I am actively boycotting Walmart at this time ~ not just the Rocky Mount, NC location, but ALL locations. I feel sorry for anyone that feels the need to work there, due to the fact that they are not being paid a substantial living wage. I believe most employees with families are also receiving food stamps because they cannot earn enough to feed their families!
Why? Because Walmart does not pay them enough... either they are not getting enough scheduled hours per work week, enough money per work hour, or a combination of both. They are all kept as part time employees in order to maintain that status quo and to deny them any health coverage/benefits.
Elderly employees are hired in order for Walmart to purchase life insurance policies on them which Walmart then names the corporation as the beneficiary upon their death! A practice, which as amoral and unjust as it seems, is not illegal! Banks do it all the time.
When a new Walmart wants to build in a city, they will proposition the government of that city and ask for a tax deferment. Most for the time it will be for a period of 5 years. That means that for a period of 5 years Walmart will not pay any taxes to the city ~ during that time all of the small businesses will go out of business because they cannot compete with Walmart. After the 5 years (or 10. depending on the original agreement) when the deferment runs out, Walmart will go back to the city officials and ask for another deferment.
If the city declines, Walmart can then threaten to leave the city. Since now the city is dependent on Walmart (because all the small businesses have gone out of business, and all they have left now is Walmart) the city is stuck between a rock and a hard place. So, they can cave in and give Walmart another tax deferment, and for another 5 to 10 years yet again go without collecting ANY taxes from this huge, greedy, evil corporation, or stand their ground, let them leave town and have zero businesses in town with which to have commerce with for the townspeople.
When you shop at Walmart your money leaves your local economy, goes somewhere else and lines the pockets of a rich family that does not care anything about you, your family, or your town. When you shop at a local business, your money stays in your local economy, circulates in your town, supports the people in your town, and helps you, and your family. People do not realize that by shopping at Walmart they have "saved" themselves into a recession.
Many also do not realize that they are not automatically getting the best deal just by shopping at Walmart! I promise you ~ I have done a TON of price comparisons and I have found SO many great deals at many other, better stores than Walmart. Stores that have kept my money from the evil fat Walmart cats pockets, and I am proud of that. Sure, it takes work... it is so much easier to roll a cart through the "Supercenter" where you can find just about everything at your fingertips,... BUT I find it much easier to sleep at night knowing I am doing something albeit I am only one person against a tide. Maybe if by you reading this, YOU might try doing the same?
Maybe it could catch on... if so, you could tell someone, and that person could get another, and that person could get another, and so on.... Every journey begins with the first step.
