The food is absolutely perfect old southern cuisine. I had blackened catfish with spinach and sweet potato casserole. Huge serving of catfish, perfectly cooked and seasoned spicy, but not burn your mouth spicy. Service is good, but was a little slower than when I came here previously. This is in restored 1880 home. So the ambiance matches the food. My only gripe was that they run out of many of the homemade deserts if you are going late. read more

The sweet potato casserole was incredible, rich and comforting without being overly sweet, and the green beans were seasoned just right. Everything tasted fresh and homemade. Our kids ordered the chicken fingers and honestly they might have been even better than the fried chicken, which is saying something. We were told we had to check this place out, and while we were out walking the city, we stumbled upon it, and boy, are we glad we did!! We were told about their fried chicken, and that's what we got, it did not disappoint!! We started out with some fried green tomatoes, and they were absolutely perfect!! We had to have ours with ranch, as I'm allergic to shellfish, and it normally comes with a crab sauce, but they were delicious!! They gave us the perfect small peach cobbler to finish our meals, and it was one of the very best cobblers we've ever had. Our serve was so sweet, and made sure our glasses of some of the best sweet tea were never empty.. The place was packed, but comfortable and clean. I always have to wait a minute before posting reviews for restaurants as special as Walnut Hills in charming and historic Vicksburg, Mississippi. I have to think carefully about saying everything that I want to say about such an extraordinary place. These are the times that I realize what my Yelp reviews mean to me. They aren't just reviews for me. They are a travelogue of experiences that I enjoy looking back on from time to time. Walnut Hills is one of those experiences. We did not make reservations but we arrived at about 10:15 (they open at 11:00) on a Sunday just knowing that Sunday lunch is always a big deal and that there would be a big crowd. Well, when we arrived there was ample room in the parking lot and we parked behind the old house. When we stepped up onto the porch there was a sweet little family of three waiting in rocking chairs and chatting by the front door. Of course they beat us to the line. We spoke and they told us they have a standing reservation every Sunday for lunch. What a treat! I wish I had a place like this nearby to eat every Sunday! Well, quite a line developed and everyone was friendly and polite. Of course, there were many regulars in line and we just had to ask everyone what they order. When the doors opened at 11:00 we walked in and to our surprise, a table was already set with iced teas for the sweet family we met at the front door. Man, they know how to treat their regulars! I got the sense that many of the folks here were regulars. That is always a good sign. We managed to find a small two top near the back with a nice view of the charming bar, other diners and the impressive rapid pace of the servers. The service is impeccable and those servers must be "getting their steps in" is all I can say. They move so efficiently throughout the restaurant and waste no time taking your orders and moving through the swinging doors to get those orders in. We were sitting near the doors to the kitchen and enjoyed hearing the guy in the kitchen yelling out the different orders, "Chicken Dark! Spinach and Onions! Cornbread Dressing!" What an exciting environment. First, we were served a bit of bread with rolls and cornbread with butter that was so delicious and I was so proud that the cornbread was savory and not sweet. So, next we had the salad course and I ordered the tomato aspic and my husband ordered the cole slaw that appeared to include mustard (delish!) Yes, I ordered tomato aspic and I know it makes you think of what a southern grandma used to make in the 1950s. It was soooooo creamy and delicious with the most wonderful texture. I guess I need to figure out how to duplicate because I am thinking summertime needs that dish! We ordered dark and white meat fried chicken, black eye peas, mustard greens, cornbread dressing and spinach and onions. We ordered the lemon square and apple cobbler as desserts. Every little thing we ate was just what you would expect at a southern grandma's house. It was all very good and seasoned perfectly. I just love their fried chicken. It was the stuff a foodie's dreams are made of. I enjoyed the hunting theme of the restaurant and thought the atmosphere was perfect. I hope I get the opportunity to try this special place again. I'm not sure if there was another entrance but if you need walking or if stairs are an issue, this may not be a good choice in a place to eat. My husband and I both had the fried chicken special. It came with a choice of sides and a basket of biscuits and cornbread muffins. The chicken was good and so were the biscuits and muffins. None of the sides were noteworthy. Hostess and waitstaff must have been nearing the end of their shifts...just trying to make it through their workday. Customers at this point seemed to be an annoyance. Walnut Hills has won the award for the best fried chicken in the state for several years from Mississippi magazine. That is what brought me here for dinner on a slow Monday night and I am so glad I did. This restaurant is located in a charming old home near the downtown district. Parking is behind the restaurant or on the neighborhood streets. With a front patio that has rocking chairs you enter the home/restaurant and seated by the hostess in one of several small dining rooms. They also have a room that contains a charming small bar. I ordered their famous Walnut Hills fried chicken choosing a mix of white and dark for $22. The meal also comes with 2 side dishes. I chose rice and gravy along with sautéed green beans. First to come out was some warm bread and butter that was so pleasing to eat. It was simple yet satisfying. The entree arrived about 15 minutes later. I started with the rice and dark brown gravy and knew instantly that this was going to be a very good meal. The gravy had a lot of rich flavor and it only got better after that. Those green beans were simply delicious and told me that the chef knew how to really cook. Finally to the chicken. My mix of 3 pieces were a breast, thigh and wing. Was it going to live up to the hype? The side dishes were excellent but would the bird be too? As I ate each piece I quickly realized that fried chicken cannot be cooked any better than this. Absolutely delicious! A medium battered crust and every piece juicy including the breast meat. All I could think of was perfect, perfect, perfect. Nashville Hot Chicken seems to be the rage nowadays and I have found it difficult to find very good Southern Fried Chicken. Well my friends it's here at Walnut Hills. Traveling through Vicksburg we found this wonderful jewel of a restaurant! From the moment we walked in we felt so welcome! Tanya was our waitress she took excellent care of us. We ordered the Grilled Shrimp and Grits and Fried Chicken as it was recommended highly by other customers. Both were outstanding! I will saw we were so impressed! The Grilled Shrimp and Grits were amazing, I have never had better!! Fried Chicken was perfection, meat was flavorful and cooked to perfection, not at all greasy!! The home is historic and added a beautiful charm to the ambiance of the meal. Unfortunately, the meal was decent but definitely not rave worthy. We ordered the FRIED GREEN TOMATOES with a CRAWFISH CREAM SAUCE on the side. The FGT were excellent. Crispy, not greasy at all. The garnish of diced bell peppers were useless, in my opinion, and the sauce was warm and very thick; it was okay. I also ordered the FRENCH ONION SOUP, as this is a favorite of mine, but it was brought to the table cold. We both had the FRIED CHICKEN and honestly, I have had better. Two of my pieces were a bit dry and then the other thigh was very moist. The TURNIP GREENS were very well cooked and seasoned just right. The MASHED POTATOES AND GRAVY were delicious. My guest has sides of ASPARAGUS which was rubbery and the SWEET POTATO and the skin was inedible. For dessert we chose the PECAN PIE and the ITALIAN CREAM CAKE. Both were very good. The biggest disappointment was the service, the timing of our food, and the frustrating response when you received when you questioned anything. We received our food about 10 minutes before we received our appetizers and when I asked about them, I was snapped at that they were short handed and doing the best they could. The most spectacular attraction for this restaurant is right up front on the inside door at the back entrance: the cake display! Of course, the entries are very good too but the cakes and coffee are the immediate visual big draw that reels you in, as it did for us, in part. Our friends, the hubs and I are still talking about this meal. It was so good and our server was awesome. To start, we were served these magic little biscuits that were like nothing I've ever had before. Soft and pillowy with a nice buttery crust, I could have eaten just these and been very happy. We ordered the French onion, corn and crab soups and the tomato aspic. Our friends were happy with their soups and although I am glad to have tried the tomato aspic, it wasn't my cup of tea so to speak. What was very much my cup of tea was the incredible blackened catfish I ordered. Holy heck was this good. Paired with a small baked sweet potato and green beans, things were real good. There was also fried chicken ordered by my hubs and a friend and a chicken fried steak ordered by another friend. Everyone was happy with their meal. Dessert was insane - we ordered a slice of hummingbird cake, a slice of coconut cake and a slice of pecan pie. The slices of cake were soooo good and absolutely enormous. If you ever wanted to eat in an 1880 house with unique and decadent food, this is it. The corn and crab bisque is exceptional and creamy. The chicken salad is not run of the mill. The cole slaw was very sweet and I detected hints of curry powder. The onion rings are homemade and awesome. The chocolate pie had a lot of whipped topping but was delicious anyway.
