These hotdogs, split and half and served with their one of a kind mustard sauce, may not be pretty, in fact they look downright nasty, but trust me; they taste way better than they look. 1. Hot Dogs are delicious. They're split, and fried in butter. And the buns are toasted, instead of steamed. No Cole slaw or chili available on the dogs. Only ketchup & mustard, and the mustard is like a Grey Poupon kind, not American bright yellow mustard. 2. New England Clam Chowder is heavenly! Dip your hot dogs into it, too. These were the instructions from the cashier lady taking my order through the window. Very good advice! 3. Coffee Milk Shake is quite good. Someone had really hyped this place up for me so I was pretty stoked to try it. Didn't quite live up to expectations. It was a decent hot dog but I've had better on multiple occasions. I was a little surprised to see that it was split down the middle....and I am not sure that I liked that idea. But it's their own unique take on the hot dog and I respect that. That being said, I love little historical places like this that have withstood the test of time. I don't know if you will appreciate their take on the hot dog. It's a good quality hot dog. It is homemade with veal, pork, and beef. The bun is toasted with delicious grease but not too oily and the hot dog is cut in half and grilled on both sides. Top it with home made mustard or ketchup. This hot dog won't make you feel like crap like after eating a standard hot dog. Potato bites and fries are pretty standard. Now, I am not sure if we got lucky and went on the right night. They had a cross over with Black Tap. Serving the big decorated cups of milkshake, see picture. Walter's homemade Oreo ice cream, whipped creme, vanilla frosting, Oreo cookies and crunch. The crew from Black Tap was making it at Walter's. Their shakes are also something worth trying and very delicious. There is definitely a line during typical lunch/dinner hours, but the wait usually isn't too bad. We stopped here for lunch on our way to up to The Cape and had an okay lunch. Décor: So, this really doesn't apply, other than the place having a distinctly Chinese appearance, as you can only order from the window and then either take away your food or eat at their picnic tables. However, the picnic area is actually pretty nice. There are a handful of tables, all shaded, in a mulched area with trash cans available. The trees help to block the street traffic so it ends up being kind of enjoyable. The line can get a bit long during the standard lunch times though, so be advised. Bathroom: They do have a bathroom and it is pretty basic. Staff: The cashier was friendly and the other staff was semi-quick making the food. I had to wait a bit longer than expected but there was a very large order in front of me. Food: I am a big, BIG hotdog fan so my standards are pretty high... this place doesn't exactly fit the bill. They must use some kind of proprietary hotdog because it doesn't taste like a "normal" one - perhaps it is a big porky or something. Anyway, I've certainly had better - everyone else there, mostly locals, seemed to be delighted by the taste, so it's probably just me. The curly fries were very good though! Well passed it's prime. Once a memorable spot loses it's desire to excel, it loses it's ability to provide that experience and Walter's is a case in point. I stopped by for the traditional sliced "weiner" and curly fries, dutifully paid the $11 (not cheap) and was excited to dive into the fries and hot dog. Well, the fries were cold and still slightly frozen and the weiner was just that, nothing special. Now, I grew-up in Montreal where we had tons of "Casse-croute" or snack bars with great french fries and hot dogs, steamed, grilled, you name it. Walter's doesn't hold a candle to these "joints" and frankly for the $11, I'd rather buy some knockwursts and frozen curly fries at Trader Joe's and go to town. I think my taste buds changed over the years. I used to love this place back in high school. However over 10 years later, and now the hot dog is just ehhhh. THe mustard is still solid though. Probably one of the best mustards i ever tried. However, i'm not a fan of their hot dog anymore. I prefer a Nathans. I just feel like there isn't much flavor in the hot dog and you need the mustard to add some bite. I do appreciate how they butter up and toast their buns though, and i love their curly fries. overall, this place is okay. It used to be better IMO.
