I can always take my time there with no crowds or sales pitches yet always find someone friendly to help when needed. The best nursery in town for the weekend gardener. We've been working on redoing our front yard and are at the stage where we get to plant flowers, trees, and bushes. This is equal parts the most exciting and also most nerve racking. To the untrained eye (me), most of the of the plants look the exact same. Luckily, there's a help desk for people who know what they're looking for, but not what plant it is. Our garden Sherpa walked with us out to the specific plant and then helped us pick out the healthiest looking one. He also discouraged us from picking plants that require lots of water. It's a tad more expensive than the big box stores, but it easily makes up for it with high quality service and an amazing selection. Such a good experience every time I come here. read more

Welcome to decision fatigue....if you love plants. This place had it all, there were so many plants to choose from. I ended up in the tropical section and yet found myself swept over to the bonsai trees they had. And yes, I ended up buying both types of plants. The service was friendly and knowledgable. There were plenty of hands on site and I have to say those little wagons they give you are such a nice touch. This is like the Costco of plants. I will come back and shop when I have more $$$ to spend on plants but for now this will do. They have house plants, outdoor plants, garden specific plants, wall plants. The location of Walter Anderson's Nursery in Point Loma is a bit tricky to find. Most people take Kurtz Street from Rosecrans Street south to the nursery. The parking lot can be tight at times, which can be an issue. There are two handicapped spaces at each side of the entrance. The nursery stocks a large selection of plants. There are numerous camellia varieties for the cooler Point Loma climate. However because I live in La Mesa with colder winter extremes, I have to be careful in my selection. Prices are on the high side, but that is because you are not at a big box chain store, which I see as a plus. I am willing to pay a premium for service and selection, especially if the plant you are seeking to buy is of a more exotic variety and not readily available in the Garden Centers of Lowe's or Home Depot. As an example of the pricing, I bought a pale green ceramic flat dish on which to place a pot for $33.00. The same dish at Home Deport--- if they had it, which they do NOT---would have been about $12.95. However, I got the perfect sea foam green dish for my pot of the same color, so I am happy. On Friday, I went to Walter Anderson's in search of a lemon tree for my garden. I was assisted by Chris who knew all of the varieties and where they were located. He showed me the Meyer Lemon, the Genoa Lemon and the Eureka Lemon, which I ended up purchasing. It was beautiful and strong, and Chris even pruned off an errant branch to create a better shape for the tree. You do not receive that personalized care at the big box nurseries, so that is a major reason I like to patronize a nursery like Walter Anderson's in Point Loma. read more

Not as good as their Poway location. This Walter Anderson is located in an industrial area that's not far from the seedy midway district. The parking lot it small in both number of spaces and parking space size. If you have a truck or suv it might be tough to park in their lot, let alone navigate through it. You can park on the side street but make sure you lock your car and hide your valuables. Selection is good and they should have the type of plants you're looking for. They're thin on succulents and cacti. Personally, I'd much rather go to the Poway location. - Not the most helpful when it comes to service. - More expensive here than at Poway which is weird because they're the same company. - Crazy busy here on weekends. So expect a long line at the cashier. It's the only nursery in the city of San Diego area. read more

I have purchased over $1000 worth of plants from Walter Andersen Nursery. We were re-doing our entire landscape, and was creating a plant fence between our property and the neighbor's. So we bought a lot of shrubs, flowers, and succulents. I give two stars to their friendly custom service. Whenever I shop there, the staff are nice and happy to answer my questions. Where are the rest of three stars? They lost me on the selection and value. Their policy are not really buyer friendly. They only honor return within one month. Meanwhile Home Deport, Lowe's or Armstrong have lifetime guarantee on all trees and shrubs. In my experience, among all the 20 shrubs that I purchased, 3 of them didn't do well. The majority of them are fine, so it does rise the question, what if something is wrong with the 3 of them? But with their policy, I can never get my money back. Because shrubs die slowly, it only shows signs of symptoms after one month. In case if you were wondering, these 20 shrubs were planted in the same area, with the same amount of sun and water. That to be said, I just think the value here is not that great. I can't say if I can shop confidently here. Especially later on that I found Armstrong were selling the same shrubs for $5 less each. That's $100 for me since I bought 20 shrubs. Lesson learnt. read more

Visiting SD we checked out food spots and plant spots. We got to sneak one in before we headed out. Here was our experience. EXPERIENCE: Parking: Plaza parking and some street parking. When we went is was pretty packed. About 20 slots were all full but we got lucky. Feels: It's in the outer area of Downtown San Diego but still relatively proximal to the action (probably look out for traffic). The spot itself is decent size and stuffed with produce. I dig the shopping mart music in the background. Plants: Succulents, house plants, to produce plants they got it all and all for a reasonable price. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Friendly and professional people. I appreciate it. OVERALL: 4 Stars. Great selections, reasonable prices, and steady vibes. This ain't a hidden gem so best of luck with parking. First off, this nursery is ENORMOUS! There is a large selection of fruit trees, outdoor/indoor plants, cactus, succulents, flowers, herbs and all things to do with gardening. I'm impressed with the selection of items they sell. We spent a good 2 hours looking at trees, pots, and indoor plants. All the plants are well cared for and it shows. Called WA in the morning to place a bare root tree on hold for pick up once I got off work. Mark the GM picked me a nice healthy and well rooted one :) Stopped by to pick up and got to check out all the bare root offerings. There's tons and they all have great root systems that are in wooden containers covered in saw dust so you can see exactly what you're buying. Rich helped me out and service was just phenomenal. I am so excited for my nectazee miniature nectarine to took off :) Houseplant selection is a little bare but they have everything from citrus to roses to staghorn ferns mounted on boards and veggies and more! I have been searching for a Hindu Rope Plant (Hoya Carnosa Compacta) as they are hard to find since they are slow growing. When I was visiting Walter Andersen's Nursery a month ago I mentioned I was looking for this plant. They took my name and number and said they sometimes get these in and will call me. I was so excited when they did call and told me they would hold it for me. So many times people say they will call and you never hear from them again. Not only did they have the plant it's rally quite a beauty. Can't wait to see how this evolves and looking forward to blooms in the future. What can I say about my most favorite nursery of all time in all of San Diego county? I've probably spent over $500 at this location alone and I'm not even mad about it lol First of all their selection of outdoor and indoor plants are seriously top notch. You'll never find plants cared for like they care for their plants! I have found some pretty uncommon house plants from Walter! Like the silver dollar fern which by the way is soooo gorgeous. Gotten a few calatheas like the rattlesnake and the peacock from here as well. And a couple of pothos! You can also ask all the gardening questions you may have with the staff that works here! I like to talk to Ruben their bonsai tree who comes only on weekends but he's helped me pot and prune my Bonsai the correct way. They have ample parking! If you can't find any in their parking lot there is some on the side! And they also have carts perfect for buying like 10 plants lol. Their prices also cannot be beat. If you buy a $20 pothos it's because it's full, lush and beautiful! And trailing! Just gorgeous selections of plants! I go every week, I personally feel like Thursday's is the best day to go! Also if you cannot find something pls ask the store associates! Sometimes they can ask the manager and he will order it for you! I asked for black gold soil and he has ordered it for me! i've been a customer at Andersens for decades. All I can say is that the original Walter Andersen would be very unhappy about the way the place is being run now. I can only chalk it up to poor management. The plants are still excellent. but not for the first time it was a joke when I had to pick up an order that I had called in several days ago. Nobody knew where it was, nobody could find the paperwork or any computer record of it, I called ahead and one person on the phone left me hanging for a long time then came back and said what was your name again? And then somebody else came on the line and said what's your order for? And then somebody else came on the line and said what's your name? Finally I went into the nursery and the person who I had talked to was doing something else and someone else was wandering around trying to find the order. Come on. Then they said --what was your name again? you can decide whether getting really good plants is worth putting up with this kind of ridiculously poor management. read more

This nursery has a good variety of plants, some edible, some not (just take my word for it). They also have many pots in various sizes. Their parking lot can be really chaotic, so get there early (not sure if it'll make a difference since this place seems popular). I recommend parking on Enterprise St and walking up. There's usually a good amount of spots open and it's not a far walk. ** They apparently sell lattes. I personally think their matcha latte looks good, but they also have spirulina. It is left of the cashiers when you walk in from the front. But be weary, they're a little on the pricey side at approx $13ish. A question for Point Loma folks - is that parking lot some ways down from the nursery (you know what I mean) open to the public? The barbed wire fences are a little intimidating. I can't have any outdoor plants as I currently live in a small apartment in Downtown LA, but once my husband and I find a home, we will be coming here for big outdoor plants to add to our future backyard! The indoor plants are all very healthy, although I did wish they had some more options that were pet friendly the day that I visited. I would advise calling in if you are looking for a specific plant to see if they have it in stock. The soil and other planting necessities are super affordable.
