Set in the…read morestunning Tamar Valley village of Bere Ferrers, on the banks of the River Tavy, The Olde Plough Inn dates back to the 16th Century. Once a humble collection of three silver miners' cottages, it became a pub in 1857 and is now cosy and full of character, with a wood-burning stove, exposed stonework walls, beamed ceilings and flagstone flooring, our beer garden overlooks the river & the views are extraordinary! We're really passionate about using locally sourced ingredients; all our food is freshly home-cooked using seasonal local produce: our popular daily menus of fresh local produce comes with impeccable local credentials (locals speak of our seafood-based mains in hushed tones of reverence) & are served by our very friendly & most welcoming team of staff. We specialise in providing an excellent local pint: a good range of beers & specially selected real ales, all the ales and ciders are sourced from local brewers, alongside a happy mix of customers and warmly welcoming licensees. Renowned for our live music offering & the convivial chatter, the musicians & Bands in the area often perform an intimate gig of an evening. Check out our Facebook page for information on upcoming performances and Open Mic nights.

Child friendly - no specific children's menu but happy to adapt adult meals and provide additional plates. Happy to provide milk rather than teh ubiquitous Fruit Shoot. Nice cosy restaurant area or there are tables where you can eat in the bar. Sunday lunches are superb as are the steak and kidney pies and the puddings are amazing. Good beer too. Also have accommodation which I've heard is very nice but haven't seen myself. Central village location, easy parking.

They arrived with not a potato rosti in sight; they were deep fried breadcrumb feta parcels with a sweet chilli dip. For mains we ordered Lentil Cakes with Spicy Salsa and Mozerella glaze (how can you have a mozerella glaze?) and my husband ordered Roast vegetable and Mozerella Cake with tomato salsa. Both of these arrived and appeared to be frozen veggie burgers which had been deep fried into a mush, covered with tonnes of fake mozerella cheese, I'm not sure what it was, but it was not mozerella, served with tasteless undressed iceberg and tasteless tomatoes, and a salsa. Priced at £9.50 and £8 respectively, this was overpriced, we did consider going to another place with meals priced at around £5 but thought we'd get something more for our money here. You just cannot charge almost £10 for a deep fried veggie burger and salad!

This change has brought a breath of fresh air, the welcome is again warm and friendly, the food exceptional, gone is that massive menu of countless items which were only possible with the help of a freezer and microwave, never a good combination! Now the menu is manageable and cooked to order by a more than competent chef, for the first time in a long while we see a pass with heat lamps to keep the food hot a sign of a chef who cares about his creations enough to serve them hot and fresh, he does not disappoint either it really is exceptional food, hot, fresh and well presented but more to the point it tastes amazing. The price, we'll give it a try and you decide, we think it offers fantastic value for money and is run by a team of caring professionals so it is back on our hit list "must do" places our only worry is that too many will agree and we won't just drop in but have to book. Well done all at the Church House Inn for bringing this diamond its sparkle back.

This is possibly the oldest inn in England, dating from 1028, however it started as a hostel to house the masons who were building the church next door. The menu is excellent and the food has never let us down. The menu is suplemented by an enormous daily specials board with the accent on fish and game. There is a good choice of real ales and some of the other fizzy stuff for people who have lost their sense of taste. The wine list is extensive and contains some really good, reasonably-priced stuff. As can be imagined in view of the age of the building, the inn has a great traditional feel. The latest landlord is a clone of his predecessors in that his welcome is warm and his patience long well Judi always changes her mind at the last minute! So on your next visit to Devon, set your satnav to this lovely old inn. It's popular, though, so I would recommend that you book.
