This antebellum mansion from 1830 survived the American Civil War. There are 10 guest rooms but we came to the restaurant for brunch . We were able to make a reservation on Open Table. Joseph Emory Davis, patriarchal brother to Confederate Pres Jefferson Davis, the owner of Hurricane Plantation in Warren County, Jefferson Davis made his final speech from Anchuca's front balcony, near the Vicksburg Battlefield. We got here early and parked in the small parking lot. We wandered around all of the beautiful rooms from the period. We were seated in the library. Brunch entrées included a small salad or fruit cup, and a dessert. We enjoyed our salads with balsamic dressing. For an entrée, I chose seafood, gumbo, and my husband, the shrimp and grits. The cheesy, creamy grits with the best I ever tasted, and my husband doesn't like shrimp, but he devoured them. We're trying both desserts, the warm peach cobbler alamode and the white chocolate bread pudding were obscene. Our meal was delicious, service, impeccable, and the setting spectacular. read more

A charming bed and breakfast offers the distinction of being the former home to the elder brother of Jefferson Davis, Confederate President for the duration of the American Civil War. Approximately a mile from the Vicksburg battlefield, the house sits high on a hill that would have had direct line of vision to the Mississippi River during the war. The house still bears the scars of battle shrapnel but was ultimately spared. The buildings are an impressive representation of Southern living for the well to do in the late 1800s. The upper porch served as the location for Jefferson Davis last public speech after the war. The restaurant serves a nice breakfast to boarders and a more elegant option for dinner with a full menu. Pleasant service in a cozy dining area makes for a great experience in this historic home. P.S. My visit to Anchuca Mansion was so nice !! The mansion itself is absolutely beautiful, and you can really tell how much thought went into decorating it. They offer house tours for $10.00, which was well worth it! The staff were so kind and friendly! I got to chat with the owners, Sam and Anna Kate, and they couldn't have been more wonderful. The food was delicious. The rolls came out piping hot, and they were so good. I ordered the shrimp and grits, and it was so amazing, an absolute treat! While I didn't have a cocktail myself, their cocktail menu was very nice! Their wine list was also extensive!! Something for everyone. I also got a sneak peek at some of the rooms, and they looked so charming. I would definitely make it a point to stay here next time I visit Vicksburg. Overall a 10/10 experience! From the moment you enter this beautiful house, you are greeted by the most cheerful people. We did not have reservations for Sunday brunch, but they were able to accommodate us. I recommend making a reservation for brunch or any other special occasion. You will be seated in one of the elegant rooms in the home and enjoy the antiquities and soft music as you dine. The staff are delightful people you will really enjoy chatting with. The food was delicious. There were three of us, and we all had something different and sampled each other's food. The creamed spinach is one of my favorite items, but the asparagus bisque was also very nice. Their prices are more than reasonable for a fine dining experience. The service is almost as good as their in-house made rolls! I love the filet, but could eat my weight in their creamed spinach! Loved my experience at Restaurant Anchuca! The historic house is beautiful, and is worth the visit! There's street parking in front of the house, and you'll walk up the driveway to get to the restaurant in the back of the main house. I visited for brunch and called earlier that morning for a reservation. I really enjoyed the coffee, it had a delicious flavor and I wished I asked what roast and beans they use! I started with a salad, which was delicious and I really liked all of the toppings. For my main entree, I ordered the etoufee. I loved the variety of seafood in it and I could've had so much more of that amazing bread! It was so warm and fluffy! I finished with the peach cobbler, which after all of that food I was pretty full, but I made sure to save room for it because of how good it was. The service was amazing, and the waitress was so friendly and attentive. For all of the food, quality, and service, I thought the price was extremely reasonable for brunch. I wish I tried this place sooner, because I would've definitely visited more times! Anchuca: Choctaw word for "happy home" This antebellum mansion was originally constructed in the late 1820s, but was later upgraded with Greek revival styling in the late 1840s by wealthy Vicksburg residents, Jane and Victor Wilson. The Wilsons and their seven children (6 girls and 1 boy) survived the 47-day siege of the city only to succumb to family tragedy just weeks after Vicksburg's surrender. Their only son and infant daughter died due to the unsanitary conditions and malnutrition endured during the siege. The house survived the Siege and was used as a hospital after the battle. With the death of Mr. Wilson in 1865, Mrs. Wilson, overwrought with emotions and economic ruin, sold the property. Joseph Emory Davis (Jefferson Davis' older brother) lived in the house from 1868 until his death on September 18, 1870 at the age of 87. Jefferson Davis gave one of his last speeches to the people of Vicksburg from this balcony in 1869. read more

Wow. Superbly superb. We decided to take a road trip from Nola to Vicksburg. And arrived just in time to search for a place to have dinner. We could have picked a roof top place with no air conditioning in 95 degree plus weather with an hour wait. Or we could have picked a place where a grocery store size parking lot was filled to capacity with people waiting in line with no masks. Sorry. Social distancing is important to my health. So we chose this delightful place. Quiet, the ambient noise was so low we could have an actual conversation, Quaint. What could be more quaint the. To eat in an Anti Bellum style cafe? But was the food good? Oh my yes! I would have to say it rivaled some of New Orleans top places to eat. We had the Pork tenderloin with creamed spinach. It was perfect. Every bite better then the last. The sweetness and savory combination was balanced perfectly. Even the dinner rolls were baked to perfection. The desert peach cobbler was as delectable as the dinner. And the waitress was on point and as knowledgeable as if she had prepared each morsel herself. And honestly the price was not all that bad for the quality and the quantity of the meal. Maybe we waxed overly nostalgic, dining amidst such history of the old South, as our dinner at the cafe in the Anchuca Mansion in Vicksburg seemed idyllic. But, it wasn't just the sumptuous antebellum ambience, our dinner there was truly amazing. The dinning room is intimate, small, but elegant. They are renown for their "butter knife" tender petite fillets. I ordered the 8 oz., with an excellent demi glacé, mashed potatoes and gravy with pan fried Brussels sprouts. It was relatively simple fair, but everything was exceptionally flavorful. My wife went for the Chilean sea bass over a rice pilaf with creamed spinach - also excellent. Their wine selection was small but quite good and moderately priced. We topped it off with their Bonzo Cake!! 3 layers - gluten free brownie, mascarpone and whip cream, then chocolate mousse. Drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauce! Whoa was it good! Overall, our tour of the mansion and dinner were a highlight of our visit to Vicksburg. There were 3 of us and we were told the chef didn't have enough food for us. It was 7 PM on a rainy Monday night. There were several tables empty in full view. I ordered Filet mignon Eggs Benedict* which came with a side of cheese grits and fresh fruit. This dish was divine. Just cooked to perfection and oh so delicious. Even though I was pretty stuffed, I decided to make a pig out of myself and had dessert. The trifle was delightful as well. I'd opt for the white chocolate bread pudding next time. On September 2nd my wife and I, accompanied by our little dog, had the most wonderful dining experience at Cafe Anchuca. Our server, Bailey, was so gracious and a joy to experience. Here preparation of my wife's mint julip was perfect. The meals were divine, and the seafood gumbo alone was worth going there. My wife had their salmon once mashed sweet potatoes and I had the blackened catfish. Their chef truly has talent as everything high quality and prepared by someone with great cooking skills. We will return and we highly recommend Cafe Anchuca. read more

First time dining out in Vicksburg since the beginning of the pandemic. Had a very good meal at Anchuca with a glitch or two that can be corrected on our next visit (and we WILL go back). I had brought them a letter last week detailing my wife's dietary limitations as they pertained to Anchuca's menu and received prompt confirmation that they could indeed accommodate her needs. When we arrived, they were well prepared as to what they could and could not do. We had a corner table in the main dining room, which is a very attractive space looking out onto the beautiful garden area, adequately social distanced from the next table, and our server masked at all times. I had the catfish, Hoppin' John, and creamed spinach, all of which were delicious. Our 97-year old guest complained about no menus (because of COVID), so our server printed copies for us from their website. Our guest had the chicken piccata with fettucine and said it was perfectly seasoned and well cooked. My wife's filet and green beans, however, were oversalted almost to the point of not being edible. We think this occurred because they wanted to add some additional flavor to substitute for some of the customary spices that she could not eat. Since I see that others have offered similar criticism I would advise you when placing your order to specifically state that you would like a minimum of salt on your food, or perhaps even none at all and then add your own at your table. Our server was terrific about everything: friendly, understanding, knowledgeable about their menu, and very efficient. We had a good, reasonably priced bottle of Malbec with our meal and coffee afterwards. Our tab for 3 including wine and tax was about $120. Portions are generous and our meal well worth the price paid, which is in line with other local restaurants that we frequented before the pandemic. With just a little less salt, which we will request next time, this would be an excellent dining value. read more

Cafe Anchuca, part of the bed and breakfast by the same name is only open Thursday-Sunday to the general public but offers some of the finest cuisine in the Vicksburg area. Your two excellent hosts Tom and Chris, along with their wonderful staff, will make you feel at home in their glass-pane enclosed and brick-floor cafe. The menu features a fairly standard set of appetizers and main courses with a focus on southern cuisine, but the preparation is excellent. Cafe Anchuca is a wonderful example of the fine quality one may find behind a relatively nondescript explanation here in the south. Of note, the Cafe' Fillet ranks among the top steaks I have tasted - and can easily be cut with a butter knife I might add. I'd also suggest the Vick Burger, Asparagus Bisque, and Seafood Gumbo - just be sure you have a side of cheese grits served with your meal. But save room. Cafe Anchuca's desert menu is on par with the main courses. Enjoy the Anchuca Bonzo Cake, the Cafe' Cheesecake, and be sure to ask for the weekly specials - with a side of their excellent coffee. For those visiting Vicksburg for the Battlefield or on business, Cafe Anchuca is a must... a culinary experience set in the heart of the historic Springfield neighborhood. read more

My review is for dinner on a weeknight (no overnight stay at the B&B). First impressions, were impressive! Beautiful setting in a historic neighborhood, nice landscaping, brick patio with garden seating, comfortable dining lobby and dining room. I was warmly greeted by the hostess and server. As the only dining patron at 7pm on a Tuesday night, I had my choice of tables. I considered a cocktail, but since there was no bartender, decided on a glass of Cabernet from the limited wine list. The first thing I noticed on the menu was higher prices than what I expected. Apparently they've changed their menu from the ones pictured below. No $16-$18 entrees on this one. They are all in the $24-$36 range. (Shouldn't that be "$$$", instead of "$$"?). I thought, well this is more than I'd usually spend on a mid-week business dinner but I'm the only one here and it must be amazing, so let's start with the asparagus bisque, which was outstanding, followed by the crawfish etouffee. The etouffee presentation was nice, and at $24, the most reasonably priced entree on the menu. Unfortunately, it was so salty that I couldn't eat it. The server, who was clearly new, but very nice, offered to have something else prepared for me. This time I went with the chicken, which was fine, but not "$26 fine". After another glass of wine, and an excellent white chocolate bread pudding, I left full and satisfied, but in no rush to return. This just didn't feel like a $60 dinner. We stayed here and ate here. We had dinner on a Thursday night. Food was excellent. I had the asparagus soup, chicken piccata and bread pudding. My boyfriend had the gumbo, catfish, and trifle. Everything was wonderful. They were very busy with a large party but they kept us updated throughout the meal so it was alright. We had breakfast here too which was pretty good.
