Yasai katsu curry - breaded sweet potato, aubergine, and butternut squash
    James K.

I crave Wagamama food every time I come to Dublin and it usually lives up to my expectations - their food is very consistent and the service is almost always friendly and efficient. This time, I had the yasai katsu curry: "sweet potato, aubergine, and butternut squash coated in crispy panko breadcrumbs, covered in an aromatic curry sauce served with sticky rice and a side salad." It's really good! The veggies are cooked perfectly in their breadcrumbs and the combination of curry sauce and rice is very comforting. The pickles on the salad are also good. They now have cocktails for €5, so I had two of them - the Wine Not and Japanese Passion - and they were tasty but a little weak. Had high hopes for the Wine Not (Absolut vodka, St. Germain elderflower liqueur, and sauvignon blanc) since I'd made something similar at home - but I think it would be better with gin instead of vodka. They now have replaced many of the older communal tables with smaller tables for groups of two or four, for those who want a more private or intimate experience. I'm giving Wagamama 3/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact. They were in the news in 2015 when fish2fork surveyed British restaurant chains for sustainability of their fish selection and suppliers - Wagamama ranked close to the bottom of the pile. However, this was largely due to lack of transparency, and Wagamama has since provided more information to fish2fork: their prawns are from farms that practice sustainable aquaculture; their tuna is the non-threatened Pacific yellowfin (ahi) variety, and they also use tilapia in their menu (a good choice if farmed in a closed system). Fish2Fork have revised their rating to a respectable 3.5 fish (out of 5). As far as other ingredients are concerned, Wagamama still suffers from a lack of transparency. Are any of their veggies or grains sustainably farmed or certified organic? Is any of the meat grass-fed or certified humane? They don't say, and it's natural to assume not. On Glassdoor, Wagamama employees seem to be generally satisfied with their experience working there & the salary/tips are decent (they share tips among all staff). They make a lot of vegetarian dishes and have made great fruit and veggie juices for years. But it would be nice to know more about the ingredients they use - they have more than 140 locations worldwide and need to be more transparent. Interested in writing green star reviews? Chilli chicken ramen

Part of me just wants to give it 2 stars but that's because I am comparing the ramen to ramen I have tried abroad that is far superior. But the flip side is if you don't do that how do the standards ever improve? For now I will stay at 3 until I try more from the menu. I got the chilli chicken ramen. Overall it was so very bland. Not spicy at all. The chicken although moist was as exciting as Sunday mass. The ramen was again like listening to a lecture in industrial chemistry (I'm useless at chemistry). All that said it wasn't awful, it was not overly filling and I was hungry so it filled me just right... It was food broken down to it's very basic function to give you energy not pleasure. Staff were friendly, fast and attentive.

Your basic clean and friendly ramen noodle and soup bar in Dublin. Wagamama is a big chain, so don't expect anything special. The food is reliable and reasonably priced. I ordered the chili chicken ramen (see photo) and it was tasty. My friend enjoyed his chicken curry katsu. All tables are communal, which can be a plus or minus depending on your mood. Handy location underneath the St Stephen's Green Shopping Centre. Oh yeah, and there is free wifi:)

An old favorite from living in London, I always have to visit Wagamama when i'm abroad and there's one nearby! The food is consistently good and the menu is big enough to make anyone in our group happy. Service is typically pretty good as well, though sometimes it can be a bit slow when the restaurant is busy. Be sure to order the green tea- it's free and the perfect way to end your meal!

This place is perfect for lunch! Just in front of the theatre and off St. Stephen Green shopping centre. They have a lunch menu and prices are sweet. I really enjoyed the food here. I wasn't familiar with their menu and the staff were kindly enough to go through all the spice- not spice options. And went for the chicken ramen. And Jesus, that bowl was Huge. There was food for 3 people - kidding. But 2 people for sure. I didn't order drinks as I was fine with my green tea. The ramen was very, very good. And super hot! Don't burn yourself! =) My friend had teriaki (?) chicken and looked and smelled great. The place itself is big, despite the first impression because of big long tables in the front. Plenty off comfortable seats at the back

Better than Yamamori, but still not great. After eating at both I decided Dublin just don't have good asian food, which I guess shouldn't surprise me that much. Wagamama is in the basement of some building, so it gets basically no natural light. You also have to squeeze onto benches at long tables, which I'm not a huge fan of. My meal was okay. I ordered chicken curry katsu. It was serviceable, but not nearly as good as katsu meals I'd had in Japan or the US. My coworker likes their ramen, so maybe you'll have better luck with that.

Wagamama is an okay restaurant but not one of my favourite places to get Asian food. I still think that Yamamori Noodles on Georges Street beats Wagamama, hands down. Wagamama's menu is pretty basic, most of it consists of noodle soups that come in really big bowls with wooden spoons. The meals are a bit pricey for what you get: a bowl of broth and a slice of chicken. The selection of fresh juices here is excellent. I ordered a carrot juice and I finished it in two gulps. From where I was seated, I saw the cook make it so I knew it was freshly prepared, none of that pre-made pitcher nonsense. What bothers me about Wagamama is the service. It feels really abrupt and cafeteria style. As the waitress takes your order, she scribbles a number on your paper place mat. About 3 different people deal with you. One person takes your order, another drops down your food and another gives you your bill. It seems disorganised and you don't feel valued as a customer. I'll probably come back to this restaurant but only in another 3 or 4 years.

Firecracker squid...the only thing I enjoyed here!!

With so many other great Asian eateries out there, my meal in Wagamama just left me cold! The duck gyoza were just awful, the dumpling part was cardboard-like in texture and the filing was on the gelatinous side - definitely one to be avoided!! The chicken yakitori skewers we had also had a strange consistency - they were very tough and stringy - not pleasant at all! Faring better was the pork dish we had that was served in lettuce leaves, but it needed more of a flavour punch to be memorable - when watery lettuce is the overriding taste in a dish, it's not exactly a good thing! The highlight of the meal was the firecracker squid, it was seasoned and cooked really well and was the only dish that I'd willingly have again - it was pretty delicious in fairness! We also had a really pushy server who kept at us to order more, which detracted greatly from the dining experience...can't see myself coming back here!

    Pork bulgogi
    Darren C.

Rather than going for a main, we decided to go for a bunch of starters (we had a voucher to blow on €30) as neither of us were particularly starved!! On the whole, it was okay, not great not bad but definitely not the kind of place I'll be running back to. But then I wouldn't scream blue murder about meeting someone here either if pushed to. The wok fried greens and chili prawns were delicious, the pork bulgogi was pretty good, the chicken yakitori was definitely poor and the ebi gyoza was without doubt the worst gyoza I've ever had, hands down!! Also the waitress we had was over the top pushy practically ordering the menu for us. Not something I appreciate I gotta say.

    A Selection of Seasonal Sorbets

Well what a place this particular restaurant. Its actually quite hidden. hehehe. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit their. The staff, were most pleasant. I went along with a group of Vegetarians, that I'm a member of. Following is the meal I had. Cha Han yasai AND A Selection of Seasonal Sorbets When I arrived, I was greeted with a lovely smile and get this, a FREE Green Tea. I must have had about 3 or 4 Green Teas. Imagine that. eheheh. Although the price was on the high side, I was most impressed. Its actually of Japanese Cuisine. Very well laid out. The restaurant in question is underneath Dunnes Stores of Stephens Shopping Center. I asked for a Cha Han, which NORMALLY comes with chicken and Egg something to that effect, however, I was wanting a vegetarian. So I asked the waiter, what would he recommend, he recommended the above WITHOUT Egg, which made it Vegan. I was so delighted with this. I thoroughly enjoyed it. When I think about it, it is well worth the price. VERY filling. Especially with me devouring it. The dish came with as follows: Stir-fried Rice with Fried Tofu MINUS Egg to make it Vegan etc., Then after a few minutes, I got myself a dessert for about €5. Considering the amount I received, I actually thought it was very good value. heeheh. It was fantastic and so tasty. It consisted of Green Tea Sorbet; Mango; Passion Fruit Sorbet. Oh it was so scrumptious. All three were scoops. eheheh

There are reasons I know I'm getting old, aside from the fact that the birthdays just keep crashing…read morein likes waves. One is my failing sight after years of relying on my eyes and my eyes alone to read. Another perhaps less common garden variety is the internal meltdown I face when confronted with a lot of menu choice in restaurants. If you identify with the latter, you may wish to save yourself a lot of hassle and simply choose the set menu here. If not, be warned, the a la carte alternative is complex, and for your own sake don't arrive tired or emotional. This is a prime mental condition eating experience. Famed Dublin restauranteur Dylan McGrath is an ideas man. His restaurants are as much about concept as they are about food, and though I'm sure there's a big heart in there, the head rules. If you want proof, study the menu. Across the top are taste categories (bitter, salty, sweet, etc.). Down the left are dish categories. So you scale down, then across, to see what combination of taste and texture your dish offers. And there are lots of choices. And a huge variety of prices. But what's less clear is quantity. And I was hungry and wanted to know I'd get an oul dinner into me before that difficult hungry phase that reduces my brain to mush and makes me want to howl like a baby. The very friendly waitress reassured us that though the menu seems complex first time round, after you've done it once, it's a breeze. (That's how I cottoned on to the fact that the wait staff here have post docs in maths.) Full marks for trying though. No less than two members of staff talked us through things, and they really did their best - did I sense concern that people are having difficulty getting it? Whichever - in the end, it was all too much for me - cue set menu. So, to my relief, for forty euros, you can certainly expect to leave full, with sushi starters - ok, it's not called sushi, it's the long one with the piece of fish on top of the rice (though more wasabi, please) -,delicious miso with clams and those delicate long-stemmed mushrooms that definitely have a name, beef skewers with rice (too much rice already) and potato main, and desert. The food presentation is beautiful, served on marble slabs and in delicate ceramics, with a Japanese-influenced simplicity. I thought the restaurant was Japanese from the menu but see from the website there are Spanish and South American influences too - not very obvious to me but then again I flunked the menu test. The sushi that isn't sushi was yummy, especially the turbot which was a smoky hit of flavour, and the sea bass, with a smooth texture that melts on the tongue. The beef is served on a mini-BBQ which, like the mushrooms, has a proper name. (The only problem with this method of on-table serving is being smoked out of it by the table next door who's got too much fuel on the fire.) If you want your steak more than medium rare, just cook on. My steak was a slightly mixed experience being a bit fatty, though my partner didn't have the same issue. Desert was ginger panna cotta, with melon granita, which was light yet intense in flavour and delicious. We had tried to book Rustic Stone, the restaurant downstairs, but it was full and they suggested we try Taste. We didn't know it was Japanese-influenced and I think they took this on board upon seeing our menu-bafflement and offered a glass of wine on the house. Fair enough. If I returned I'd be armed with a more rested brain (like I'd give it a full day off beforehand, take it to the pictures, buy it flowers, tell it it was looking great) and I would square right up to that a la carte menu, look it in the eye and plainly demand to know its tofu options, the brute, and I wouldn't take no for an answer. The Japanese are masters of simplicity, so ultimately I agree if for different reasons that Taste is not a Japanese restaurant. But the food largely made up for it, the service was good, it's a relaxing place to eat, and if the head wins over the heart, there's no denying it's a decent head. If you don't believe me, just look in the window where its image hangs pride of place, presumably so you know who best to talk to if you need anything explained.

Coincidentally, I had a hankering for sushi on the first night and so after snagging a reservation, off we went to Taste. The restaurant was located on the third floor of Rustic Stone. We were seated at the sushi bar for dinner. The bar itself was different from those that I've experienced in the US where the cooking area is lower so you have a view of what the chef is making; however, the bar seating at Taste was also way roomier than most in the US. My sister and I opted for the €60 omakase - I requested the umami miso and the duck broth, while my sister had the regular miso and the salmon broth - and added on some toro nigiri. We also ordered cocktails - the Eastern Promise and the Gin Garden - which were excellent. The meal was excellent! The nigiri combinations were sometimes surprising but they worked well. The quality of the fish was also very good. I loved the broth and cooking the duck breast myself - it was so rich and the flavours were deep and well-developed. For the "light dessert" they brought out three options: a cheesecake, a coconut ice cream, and a ginger flan. The cheesecake actually had this odd cheese (not cream cheese or ricotta) taste but my sister and I were obsessed. Minus one star for the service because although everyone was super super nice, it was slooooooow. Our meal took about 3 hours. Not that we minded but just be wary that you might be here awhile! However, the meal meal was excellent and my sister and I agreed that between us there was nothing on the menu that we wouldn't order.
