Basically your standard Caltrains station. Efficient service, open spaced, limited guardrails / etc., ample parking, few amenities (no F&B), limited bathroom options, and generally gets the job done when you want to go from point A to point B. So not much (except ample parking) if you are expecting to grab a bite, etc. (although plenty of options in the neighborhood). Also, like many places in the U.S. the station may seem relatively understaffed. Other than that, trains themselves are often much more spacious, roomy, and sometimes just plain empty compared to elsewhere in the world.

Thought I would share some tips for someone who doesn't ride frequently. 1.) Clipper If you use a Clipper Card, when you tag in, it will charge you the FULL AMOUNT first. Once you tag out, it will "refund" you the difference. Example: Origin Station (Tag in) = San Francisco = Charge $14.70 Destination Station (Tag Out) = Sunnyvale = Refund $6.75 Total = $7.95 I was really confused by this at first since this is not how BART works where there is no charge at first and a charge after you exit. I definitely messed this up and even had to call Clipper customer service to help me fix one of my rides. 2.) Parking I thought there was ample parking at the station when I went but other reviews says it's difficult. I didn't have any issues here. 3.) Cleanliness For some reason this station was pretty dirty. There were homeless remnants (beds, alcohol, clothes) all over the elevators and trashcans that it felt kind of unsafe. However, when you get to the tracks with the other riders, it was much better. 4.) No Shade This station has like zero shade. You might find some minimal shade in places but it's virtually zero. Wear a hat, sunscreen, or even use an umbrella to block out the sun or rain if its raining.

I'm on the peninsula side so it made since for me to drive to this station and then take the orange line to Levi's stadium. This station shares it's parking with the Caltrain station that's on the same stop. $6 flat fee parking for the whole day even though I was only there for 2-3 hours tops? That's a win. The orange line was there to so I didn't have any delays getting to the game either. It's great that they take Clipper Card too since I didn't have to buy a separate card just to ride the VTA.

I simply stood in an empty train figuring that eventually the doors would close & we'd be in motion. After 15 minutes, we were on our way. The trip to downtown San Jose from Mtn View takes a solid hour and is not for the hurried. However, I'm glad to both not have driven and paid 2.00 one-way for my troubles, so the slog of a journey was worth it. I spied bike parking (four slots only) for those of us two-wheeler types in each train car. It's a nice gesture, but doesn't seem enough. VTA lightrail is tidy and spacious. I have to say it reminded me of the solid public transport systems in certain European countries I've visited and I was impressed. The clientele, like society at large, is a mixed bag. I had a few crazies on my round trip journey today, but managed to just ignore their rantings. Bart/Caltrain habituees: VTA lightrail is like riding a bus; tap in at boarding, but don't, like I stupidly did, tap out.

They also have a race lift for helping passengers on wheelchairs to get on the train. There is a café on site that was opened when I was here on a Saturday around noon. They have several garbage cans and the station looked very clean. I also noticed that there is no easy way to go from one side of the station to the other, the only way to cross is by walking all the way to Fremont Boulevard and then crossing there. There are parking lots on both sides of the railroad tracks and they are separated by a fence so like I said, if you need to go to the other side, just walk all the way to Fremont Boulevard and then cross. You have to pay for parking and they have machines where you can pay by using a credit card. They also have a bicycle parking locker and you can pay at the storage container. also, I did not think it was very easy to tell whether trains were running on time or not. There was a sign that was getting updated, but I still found it somewhat confusing. I think it's probably easier just to check the Amtrak app.

If the train is coming, you'll need to wait for the bus by the benches away from the bus stop sign. The horn is 80+ dB which your iPhone will make you aware of if you stand by the bus stop sign when the train's horn is blasting and you'll get an excessive noise warning on your phone. I haven't gone on the train but it looks convenient for commuters.
