A pleasant surprise on a misty autumn day along the Bridgewater Canal…read more While, catching up with some folk who live in the area, we strolled along this canal. I was also geocache hunting and managed to find two - hurrah! After watching a local footie game for a few minutes and then marveling at a model steam railway track (the train was not running unfortunately), we then stumbled upon The Brew Boat which was moored up on the canal. We sat down, as we thought it would be rude not to. We shared some wonderful homemade cakes - the brownie a highlight! And a couple of us had some steaming hot coffee. Perfect to warm the cockles. When we were done, we cleared our table and happily strolled home. A real treat on a cool foggy day on the canal.

Well they do say every day's a school day…read more We learned something we didn't know here; we both simultaneously thought that the milk in our coffees had turned (flat white & cappuccino £3 each) but the manager advises it's the complex quality of the exceptional coffee used, so next time it'll be espressos as milk doesn't add sweetness here and I avoid sugar. The manager offered to make fresh coffees and kindly explained about the quality of their coffee, supplied by Dark Woods Coffee and suggested this coffee ain't Costa - I do agree. My new coffee tasted identical to the original but my wife thought hers less 'sour'. Dark Woods provide the coffee and hand roast their beans on a 1950's Probat drum roaster. They are top notch on the environmental and social impact and certified B Corp - 5 green stars here. When tasting think terroir, varietals and process. I had the chestnut & wild mushrooms with garlic & herbs on organic sourdough supplied by an artisan maker. This dish was well balanced, delicious and a decent portion. My wife had the salmon bagel with cream cheese and scallions. She declared it delicious too (salmon delicately smoked by the Manchester Smoke House and bagel baked perfectly by the Bread Factory, Manchester). The sparkling water came well chilled and in a recyclable bottle. We were seated out back at a wobbly table that only required me putting my shoe on the base, the service was attentive, we were suitably distanced from other diners and they genuinely cared that we thought the milk in coffees was off. The place was spic & span clean and with their focus and transparency on quality organic food, preserving the environment (remember folks the earth is our only home) and relying on artisans for produce it's 5 green stars for them too. There are numerous lavender plants in the setting some for sale in pots and quite a lot growing in beds around the grounds. I had a cream tea and it was lovely, fresh hot scone and jam. This place has a really relaxed feel and there were dogs lazing around and waiting to catch any nibbles. The menu included Freshly made Sandwiches. Soup and Desserts.

I hooked myself up with an black coffee and very must enjoyed it. A great house blend with a nice richness to it, made nice and strong. From my fellow yelper I have heard great things about the hot chocolate as well - so I may have to return for a second tasting.

I had a flat white, which is quickly becoming my go to order for assessing the quality of both the coffee used and the skill of the maker. There is something to be said for small boutique sized flat white which you receive from independent coffee vendors. Passion Fruit's flat white was nigh on exceptional and certainly the best I've had from a coffee stall. When done correctly this is one of the few coffees I don't add sugar to, I'm not sure of the technicalities of how this works but I believe it has to do with the smoothness of the microfoam (a slightly snobbish term for the foamed milk which is more than just warm but has less air pushed into it than a cappuccino). An extremely welcome addition to the Altrincham Market especially if you don't want to go into the food hall and sit down but would rather grab a coffee to go and have a wander around the market. I'm not sure if they intend on being a regular fixture of the market or whether they will be appearing around Manchester. But if you see Passion Fruit Coffee around I do recommend grabbing a flat white and a nice big cookie.
