Once a humble collection of three silver miners' cottages, it became a pub in 1857 and is now cosy and full of character, with a wood-burning stove, exposed stonework walls, beamed ceilings and flagstone flooring, our beer garden overlooks the river & the views are extraordinary! We're really passionate about using locally sourced ingredients; all our food is freshly home-cooked using seasonal local produce: our popular daily menus of fresh local produce comes with impeccable local credentials (locals speak of our seafood-based mains in hushed tones of reverence) & are served by our very friendly & most welcoming team of staff. We specialise in providing an excellent local pint: a good range of beers & specially selected real ales, all the ales and ciders are sourced from local brewers, alongside a happy mix of customers and warmly welcoming licensees. Renowned for our live music offering & the convivial chatter, the musicians & Bands in the area often perform an intimate gig of an evening. Check out our Facebook page for information on upcoming performances and Open Mic nights.

Although we never tried the food here at the Walkhampton Inn, I have to give it 5*. My wife , two…read moreyoung daughters and myself popped in for a drink at the end of October 2010, whilst going for a walk from Yelverton. We had already re-booked our lunch at The Rock, Yelverton, so it was pointless sampling the food. Walkhampton is a quintessential Devon Village, absolutely gorgeous. Next to the pub, there is a little stream and old stone bridge, where we took some photos, and had we not been pushed for time, would gladly have spent a few hours there. As soon as we walked through the door, the aura, warmth and friendlieness of the place just jumped out at you. There were a great selection of local real ales on sale, and as I had never tasted any of those particular beers, the lovely barmaid ( sorry I have forgotten your name, but you were wearing a Union Flag tee-shirt, and very attractive ) offered me a free sample to see which one I would buy. I then got chatting to her, and one of the very friendly locals, and told them I was a Plymouth Argyle fan, and travelled across from Northern Ireland at least three times a year. The offer of a free sample, was just typical of English country people, especially Devon people, and it is little touches such as that, which go a long way. The log fire in the bar, was another warm, welcoming touch, to match the hospitality of the staff and locals. Argyle aren't doing so well as I write, but I hope to be over again before May, and will definately be back to the Walkhampton Inn, and will be spending more time, both in this fantastic pub and village. My two daughters, the youngest eleven months at the time, were made more than welcome. A true example of the Best Of British.

This used to be a brilliant place for food, but then it was taken over (I am not sure how many times) and it has not been good since. I thought having fish and chips would be a safe bet, but they managed to ruin it. The fish was overcooked and the chips were not good either. They might improve, as long as people give feedback.

Somethings could easily be rectified, like the outside needs a good sweep and tidy there is litter and weeds everywhere and the building from the outside looks run down and would benefit from some decorating. The inside is shabby and does not always look clean which can be off putting. Really sorry to have to write this but I do think if you take some of this on board the business would really benefit.

Just wish the portions for the veggie meals were larger - they are small compared to the large plate of fish/gammon, peas and chips which my relatives have. We have also stayed here in one of the four-poster bedrooms which was a lovely treat and breakfasts are provided of course. It's a useful stopping off point to explore this beautiful part of Dartmoor and South Devon. Very near to Burrator Reservoir which is a lovely place to walk around. UPDATE DECEMBER 2008: Having had another meal there this month, I have now heard from the landlord, a very helpful man who is committed to customer service, and he has assured me that many changes are being made to further improve the restaurant. I look forward to eating there again next year and writing a new review then.
