after first time. V helpful for bike maintenance as well as purchasing. Would definitely recommend getting a good quality 'recycled bike' from here rather than a new shiny one that matches all the others from one of the Cowley Rd shops...

Appalling bike shop. I placed my bike in the shop at 09:30 for the fitting of two new tyres with…read morethe promise that it would be done by 15:00. This job had been agreed two days before. I arrived at the shop at 15:40 and the job had not been done. The owner then told me that he was doing me a favour as I knew a friend of his - I have absolutely no idea what he meant by this statement. I left the shop with my bike and the old tyres. I have wasted my time and petrol driving to the shop twice. Bad service from a shop that is both dishonest and incapable of time management when doing basic jobs. It goes to show that giving an independent shop a chance is a waste of time.

Behind Bars is one of the worst services I've had the misfortune to pay for in almost 20 years of…read morecycling. I took an old style, internally geared Pashley here for an inner tube replacement after I got a puncture. Throughout, I found their service to be ill-informed, shoddy and occasionally hostile. Firstly, they tried to sell me a tyre that I didn't need simply on the basis of some cosmetic cracks. As the site of the late, great, Sheldon Brown will tell you, tyres do not have to be replaced for this reason and will go for several thousand kilometres before needing replacement. The tyres in my case were among the toughest on the market, Schwalbe Marathon Pluses with less than a thousand km on them. Then they replaced the inner tube. All seemed fine at first, until the wheel in question started working itself loose. I took it back to Behind Bars. Rather than apologise and immediately pledge to rectify the issue, instead they chose to insult my bike, saying Pashleys are a "nightmare" to work with. Frankly, that's not my problem. They either they take my money and deliver the service or they don't. Either way, and as I'm paying over the odds for a puncture repair on an internally-geared bike, they could at least be polite. Their 'solution' to the problem? Violently twisting the skirt-guards on the rear wheel until the scraping stopped. Inside, I was screaming that this wouldn't be a permanent fix, as the issue was clearly the wheel, not the skirt-guards, but I foolishly opted to trust their 'experience' instead. Lo and behold, 30 miles from Abingdon a couple of days later, the wheel smeared into the frame, making it unrideable. Never again. Pedal Power (Abingdon's other bike shop) has its faults, but at least they're nice to work with. Go there for your bike needs, and avoid Behind Bars.

It's recently been taken over and the new manager is really friendly and has introduced some new ranges, so it's well worth a visit. As the name suggests, the focus is on outdoors clothing and equipment, so expect fleeces, walking trousers, raincoats and walking boots. There's also a good range of camping equipment, ranging from tents to caravan gear, camping stove and dubious looking mountain food. Think Millets, but bigger. If you're not used to outdoor shops, it's great fun looking at the gadgets like 'sporks' (half spoon, half fork) and 'platypuses' (water bladders in backpacks with a giant straw). If you are used to outdoor shops, you'll be bound to find something here. I must confess to being a bit of an outdoors snob, but there are some really good bargains here, especially with waterproofs, and you can't go wrong with generic camping bits and bobs. There's even a new and improved rock climbing section with all the basics. It's probably the best place for rock shoes and harnesses in the area and the manager can give some very useful advice. There are sections for fishing, running, cycling and even skiing, and whilst this is in no way a specialist shop for any of them, it's big enough to have a reasonable range of basic items to satisfy the enthusiast's immediate needs. Go and buy lots of fun gadgets and look forward to your holidays, when living in a tent suddenly seems like such a fun idea.
