They brought the veg out and it was supposed to be peas, cabbage and Swede mashed with carrot but it was just peas and cabbage, although there was a crusty smear of what may have been Swede and carrot on the side of the dish...not very appealing. The roast potatoes were very soggy, not browned or crispy at all although the turkey was cooked well. All in all, a disappointing experience and no attempt by staff to make it better, no one checked in again with us, I think they may have been embarrassed, I know I would have been.

You need to have a word with your staff, they need to be more flexible. Need to realise what is good for the customer is good for their wages.

I arrived for a business lunch at 12:50pm. We were sat immediately, as we had reservations. 12:55-drink orders placed 1:00pm-drinks arrive (one wrong) 1:20-waitress finally returned for food order. One person ordered 3 appetizers as a meal, but requested it all together (soup, salad, and calamari). No one else ordered any appetizers 1:45-soup and salad come out, separate from everything else 2:00-some of the food comes out. My order is partly wrong, more on that later 2:05-remaining food comes 2:15-we finish eating 2:25-we finally get the waitress to pay the bill Really? 90 mins for a lunch service? 2 tables were sat, served, and cleared while we waited for food Food: I ordered the shredded BBQ chicken with roasted root vegetables instead of chips. The sandwich was 3/5, but I got the chips. And the root veg. At least I got the food I ordered, but they sill got it wrong and we paid extra for an additional side. I wouldn't return, but as I'm typically on the receiving end visiting customers in this area I will provably be back. Hopefully they redeem themselves.

Somethings could easily be rectified, like the outside needs a good sweep and tidy there is litter and weeds everywhere and the building from the outside looks run down and would benefit from some decorating. The inside is shabby and does not always look clean which can be off putting. Really sorry to have to write this but I do think if you take some of this on board the business would really benefit.

It's a useful stopping off point to explore this beautiful part of Dartmoor and South Devon. Very near to Burrator Reservoir which is a lovely place to walk around. UPDATE DECEMBER 2008: Having had another meal there this month, I have now heard from the landlord, a very helpful man who is committed to customer service, and he has assured me that many changes are being made to further improve the restaurant. Maybe we just have terrible pub food in the US, but I would consider this pub food gourmet and made with love. I had their fish and chips and it was a legit entire fish fried golden brown. I subbed onion rings for fries bc I honestly couldn't stomach another "chip" in the UK. I'm tired of fried potatoes, sorry. So this entire fish was not the frozen, breaded blocks of fish you get in America. I felt my coronary arteries occluding after eating 25% of my fish and after one onion ring so I had to tap out. But not before I devoured the mushy peas- bc it's almost like mashed potatoes, except green and not potatoes. Husband had the beef shin special which was delicious and odd (I can't say I've ever had shin served in the US... it doesn't sound appetizing but it's pretty tasty). We had drinks to start and let me just say I got schooled on proper gin drinking- I'll be sure to consume my gin and tonic in a bowl, double shot gin, and plenty of ice. I had a fantastic meal. This place gets busy so make a ressie ahead of time. These country roads in Devon are a little treacherous for this California girl, but if we return I would definitely make a trip back here.

For mains we ordered Lentil Cakes with Spicy Salsa and Mozerella glaze (how can you have a mozerella glaze?) and my husband ordered Roast vegetable and Mozerella Cake with tomato salsa. Both of these arrived and appeared to be frozen veggie burgers which had been deep fried into a mush, covered with tonnes of fake mozerella cheese, I'm not sure what it was, but it was not mozerella, served with tasteless undressed iceberg and tasteless tomatoes, and a salsa. Priced at £9.50 and £8 respectively, this was overpriced, we did consider going to another place with meals priced at around £5 but thought we'd get something more for our money here. You just cannot charge almost £10 for a deep fried veggie burger and salad!

The China House is not Chinese, but rather named so because it used to be a factory where they made, you guessed it, china! As such, the atmosphere is quite cool. The wait staff was friendly and helpful (they even stored and brought out a birthday cake that we'd brought along). The menu offers a variety of options, all at very reasonable prices*. Our party ordered anything from steak to chicken pot pie to lamb to duck and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal. Top it off with some nice wine and/or hard cider and you've got yourself a delicious meal at a very reasonable price. The China House is definitely a place to check out for dinner if you haven't already. If I ever find myself back in Plymouth, I'll be sure to stop by here again! *Note that when I say reasonable prices I mean so in GBP and not converted to USD, which unfortunately came out to be over 160% higher while we were there.
