Beautiful building and well maintained and great atmosphere Amazing staff who invest in a good experience for tenants.

The building is very safe and centrally located to grocery stores, Target, etc. and has cute resident events, which is great, but the rent is very overpriced for what you actually get. Almost $2k for a view of the other building, no in-unit washer/dryer, and older appliances compared to the other buildings in the complex? No thank you. There are plenty of other buildings that will give you more bang for your buck or if you are ok with this price range, there are other buildings in East Liberty that are better quality. The management office also feels that it isn't an invasion of privacy to schedule tours for prospective residents for the exact unit you want WHILE you are living there as soon as you mention you're moving out. So unprofessional. You get 24 hours notice before a tour. Why give notice at all if you're just going to show up anyway? I've never seen this done in other buildings I've lived in before. It makes the vibe more business-like than actually living in a community. All they care about is your money. I really do like Walnut Capital overall, but the Walnut on Highland property itself is overpriced and unprofessional in their policies and communication with residents. read more

Recently moved in! I highly recommend this place and I love living here. Move in process - literally the most wonderful/least stressful move-ins! The building manager (Courtney) set aside a parking spot for us on the day of the move-in right in front of the apartment. She was super nice and helpful by supplying us with push carts. We even got a move-in gift full of Anthropologie goodies (soaps, lotions, kitchen towels, and a gift card). She also mentioned we could take however long to move-in unlike some other apartments that make you stop moving in at a certain time. The building - so clean all the time and it's so nice/new. It was recently renovated so its super modern. Each floor is cleaned daily. The trash chute room smells great and it's literally the cleanest trash chute room ever. There's a trash chute and two washers and dryers on each floor. Other notes - Card entry instead of keys. Free parking spot included. 5 min walk to Target, Wholefoods, Chipotle, and key Shadyside food places such as Madmex, Noodle Head, and BRGR. There are social events thrown too (catered viewing of the world cup, home decorating tips held by Anthropologie designers, etc...) Only con was that there were some unclean parts of the apartment I just moved into (all easily cleaned so no big deal). Also some some dead electrical sockets. I moved in during the summer after a long search and can say I am extremely happy with the apartment. I now have about 6 months of experience in this building - and only have positive things about the experience. The move in process was a breeze, working with Courtney from the front office was amazing - made sure we had everything we needed to move in smoothly. After moving in, things were still great - there is laundry on every floor, common spaces are always clean and welcoming, and packages are kept safely in the mail room (you get an email when packages arrive). The gym and office room have the basic necessities. If there there is a maintenance issue, the management team is quick to resolve it and notify you when the work order is complete. The finishes inside the apartment are all new, and the heating/cooling system works great. The one downside is that there is construction happening right outside my window in the mornings/afternoons. It also means I lost my view since the neighboring building now is taller than my floor :( Overall, I am quite happy with the apartment and recommend it! read more

When I found the Walnut on Highland building would be open this summer, in time for me to move, I couldn't believe my luck. I'd been living in an old house a quarter mile away in Shadyside and always dreamed about what a great location that place under construction would be. And when I found out it was not only pet friendly (!), but also affordable, I knew I didn't need to look anywhere else. Moving in, I was not disappointed. The apartment is spacious and well appointed with appliances. I particularly love the open kitchen. The building utilities are great as well - washer and dryer can be paid with a credit card and the gym is full of high tech equipment. This is my first time living in a managed apartment and Walnut Capital has been great. All my requests are handled quickly, the common areas are kept clean, staff is always friendly, and they even throw parties for the residents. Finally, the location is amazing. Access to great bars and restaurants within stumbling distance, bus lines right out side to downtown, close to the main roads, but yet still fairly quiet for city living. I highly recommend this building! read more

The apartments are smaller but it just takes some creativity to arrange the furniture in a functional way. The staff is very friendly and the amenities are fantastic. They seem to have gatherings every month in the recreation room, which is a nice chance to meet the neighbors. I was very luck to be the first to rent and have to say I was overall impressed with the move in process. I do have some complaints though. They seemed to have forgotten me around the holidays when they passed out candy jars to most of the people in the building (not really a big deal). Also, when it came time to move out (bought a house) I gave them more time then they needed, which was a disadvantage because I had to be out of my apartment frequently (four times in one week) so that they could show it (a problem when you work nightshift and have to sleep during the day). The last thing is the noise. My floor has two apartments that have dogs. The one is down the hall and barks for hours during the day and the other is right next door and barks every few hours. I have complained several times for the one unit but nothing has been done (several months this has gone on). The noise from the dumpsters is also a problem if you are looking for an -06 or -07 unit. Overall, I liked living here; however, I'm very happy to be moving out so that I can sleep better during my off hours. read more

So I am a lifelong Pittsburgher.... I pretty much know the lay of the land. While weighing the pros and cons and purchasing a home vs. renting, we decided to rent, but were hoping to find a very nice, newer loft style apartment. We found want we were looking for with Walnut on Highland. Pittsburghers: The cost of this apartment is on the high-end for Pittsburgh. Transplants: The cost of this apartment is probably very affordable, especially if you are coming from a city bigger than Pittsburgh (i.e. NYC, Philly, LA, Miami, etc). You get what you pay for. To us, the price was worth having a brand new place, with great proximity to shopping, cultural activities and the local universities. We have no problem paying for convenience--so when the opportunity arose, we were first on the list. POSITIVES: **The entire office staff is wonderful. Can't say that enough. They are extremely responsive. **The cleaning and maintenance crew is amazing. Dennis, who is over this group, is super helpful, and responded to every question we had. The cleaning crew keeps the buildings spotless, and they are all extremely friendly. **One of the best parts about the building is meeting new people. Many young professionals and grad students (shout out to CMU) are here -- and everyone is extremely friendly. **All of the amenities are wonderful: the security, the office being able to receive packages for us, the media room (where we have occasional residential gatherings), the gym, the elevators (hard to find in old Pittsburgh)--all positives. **Great insulation: You can't hear ANYTHING from neighbors above, below or around. Outside noise is minimal--great windows. (14 of them in my place--it's pretty beautiful. IJS) **The pet relief area is a great (late) addition. They even provide poop bags and a trash can! Very thoughtful. HOWEVER...there are some things that I do wish Walnut Capital would have thought twice about as they were building these buildings. I can co-sign EVERYTHING Brian S. said in his review, but since I live in the Wallace Building (the shorter of the two buildings) I'll add a few additional items here: NOT SO POSITIVES: **All of the apartments are different price points, but living in the Wallace Building, we have a slightly higher price point than most other apartments in the Highland. One thing that irks us in the Wallace Building is that our lobby area seems like an afterthought compared to the beautiful attention that the lobby in the Highland building received. I had hoped this would have changed, but 7 months in it hasn't been spruced up yet. **We should be able to buzz people into the building. At this price point, I would go as far as saying we should be able to buzz people in while looking at a closed-circuit broadcast. **The parking garage is a HUGE plus, however distribution of parking spaces doesn't seem fair. Only people in the penthouse can park on the first floor (I was told). **They should have created a passage way or tunnel from the garage straight to both buildings. Right now, carrying groceries in from the garage is like running through a maze. I have to swipe my card EIGHT times to get in my place. Try doing that with a weeks' worth of groceries and I promise you a few curse words will come out of your mouth. **Laminate floor is pretty, but Brian S. is right---it's cheap. A few pieces in our place peeled up. Ditto about the wall paint--any little nick and you can see black. **The outlets. You have to consult the D-line of the Pittsburgh Steelers to plug in anything. Ugh. **There's only one exit--the front. Even though there's stairwells to the back that lead out to the back of the building--we're not allowed to go out that way. Inconvenient if you are catching a CMU shuttle or walking to Target. ....Fort Knox. All in all, Walnut on Highland is a great place to live. Helpful hint: if you are considering moving here, be sure to check out ALL of the apartment options. Each apartment has a different lay out. read more

I've lived at Walnut on Highland for 7 months now and it is by far the best apartment complex I have ever lived in. First off, I love the location in East Liberty! I walk to Target and Whole Foods all the time and there are so many great restaurants to choose from (Tana Ethiopian, Two Sisters, and Noodlehead being my faves). I would've gained a ton of weight if not for the gym in the building. It's not huge, but it does the job for what I need. There's treadmills, stairmaster, bikes, rower, and a variety of dumbbells/kettlebells. I grab coffee from the lobby at least three times a week and they always have cups and lids out along with a variety of teas. This building is extremely well-maintained. I have never encountered any messes in the time I've lived here, but have seen newly mopped areas multiple times - a testament to how quickly the cleaning staff takes care of the building. Maintenance is also incredible. I've put in a few very low priority requests (even writing in the work order to emphasize how low priority the request was) and they still attended to most of my requests within 48 hours if not sooner. All of the building staff are so friendly, giving a wave or smile whenever you walk past. The security guys are great - I've bothered them multiple times at ridiculous hours when needing to leave a key for a pet sitter and they've always helped me out happily and energetically. They have never made me feel as if I were inconveniencing them and I appreciate that so much. The leasing office girls are also amazing. Any question or request I have ever sent their way has been dealt with immediately and in such an organized fashion. I never fear that something will fall through the cracks because they are so thorough in communicating with their residents and with each other. I had the pleasure of initially signing my lease with the help of Kahla Cerqua and she made the entire process easy and smooth. I was nervous moving out here from California, but she took care of everything and my apartment was perfect and ready to go when I arrived at 11 pm on a Thursday after driving for 3 days across the country. And this attention to detail and extra care did not disappear after I became a tenant. I just had an issue with being able to get my cat sitter into my apartment this weekend and Kahla communicated with me after-hours to figure out a way to coordinate with my cat sitter properly. She is absolutely priceless. This is an obnoxiously long review but it is long overdue and very well deserved. I've renewed my lease for another year and am looking forward to 1.5 years of bliss living in this gorgeous place. read more

After some frustrating apartment hunting, I stumbled into the Walnut on Highland. Finally, something with new finishes, open layouts, high ceilings, a nice walk-able location, and still has some old-school charm and architecture. The staff is fantastic, friendly, professional and helpful. They've worked hard to ensure that I'm happy, and are quite responsive to issues. I had some noise problems with HVAC that required substantial trial and error, but they were persistent until it was resolved. The neighbors are friendly, fun, and... neighborly. Its nice that the management often has social events for the tenants so you can meet each other. Utilities are pretty inexpensive. I have a 2br, and the highest the heating/electric bill went (with Ethical Electric Green Energy) in January was 740kWh, about $100. Not bad! Water is fixed and included with rent as a fee. However, the building is not without some quirks and issues: * There aren't lights where there really ought to be - like in a dark, isolated hallway closet where you can't see your clothes. Or above where the dining room table should go! * The floors aren't real hardwoods, they're cheap laminate. At least I don't have to worry about scratching them. * The paint on the walls somehow marks with the slightest scratch or brush up against it. Its like they put on a single coat, and the paint has carbon or something to show wherever it was touched. * The elevator has a beautiful glass wall in it, yet the windows to the exterior are covered in either bird poop or concrete droppings. Visitors are like "OOOOhhh!" followed by "Eeeeewwww". Its kind of embarrassing. * The place is locked up like Fort Knox. Its nice that it is secure, but holy cow, its super annoying if you're trying to host a party. You or somebody have to go down the elevator to let somebody in EVERY TIME. There is no way to buzz somebody up. Going from the lobby entrance to your unit requires at least 3 badge swipes. Garage to the unit requires FIVE badge swipes! (Garage entrance, garage vestibule, lobby vestibule, lobby, elevator). I curse out loud every time I have to walk in carrying something. Really, they need to make a real security desk in the lobby. * Lots of construction noises due to East Liberty Transit Center renovations. This usually starts around 7:30am every day. This isn't in the property's control, but something to consider about location. With East Liberty projects scheduled all around us, I don't expect outside noise to be getting better within the next few years. * The pet fee is insanely high. 1/2 a month rent for a cat?! I paid it, because I love my cat, but there is no way she could possibly do that much damage to an apartment for any amount of time. It isn't even refundable. Silly. Overall, I'm happy with the place and the problems above are most definitely "first world problems", but for the price premium that we pay for a luxury apartment, I expect a little more. Until The Odeon, Eastside III, and Bakery Square 2.0 projects are completed, this or a few private loft condos are basically your only option for a contemporary place in the neighborhood. read more

Some negatives, quality of paint/floors was a little surprising and wonder what it will look like in a few years.... Very happy with Walnut on Highland overall. Renting in the Wallace building of the complex (the short building, but with larger square footage for the most part). Moved here from out of state and the management office was quite good with communication and accommodating changes and questions I had. It was fantastic that I could find a building that would take a dog and was NOT a small, run-down, dirty apartment. No carpet is great for having a dog. Good kitchen, with nice appliances and stone counter top. Love the windows. Personnel here are very nice and helpful and quick to respond to issues. We had discovered a leak under the kitchen sink and it was fixed by the next morning. Perks include a small fitness center, package delivery, media room, social events. Compared to everything I saw in Shadyside for a dog-friendly apartment, it couldn't be beat and I think it is priced appropriately. However, as another reviewer mentioned, the pet fee is quite high ($700). If even a portion of that was a returnable deposit, rather than fee, that would be awesome. And I would agree about the excessive amount of locked doors. I expect to have to badge into the main part of the building, but to have to badge into simply the stairwell of the parking garage... completely unnecessary. 1 parking spot was including, but not willing to negotiate on a second spot for less than the $120/month asking. Awesome location too. Overall, would definitely recommend. read more

The units are very nice and the location is perfect (busway to downtown is nearby, several grocery stores are within walking distance). Gym and parking garage are very convenient. The management team is wonderful. Any maintenance requests are dealt with right away. It's also really nice having a management office right in the building. read more

I moved into walnut on highland last august and have loved everything about it! I moved from NYC and was pleased to find an affordable place with awesome amentities in pittsburgh! As a graduate student I also love that there are so many buses in the vicinity for school, and that walnut on highland has complimentary parking for residents. I moved into this property over the summer (July 2013) and have really enjoyed living here. Staff has been great and very responsive to any needs that I have. I really enjoy the social aspect the building offers- it's definitely a good mix of enough events to have options, without being overly intrusive. The building is well kept, quiet and clean.
