After a string of mediocre pizza experiences in London, I decided to take on a challenge to try every slice I came across to determine if it was chance or if Londoners simply don't know how to make pizza. I think it goes without saying that I was drinking when this occurred. Luckily, I finally stumbled upon Voodoo Rays. Hip atmosphere with funky pizza decor, several creative slice options, and patio seating, open late. As for the pizza itself, the first slice was incredible with a chewy crust, ample sauce, and flavorful cheese. The second, a spinach-ricotta slice that was heated to order, was hard and crunchy and not nearly as good. Rounding up for the cool funk factor. Still undecided whether the UK knows how to make pizza (Neapolitan style excluded from this discussion), as this place clearly pushes itself as an American-style spot. read more

Located in Shoreditch near Box Park. The place is really poppin'! Lots of people inside and outside on the patio seats. The staff is really great and fast. Only downfall is that the pizza was a bit cold. They didn't have plain pepperoni, so I ordered one that had goat cheese and tomatoes. It was tasty but could have had a bit more flavor apart from the goat cheese creamy flavor. Apparently they get even more crowded at night! Especially after the bars close, this place turns into a mad house! Good lunch option if you're in Shoreditch. read more

Wanted the midnight slice but wasn't here at midnight so of course I settled for something different. A lovely special of Dusty Springfield. Not a folding pizza as its a more sturdy pizza than you get in NYC and not like italian ones. I'll admit - I've had better pizza. The crust could be puffier and they could be a bit more generous with the cheese. But the toppings are interesting and there is something for everyone - there's even the Queen Vegan (Napoli sauce, fresh tomatos, mushrooms, artichoke, red onions, jalapenos and herb gremolata). My personal favourite is the Buffalo Margherita (buffalo mozzarella, marinated tomatos, tomato sauce and basil ). With a slew of good Italian style pizza joints in Shoreditch (Pizza East, Amici Mei, Rosso Pomodoro), Voodoo Ray's fits just right in. It serves New York style thin crust pizzas with toppings that are quite different from what the others have to offer. It is also the only place in Shoreditch that does pizza by the slice. But I don't think that's really important in the larger scheme of things. What is important though is that they make a good pizza--nice thin crust--and the toppings are those that are typically found on the otherside of the pond--salt beef and saurkraut (Rubin), pepporoni, etc. I think one slice would just about make you feel satisfied, but if you really want to be happy, get at least two. We ordered the cumberland sausage, buffalo margerita, artichokes & olives, & the rubinesque. None disappointed. All in all, good fun. read more

I'm a big fan of Ray's when I'm in this part of Shoreditch. I really love the format where the pizzas are mostly cooked, and then they pull the slices you order out and they finish them in the oven. If you're vegetarian or vegan, this is THE best pizza place. Fully half of their pizzas are either vegetarian or vegan. And it's not bland, boring, predictable stuff. It's interesting and thoughtful variations. They're quick, they're fresh, and they're totally friendly. read more

I have to admit I was apprehensive, being completely spoiled for choice for amazing pizza in Brighton. I was concerned that nothing would come close to the sourdough goodness that you get at Pizza VIP, but Voodoo Ray's is excellent! They appear to have a choice of around 8 or 9 MASSIVE pizzas to choose from, you can either buy it by the slice or buy a whole one. I think they were 22"!? Anyway, I opted for a slice of the King Tubby ((fennel & chilli sausage, covalo nero, marinated tomatoes, caramelised onions) which my friend highly recommended. I'm not one for sausage on pizza usually, but GIRL!!! This was the ONE!! Fennel and sausage just works so well! The toppings were generous, it came piping hot and was the perfect serving size, I was comfortably full. I'll definitely be coming back to try the rest of the menu. read more

A number of reasons why Voodoo Ray's is awesome: a) they have a great vegan pizza b) their food waste (dunno why they'd have any!) is composted c) they only print receipts if you want one d) the pizza is fantastico! I have now been here a couple of times and normally find I need 2 slices to fill me up. The pizza tastes great and reminds me of New York though there are some very 'Shoreditch' toppings on sale! I will perhaps say it is on the "side" of pricey - I think up to a £1 less would be more on point but it is Shoreditch and I'm still gonna go if I ge a particularly strong craving! I have to be honest - I visited with the intent of having a particularly satiating pizza event and quite ignorant of the differences between italian and american pizza. Having eaten italian all the time this was something completely different. I chose a half-and-half pizza with a meaty mix on one and a mushroom-vegetable combo on the other. The latter was particularly great as beaten eggs were used instead of sauce providing a very different event. This place taught me that I most definitely prefer the italian pizza with more complex, softer style, more aromatic and, well, italian character. Having said that Voodoo Rays is all about the American pizza style and that is delivered with excellence (I provided myself a a bit of google edu afterwards). So, from now on only italian pizza for me but well deserved 5 stars for Voodoo! read more

So I'm in Shoreditch... in the boxpark which is essentially one of this areas monuments. So I go for what appears to be in culture keeping - the Rubenesque. A delicious slice with salt beef, sauerkraut, Emmental and Russian dressing... and I have to say that I'm in love. I adore the thinness of the base and how crispy it is and how it's a well-made slice. The topping is also amazing, a great flavour explosion. And if this isn't your thing, they also have other equally interesting options which include Vegan. So many places you go people just throw toppings on, but each piece is soundly constructed with care. Prices are from around £3.70 upwards for a slice. Not unreasonable as it's a good sized slice. Stools are your options inside although outside they have tables, However this isn't really a sitting down, dinner sort of place, more of a quick bite on the go. Located on the ground level of Shoreditch's Boxpark, Voodoo Rays gives people the same pizzas as in their Dalston flagship location. There are 12 main pizzas to choose from, plus seasonal pizzas which are in rotation, so you will have plenty to choose. I went for the Hot Mix 5 (which had pepperoni, jalapenos, chilies, red pepper) and was great and had just come out the oven at the right time. I wanted the King Tubby but would have had to wait 10 minutes, well maybe next time. You can either get individual slices or the whole pizza pie (22 inches) if you have having a party. Slices start from £3.50 or £22 for the pie. The Boxpark location seems more cramped than the Dalston location, but there is outside seating so it evens out. For all you Deliveroo fans, they do deliveries from there so you don't have to go there to enjoy their pizzas. read more

Voodoo rays would seem like an ideal place to grab a slice of pizza in the way home from drinking, however not really a proper place for dinner. Pizza slices were around £4 per slice, but they were not justifiably big. Additionally where we were there at about 745 pm they had few pizzas left to select from, which was disappointing. The meatball one was tasty, as was the pesto and artichoke heart one, but overall there are far better deals out there in the box park. Would have loved to try the spicy pizza. Their canned beer selection seemed decent. Were also disappointed that the Yelp check in deal was only for the first 25 people. You know those questions 'if you could eat one thing forever what would it be' my answer would always be pizza and the reason for that is exemplified at Voodoo rays. Thin New York style pizza that has quality ingredients and a decent price. If you're looking to take a group? It's not the best place as there is mostly stool seating and it's not that big but if you're looking to stop for a quick bite before heading off other places then it is definitely worth a visit. They do sides like mac and cheese if you're into that sort of thing with a pizza but really... the pizza is just great. Most slices come in around £4.50 and the toppings are flavorful and plentiful. Some purists will say a sauce to dip your crust in is wrong but if loving their garlic mayo is wrong then I don't want to be right. Stop by! You wont regret it. Used Deliveroo on a lazy evening and was pretty darn pleased. Voodoo's pies aren't perfect, but they're unconventional and well beyond what you'd get from a chain. Pluses include variety and quality of toppings, order speed and cost. Minuses are the crust was a bit too charred on the edges and therefore brittle instead of chewy. It'd be great if there were an option for custom or editable orders, but I suspect that's more of a limitation in the Deliveroo app than with Voodoo, and I can handle the tradeoff for not actually putting on grown-up clothes to get myself dinner. :-) read more

Sneaked in a workday lunch with ava and suveer at Voodoo Ray's, in box park, shoreditch. Wasn't really feeling like pizza, but am glad we ate there! Super yummy pizza by the slice, lots of options, quite a bit of space (surprisingly). I liked the menu painted on the tiles, nice touch. They also do a lunch deal of any slice, a salad box, and a drink for 5.99, I think? I had the rubenesque and the green velvet, two slices out of sheer greed when one would have been plenty. Liked the rubenesque better. Delicious crust, make sure you eat the edge with the thyme-infused olive oil. read more

Pizza by the slice is the ideal option if like me you love pizza so much you can never decide on one topping out of all of the options on a menu. At other places I always order a half and half pizza (after spending hours debating between meat feast or farmhouse or veggie supreme or chicken BBQ) but here you can choose pizza by the slice so you can have 4 different slices if you have a big appetite. I'm afraid to admit I only managed 2. But the slices are HUGE, I have an excuse, I tried the classic margherita (excellent value at £3.30) and a veggie slice as I thought green veg may add a bit of vitamins and some of my five a day to a meal consisting of pizza. They were DIVINE! I wished I had room for a meaty slice so I could see the quality of the meat, but my stomach let me down. The reason I'm not giving this more is because the Shoreditch branch isn't very big so you feel a bit cramped. I've noticed it is available on Deliveroo if you live / work in the area, so I'm considering a takeout of multiple slices. Pizza always tastes so good the next day, doesn't it?! read more

It's OK Pizza. It's nice to have a Pizza-by-the-slice option. The flavors are OK and the Crust is OK. I mean it's not bad, but I was a bit disappointed. They could easily get 1 or even two more stars with any of the following: - Just a tad steep in price (over £4 a slice) for the size. Drop the price or increase the size of the slice (which would be preferred). - More and tastier cheese please! Don't skimp out on the cheese for the love of cheese! - Like the crazy pizza toppings, but have a couple basics (like Italian sausage or pepperoni only with larger slices of pepperoni). As for crazy pizza ideas, let me recommend Mac'n'Cheese Pizza. Just trust me. This location in particular is conveniently located by the Overground Station at the very end of the box car center. It only has bar benches and isn't good for groups (nor is there any room if you order a whole pie to share). Go, try it, enjoy it, but this isn't the holy grail of American style pizza in London yet. I'd always wandered past Voodoo Ray's and double-tapped plenty of Instagram shots of their delicious pizza - but I'd never actually stopped to try it for myself. Until last night! With an 'in' and 'out' type system and inside seating, Voodoo Ray's is a convenient dining experience serving up individual pizza slices at £4 a portion. All the pizzas are out on display so you can see what you're getting before you choose, something I really liked. After ordering, we paid and were impressed with how quickly our slices appeared before us, all cooked and oozy and YUM. I opted for a Hot Mix (pepperoni, jalapeño, red chillies, red pepper, mozzarella, tomato sauce) which was excellent. Thin crust. Great dough. A generous helping of cheese and tomato sauce on the base, topped with plenty of pepperoni and jalapeño. My only slight gripe would be with the 'slab' of red pepper on the top, which would have been nicer chopped up into smaller bits. The pizza wasn't actually quite as hot as I was expecting but still a bit mouth-tingling on the spice levels. For drinks, you can choose from plenty of beautifully-canned beers, including Beavertown and good ol' Camden Hells. There are also frozen margaritas on offer, and a range of dips for the pizza crust. If you're in need of refuelling before a Shoreditch night out or during a day of shopping and exploring, Voodoo Ray's is cheap, convenient and tasty. read more

This place makes me feel like my palate is completely different that most people, or maybe I'm just not hipster enough to enjoy this place. First the pizzas. They totally lose points as they have their entire list of pizzas up on the wall, but they only have about six of those for you to actually purchase. So if you want to try the interesting one with stilton, you can't get it because they didn't make any. Fail. They were advertising not one, but TWO Christmas specials. Neither of which you could actually get. Get your act together. Why advertise it if you're not actually going to have it available? I ended up ordering the Reubenesque (because I love Reuben sandwiches) and the Hot Mix 5 (because I like it spicy). My partner ordered the same (because the rest sounded boring and unoriginal. Meat mix? Yawn. I can get that sort of thing anywhere). Then I wanted a beer. What choices do I have? About four IPAs and four lagers. Yep! They have about eight beers and no variety. Kind of like the pizzas. Plus they choose the most hipster beers available. The guy at the register was like, "But Pabst Blue Ribbon!" Really hipster dude? Pabst is crap. It was crap 20 years ago when I was drinking, it was crap 10 years ago when it because big with the hipsters when I was at university, and it's still crap. So I got a double shot of tequila. And their mixer selection also sucks, so I also got a blood orange san pellegrino to mix with it. We also decided to get the three different dips: Barbeque, Garlic Mayo and Chili. Honestly, the slices don't look very nice as all. They come out on plates and it LOOKS like crappily reheated slices. At least in NYC or the states the slices LOOK tasty. It's a good thing we did get the dips, because the Reubenesque was nothing like a Rueben. Or it tasted nothing like one. The beef had no flavor. The cheese had no flavor. Luckily the dips added some nice flavor to the pizza because otherwise it's just bland toppings on top of bland, flavorless crust. The spicy slice was much better, but nothing that you couldn't get as a spicy pizza anywhere else. The chili dip was a disappointment as the spice in the barbeque was much nicer. I also enjoyed the garlic mayo. My partner's pizza had a giant hole in the crust that was covered by the toppings. Pizza fail. Seriously, with the multitude of places nearby you could go for food, Voodoo Ray's should be bottom of your list. read more

For the UK the pizza is not bad. The sauce is nice got lots of flavour and I can't complain about it. However, price is a big issue. For the majority of the slices it costs £4 which is an absolute rip off price. It claims to be a New York style but it doesn't reflect new york slice prices. In New York, you can get amazing slices that are better than voodoo rays for $2.75 which makes it hard to justify paying £4 for a slice. I would recommend yard sale pizza as for double the price of a slice you can pretty much get a whole pice that I believe is better quality. If they drop the price by £1.50 I would recommend this place more. read more

Voodoo's is in such a great location, perfect for scoffing a quick slice before meeting friends for drinks after work. They also offer a great selection of toppings. Shrooms is my favourite. Last night I checked in with Yelp and managed to use the free slice voucher with no problems. It was lovely to see people sat on the benches outside in the sunshine. read more

Decent cheap pizza available late night - good for what it is. My friend and I grabbed a slice on the way back to our Airbnb while visiting London. Being from NYC, we are no strangers to the beauty of a late night pizza slice and were excited to pass by this funky little shop. For those with dietary restrictions, this is definitely the pizza place for you as they had many vegan and GF options. I, being a greedy pizza hoarder, got two slices - some type of four cheese slice and the other being the green velvet (artichoke hearts, green olives, tomatoes, mozzarella, tomato sauce and pesto). The cheese slice was pretty good, albeit not too hard to mess up a slice with multiple kinds of cheese on it. I had super high expectations for the green velvet, as I love every single topping on there, however, it fell below my expectations. The combo just didn't seem to gel together the way I would've hoped and ended up being incredibly salty. But, let's be honest...
