Summary: Great staff and a variety of plants! I decided to go to Hunter's Nursery on a whim when I saw their sign on my way to my podiatrist, who was located nearby. Unfortunately, the plants that I bought at Hunter's did not survive the scorching summer heat but the staff was kind enough to assess the damage and see what they could do to salvage the burnt plants that I brought in. Turns out, I had watered my plants to death in this hot summer heat. What I love about Hunter's Nursery is their unique selection of plants & their price is unbeatable compared to North Park Nursery and Armstrong Gardens. I also can't believe they have been around for 100 years and I just learned about them last month (they need to step up their social media game!). However, I really hope they offer coffee like Terra Bella Nursery or Communal Coffee in North Park but then again, this is a garden shop & not a coffee shop. Stopped by to browse, and it was worth the trip here! They had a good selection of herbs and flowers, native plants, drought tolerant, ornamental landscaping, fruit trees, roses, succulents, and house plants. The plants were very healthy. If you are a plantaholic who loves plant shopping, this property has enough walking space to keep your feet and eyes occupied. I was also happy that the plants were priced very reasonably and often at prices competitive with big box stores. I was also very excited to find hard-to-find plants including Fuchsia Deep Purple with blooms the size of my palm! And Graptoveria Variegated Tibutan! There are some sloped paths and uneven terrain, so if you have any mobility issues, you might want to visit with a shopping buddy in case. Very friendly store staff! read more

We found our nursery 100 years in business!! Says it all Family owned and so nice here to from Mario who help us with a dwarf nectarine tree. Walked up top to all the plants in sections flowers & roses and trees to succulents & cacti. We found lantern plant and heavenly bamboo, plus 3 more plus a air plant too. The owner was there to greet us and answer questions too. But the daughter was the one to help with all other answers too help load my truck up with lots of soil and tree. Plus a bug spray. Great place for plants. The staff is very helpful and the variety of plants reflect what actually grows in the area (unlike what you'll see at Home Depot and stuff). The value/price is reasonable. They claim to be the best nursery in San Diego, and they are right. For example, compare to [Home Depot and Lowe's = root-bound plants and look great at the store but then they die or don't grow when you take them home.] Then there's Hunter's Nursery = *actually* healthy plants that are substantially bigger than Home Depot for the same price. Extremely helpful and friendly staff. Also the soil is a way way better price at Hunter's than at home depot and lowe's. EB Stone Big Harvest soil 3 cubic feet for like 14 bucks. That's about the price of the same amount of miracle grow at home depot, and personally, I like it more. It feels so good. read more

First and foremost, this is just a really cool place. If you look around in the "lobby" (checkout area), there are pictures of the nursery throughout the decades. I recently asked an employee about the photos, and he gave me some quick background about the family-owned nursery and its history of OVER 100 YEARS. Really cool. Hunter's offers both flowers/botanicals/etc.- but also a great selection of fruits, vegetables, citrus trees, etc. I have only been gardening for a couple of years, so when I went to Hunter's, I was a bit embarrassed to ask REALLY novice questions about what I should plant, when I should plant it, the frequency of watering, etc. etc... every staff member I have spoken with has been really helpful (and patient of my ignorance as a novice). If you live in the area, this is your nursery. I will be an ongoing customer here for as long as they're open (hopefully another 100 years). read more

It is always a pleasure to patronize a family run business, and Hunter's Nursery is just such a place. It is tucked away in Lemon Grove/Spring Valley, not far from a monumental towering freeway interchange. I always know when I visit the nursery that Mario or Gustavo will be there, patrolling the grounds with assurance and helping customers. My favorite tree in the world is a Tipuana Tipu, a delicate and lacy tree with a beautiful crown, and I have bought all of them at Hunter's. The price of these trees in a 24-inch box may be slightly cheaper at Evergreen Nursery, but the quality of the tree at Hunter's is superior, as is the service. In fact, ten of these magnificent trees grace the front of my property, and Mario is headed to my house on Thursday to deliver and plant another one! read more

House plants have seemingly taken over my house and dare I say that they're more needy than our dog? There, I said it. Phillip, you nine foot fiddle-leaf fig, you and all your friends are a lot of work. That being said, it's so nice to have a home full of greenery. New neighborhoods (we moved in August) means finding new local spots and a new nursery was on the list of businesses to locate. Well, I think we found a winner! While not overflowing with inventory the plants that they have are really well taken care of and we were able to find a few plants perfect for our predetermined spots. I also grabbed a few small basil plants that have already been repotted and will certainly die very soon... I always kill basil. Long story short, we loved Hunter's nursery. What other place can you go to where the staff are so knowledgeable and friendly? They have a great assortment of ground cover, full sun, shade and indoor plants. We've been here a couple of times, and the last time we went to buy a larger plumeria tree. We spotted a few we liked and one of the staff is actually the one who grows these in his backyard! How cool is that? It was amazing, he gave us all these care tips to help grow our new plumeria to be big and healthy. I was traveling along and found this place by accident. Since I m always looking for another alternative to the big boxes like Home Depot, this was a lucky find. I didn't realize they have parking in the front as well as in the back! Mixing soils are in the back parking. There s a section for everything and everyone. These alternatives are so much better than what s sold at Home Depot. The helper had some good inputs on the type of soil to mix. M'y cashier gave me a little historic about the nursery. It s been set up by her great grand father as an orchard. They just reached the 100 years mark in 2019. So, people... let s give this little jem some support. Bay/ inland property has plenty of flashy, colorful flowers, decoratives, native plants, small specialty plants, with a decent selection of fruit trees for a small- medium sized, nursery. Hunter's probably would benefit from more publicity and a bigger sign. Still our new favorite So. A very quaint and well-loved nursery! Their setup is both well-organized and easy to browse. I was looking for a nice indoor plant, and they have a small but diverse selection of houseplants. Moreover, all the plants I looked at were in great condition. I purchased a Peace Lily, and the woman that helped me at checkout gave me lots of tips and advice for taking care of my new plant. She was super well-informed and it showed that she genuinely cares about the plants at the nursery. I saw some reviews and Yelp about Hunter's Nursery and decided to swing by and see what they had. The layout is pretty easy to follow and I like the fact that they have a section for indoor plants. However, after looking at some of the pricing it was a little too expensive for me. Oh where to start? We bought succulents for our wedding (Feb 29, 2020) centerpieces from Hunter's and they were a hit! We were on a tight budget and I don't like buying flowers that will eventually die. We needed 14 centerpieces. So many, happy, healthy, vibrant choices to choose from!! The folks at the helm were equally happy, healthy and vibrant. We went back a couple of days after the wedding to buy more for a special gift centerpiece and plan to go back. This is my favorite nursery. It's a small family-owned business. I have purchased the majority of my plants and trees from here. My plants take well to replanting. I have never had any of their plants go into shock or die on me. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and seem to enjoy helping their consumers. This is a great nursey with great customer service. If I can give them 10 stars, I would. I've been to multiple nurseries and Hunter's is by far my favorite in terms of plant selection, quality, price, and service! They carry a ton of trees and plants that are hard to find elsewhere. We wanted a Bronze Loquat and they were the only ones in the area that had it at the time (in fact, another nursery told me to check out Hunter's because they knew Hunter's carries a large selection of unique trees and plants). Their trees and plants are absolutely beautiful and at great price points. And the staff are the best part of it all - they are so kind, knowledgeable, and patient. I needed a lot of help with picking out plants, getting special plants ordered, and getting everything delivered because I didn't have a truck. Hunter's is a friendly, affordable multi-generational family-owned business. This is the real deal: Two family members helped us with selecting some shrubs, vines and potting mix. I also got to hear some teaser stories about the history of this nursery going back to the 40's and earlier. Zero "sales" or pressure. There's a nice selection of trees, shrubs, herbs, vines, and flowers - especially roses. Prices are quite good! We picked up a tall redwood trellis for $15 and I'm kind of amazed by that. They jumped in to help load all the stuff in our vehicle. It's a total Zen experience just to stroll and mill around this nursery for awhile. It was a good outing for our toddler son who really enjoyed all the trotting around among the plants. (If it helps to visualize: Think of the complete opposite of your last Home Depot experience!)
