    Over-salted Kimchee Dumplings
    Adam D.

This is a review for the Hong Kong BBQ catering truck at Merrion Square. Was there at 12:40 on a Thursday and they were already out of Chicken Dumplings (their #1 menu item). Ordered Kimchee Dumplings instead. The woman taking my order tried to push the duck on me and the next 6 people in line; I guess the duck wasn't selling well. They have a high counter and a pay-terminal with a screen that points upward. Basically you can't see it. When I was trying to read the total the woman kept barking at me "Tap your card! Tap your card!" and I was like, "tell me how much it is first." Seriously tell the person ordering what their total is before demanding money. It's basic customer service. They weren't really prepared to serve Kimchee Dumplings and 3 customers behind me received their food before my order was filled. The Kimchee dumplings were WAY over salted and barely edible. Will not go back.

It was okay. I love duck! For me it was great just a little bit fat, too much oil in it. Pricy for what you get. Its great, cozy and quick! Half chicken and 1 plane nudles was 16€ no drinks. We shared it but it wasnt enought for 2 people :( That means u would spend more than 30 € for dinner and lunch for 2. They are busy, and dont really speak english - so be quick abd straight forward when u order. Also u can get boneless duck for about 2€ extra, i think.

very very busy when we were there but the food tasted absolutely amazing. Their crispy pork belly was so crunchy and yummy, it was served with noodle as well and the amount was huge for one person like me. They also have bubble tea too and it was alright.

Are we on Fade St or Hong Kong!!

This started out so well. They've done a great job with decorating the place; a nice combo of modern & striking graphics, with old school Chinese style decorations, and of course, the glistening ducks hanging from skewers, waiting to be devoured. As with many before me, I was excited by the surroundings, and had high hopes for what was to come. The staff member I spoke with was very friendly - what could possibly go wrong? My order was a small one as I was really just after a snack, so I got a side of crispy duck pancakes which come with Hoisin sauce and spring onions. I love duck pancakes, but these poor lads were a pretty poor attempt. Three tiny wraps that looked more like sad cold little papery fingers, containing bits of fatty duck, drowned in sauce, with one tiny limp piece of spring onion which one would assume was initially included for a bit of crunch.. I ate it, but only cos I was hoping to convince myself that it was going to be nice in the end. It wasn't. Boo urns. Back to the drawing board Duck!

Very fatty, not a lot of meat and bland rice and vegetables. I had high hopes.

Having waited and waited, speculating anxiously outside the Duck doors, I am both sad and sorry to say that I have been monumentally disappointed. What can only be described as a jazzed up but very average Chinese takeaway, Duck did little for me, proving to be style over substance in the truest sense. Entering the place, all good. The delicious looking duck hanging on the wall really gets the belly grumbling. I stood as my girlfriend ordered a small portion of it with half rice/ half veg and sauce. When it came to my turn I found that they did not take card so ran to find a machine. This, I soon found out, was a lucky escape. I came back to find my girlfriend chewing on a bone which contained barely any meat. "How is it?" I asked eagerly. So... the duck was nothing but fat, and not the tasty fat that you know you shouldn't like but do; the really fatty fat that you actually cannot stomach. The veg tasted of nothing, as did the rice which had no seasoning whatsoever. The 'sauce' was soy sauce. Beyond disappointing. I really wanted to love this place, I was genuinely so excited. But unless I hear good reviews from others in the coming months, I won't be returning.

Really just thrown in there - no presentation whatsoever - taste doesn't make up for it...

I was really, REALLY hopeful for this place to be good - had it recommended to me by several people - but when I finally did visit it was SUCH a letdown! Started out well enough, with a guy walking out the door while we were reading the menu saying "Best duck in Dublin!" So we looked at each other, laughed, and decided to go in indeed. The place is small, decorated well enough with bird cages as light fixtures which I thought was kind of hilarious and quirky! Then it all started to go downhill... I must have run over the guy behind the counter's cat or something on the way in. That's the only way to explain how unbelievably short and grumpy he was with both myself and my date. We were ordering and the words wouldn't be halfway out of our mouth before he'd interrupt demanding to know what sides we wanted. Somewhat dismal really - the food wasn't steaming hot which was a bit of an issue especially as we had to run out to get cash (they don't take card) so was barely warm by the time we got back to eat. The traditional duck was not bad - but really wasn't the showstopper it should have been for a place called "Duck." It was served on a bed of noodles which were halfway between crispy and just plain dry. The BBQ pork was much better, really tender and flavorful, but despite ordering it on fried rice what we got was half a serving of overcooked veg on top of what was most definitely steamed rice. The sauces on the table (plum and chili oil) were uninspired and when we asked if there were any other sauces available, the attitude... Won't be coming back any time soon, you can walk 10 minutes to Neon and get better atmosphere, service, quality, quantity and value for what you pay.

BBQ roast duck on rice, regular size. Done like how it's supposed to be done if you were in Hong Kong or Vancouver!

First things first: the bad reviews on this place do not make any sense. A little background: I was born in Hong Kong, raised in Vancouver, Canada. Both places are meccas of Cantonese cuisine, of which BBQ duck is a specialty of. Vancouver is one of the best places for Chinese food outside of Hong Kong...so I do know what I'm talking about when I'm talking about good Cantonese Chinese food. Had the Duck on Rice. It's done right. BBQ duck on a bed of rice with a single bak choi...that's pretty much how I grew up eating such a meal! The duck was fatty in parts (as expected) and there are parts where there was more spices (which would make it salty). Both things are to be expected when having roast duck! People who complain about this do not know what a real roast duck is like. Also, roast duck, Cantonese style is not about a "crispy skin". It's all about how juicy and flavourful the meat is. Yes, you do want a good roasted skin, but that's not the key. If you want crispy skin, get a fried duck and don't expect it from a HK-style BBQ joint. Removed one star because they didn't have a heater on in the winter. Could've used a bit more warmth in the place. But overall clean, thoughtful, and nice place to eat in. Will be coming back to this place to try out the other BBQ items. Likely nothing in the pre-made stirfry section though...BBQ is where it's at :)

    Honey ribs and traditional duck
    Florence S.

We were wandering in the neighborhood with my boyfriend and it had been a long time since we wanted to stop in that restaurant. When we arrived in front of it it was still closed, but already smelling good. I checked on yelp to know on what time it would open and I admit that when I saw the notes, it scared me, I even thought a moment about going our way to another restaurant. But I was really craving for duck, my boyfriend for ribs, and the low prices (compared to the other restaurants around) decided to nevertheless give it a try. So we got around in the neighborhood for about 45 minutes and then came back, at this time they were already a few peoples inside. We got in, I took the traditional duck, and my boyfriend the honey ribs, both in small sizes. It was really nice because for every order, you can get an apple for free. We both really enjoyed our meals and were definitely full enough after eating it. The duck I had was really good and I really don't understand the rate on this restaurant's page, I had traditional duck in many other restaurants (first time in Dublin thought, the other ones were in Paris or China) and this one wasn't a bad one... I would go back there for sure, I think it was worth the price. I only remove one star because I would have liked my meal to be a bit warmer, and maybe one or two more pieces of meat, would have been nice because three of it were a bit small and fatty (which is part of this dish I know), but still, I can't really complain, I was full while leaving the restaurant anyway. PS : the duck isn't buy already cooked (as we can see sometimes in some restaurant) because I actually saw them doing some in the kitchen behind

I really want to like this place, I love duck and the place looks great. However, I was a little disappointed. It was near the end of the day and there wasn't enough duck left for a full serving, so I got a mix of duck and pork ribs. The duck was very tasty, but the skin wasn't crispy at all. Even though I had asked to have it with vegetables, there was very little veg (loads of rice though). I think Duck has a lot of potential and my experience may be because it was so close to closing time. They have put thought into what people want, knowing a lot of Irish people's dislike for meat coming on the bone, they had boneless duck breast on the specials board. The traditional roast duck, like all good meat dishes, came on the bone :-D I will be back to give this place again though......

Roast duck and BBQ pork on rice.

Excellent roast duck and bbq pork! These guys know what they are doing and making Chinese BBQ food the proper traditional way. The duck is moist and juicy with the right amount of seasoning. The BBQ pork is moist but would like a bit more sweet seasoning sauce. This restaurant takes you back to Hong Kong or a Cantonese restaurant in Vancouver. I will be making this a regular visit on my travels to Dublin.

Like others I hope this place gets better. They are friendly and it looks quite nice etc. if a bit "chain" or pre fabricated but at least it is clean. I ordered the small duck and rice. What I got was plain rice with one tiny piece if pak choi and some tasty looking roast duck on top. A bit more veg and less rice would be better, I heard others asking for that. The duck was tender and tasty but had too much carcass bone in it. In china town London they remove most of the bone. Rice needed a bit of love also. Hope they step it up.

There are reasons I know I'm getting old, aside from the fact that the birthdays just keep crashing…read morein likes waves. One is my failing sight after years of relying on my eyes and my eyes alone to read. Another perhaps less common garden variety is the internal meltdown I face when confronted with a lot of menu choice in restaurants. If you identify with the latter, you may wish to save yourself a lot of hassle and simply choose the set menu here. If not, be warned, the a la carte alternative is complex, and for your own sake don't arrive tired or emotional. This is a prime mental condition eating experience. Famed Dublin restauranteur Dylan McGrath is an ideas man. His restaurants are as much about concept as they are about food, and though I'm sure there's a big heart in there, the head rules. If you want proof, study the menu. Across the top are taste categories (bitter, salty, sweet, etc.). Down the left are dish categories. So you scale down, then across, to see what combination of taste and texture your dish offers. And there are lots of choices. And a huge variety of prices. But what's less clear is quantity. And I was hungry and wanted to know I'd get an oul dinner into me before that difficult hungry phase that reduces my brain to mush and makes me want to howl like a baby. The very friendly waitress reassured us that though the menu seems complex first time round, after you've done it once, it's a breeze. (That's how I cottoned on to the fact that the wait staff here have post docs in maths.) Full marks for trying though. No less than two members of staff talked us through things, and they really did their best - did I sense concern that people are having difficulty getting it? Whichever - in the end, it was all too much for me - cue set menu. So, to my relief, for forty euros, you can certainly expect to leave full, with sushi starters - ok, it's not called sushi, it's the long one with the piece of fish on top of the rice (though more wasabi, please) -,delicious miso with clams and those delicate long-stemmed mushrooms that definitely have a name, beef skewers with rice (too much rice already) and potato main, and desert. The food presentation is beautiful, served on marble slabs and in delicate ceramics, with a Japanese-influenced simplicity. I thought the restaurant was Japanese from the menu but see from the website there are Spanish and South American influences too - not very obvious to me but then again I flunked the menu test. The sushi that isn't sushi was yummy, especially the turbot which was a smoky hit of flavour, and the sea bass, with a smooth texture that melts on the tongue. The beef is served on a mini-BBQ which, like the mushrooms, has a proper name. (The only problem with this method of on-table serving is being smoked out of it by the table next door who's got too much fuel on the fire.) If you want your steak more than medium rare, just cook on. My steak was a slightly mixed experience being a bit fatty, though my partner didn't have the same issue. Desert was ginger panna cotta, with melon granita, which was light yet intense in flavour and delicious. We had tried to book Rustic Stone, the restaurant downstairs, but it was full and they suggested we try Taste. We didn't know it was Japanese-influenced and I think they took this on board upon seeing our menu-bafflement and offered a glass of wine on the house. Fair enough. If I returned I'd be armed with a more rested brain (like I'd give it a full day off beforehand, take it to the pictures, buy it flowers, tell it it was looking great) and I would square right up to that a la carte menu, look it in the eye and plainly demand to know its tofu options, the brute, and I wouldn't take no for an answer. The Japanese are masters of simplicity, so ultimately I agree if for different reasons that Taste is not a Japanese restaurant. But the food largely made up for it, the service was good, it's a relaxing place to eat, and if the head wins over the heart, there's no denying it's a decent head. If you don't believe me, just look in the window where its image hangs pride of place, presumably so you know who best to talk to if you need anything explained.

Coincidentally, I had a hankering for sushi on the first night and so after snagging a reservation, off we went to Taste. The restaurant was located on the third floor of Rustic Stone. We were seated at the sushi bar for dinner. The bar itself was different from those that I've experienced in the US where the cooking area is lower so you have a view of what the chef is making; however, the bar seating at Taste was also way roomier than most in the US. My sister and I opted for the €60 omakase - I requested the umami miso and the duck broth, while my sister had the regular miso and the salmon broth - and added on some toro nigiri. We also ordered cocktails - the Eastern Promise and the Gin Garden - which were excellent. The meal was excellent! The nigiri combinations were sometimes surprising but they worked well. The quality of the fish was also very good. I loved the broth and cooking the duck breast myself - it was so rich and the flavours were deep and well-developed. For the "light dessert" they brought out three options: a cheesecake, a coconut ice cream, and a ginger flan. The cheesecake actually had this odd cheese (not cream cheese or ricotta) taste but my sister and I were obsessed. Minus one star for the service because although everyone was super super nice, it was slooooooow. Our meal took about 3 hours. Not that we minded but just be wary that you might be here awhile! However, the meal meal was excellent and my sister and I agreed that between us there was nothing on the menu that we wouldn't order.
