    Underground bookstore

Ah, Von's... A place that holds a very special place in my heart. I've been going here for over a decade, and I love how they've evolved and stayed true to their original nature, all at the same time. I'm convinced that as all this new development shoots up in the area, and Von's will still remain a staple of the Purdue landscape and culture. The shop is actually a variety of shops that flow into each other. The first door opens to the bookstore, a maze of delightful new and old books for the mind to wander. Among the thousands of books are little gifts and journals that appeal to the literary buff. As you pass the doorway into the next shop, you'll find my favorite part - the bead shop. There are more beads and gemstones than you can fathom crawling the walls and floors of the shop, making you feel like you wandered into another world. Again, there are exotic and not-so-exotic gifts and trinkets mixed in with the beads, lining the walls with a variety of knick-knacks for your inner hippie to enjoy. If you want to make your own eccentric and earth-friendly jewelry, this is the best place to go in the entire state of Indiana, in my opinion. Over the years, the other side of the bead store has become a clothing boutique. It used to be gift cards and novelty gifts when I first started coming here years ago, but I'm glad they updated this side to something more relevant. You can find some super cute boho fashions as well as accessories. Before you go into the next shop above, don't forget to check out the basement! Down the stone steps, like entering a dungeon, you will find the used bookstore. Another incredible labyrinth of books and comic books that will make any book nerd have a mental orgasm. You could literally spend hours in here. I have. It's glorious. Back upstairs we go, to the next shop: the record store, as I used to know it. Now it has made way for more novelty gifts, comic books, clothing, posters, etc. There is still a record section where they sell vinyl, CDs and tapes, but not as many as the used to have. Still, it's worth checking out. As you can see, I just love Von's. It's one of the best kept secrets of Purdue, and, in my opinion, in Indiana. It should be a historical landmark. Next stop...Harry's! See ya.

Beautiful layout and selection of unique goods. I often visit just to see something new, and find inspiration for crafts. I frequent the gemstone section, but there are a small selection of unique clothes, incense, baubles, wooden boxes, anything you probably wouldn't find in a usual store. Planning on visiting again!

Fun fun fun! I love Von's. Pretty much three stores rolled into one. They all connect together. A bookstore on one end, jewelry/bead shop in the middle and finally a cd/record store. If you're a student at Purdue searching for books sometimes it's cheaper to head over to Von's rather than Follet's across the street. They have a 10% discount card (you have to purchase it for 5 bucks, but in the end you save money always- since textbooks cost so much). If you're a bored Purdue student or just like making crafts, check out the jewelry shop. I spent many hours in here purchasing beads and then making funky necklaces back in my dorm room. The music shop is superb as well. They always have the latest indie titles in the window, plenty of used and new cds, dvds and even fun tshirts and posters to clutter your college dorm walls in the back. Von's is a fun place to spend an afternoon with friends if you have some down time between studying at Purdue.

The sign is somewhat unassuming but you can spend hours in here if you have a mind to!

I'm sure the vintage apparel is all fine & dandy, as others have commented, but what I'm interested in is their smoke secsh. I've bought a few things from them in the past, beginning with a blue Sharpstone grinder I got three years ago. The threads have gotten worn down since (and I lost the little scoopie, sad day!) so I ventured back downstairs to peruse their wares. I found a medium-sized silver Sabertooth grinder for $25, which was less than other smoke shops in the area. The employees have always been helpful and chill (a prerequisite to work here, no doubt), and they treat their customers well. A few Aprils ago, on 4/20, they gave away free handpipes for anyone that made a $10 purchase, which I thought was awesome. They have a nice assortment of vapes, waterpipes, and one-hitters, too. Good hookah collection and lots of shisha to choose from, if that's your thing. Even after 'shopping around' for the lowest prices on pipes and whatnot, Amused still had the best deals in West Lafayette. Cool people and quality products at a reasonable price point. They've definitely earned my repeat business.

The location is convenient and there was plenty of street parking. When I walked in, I was greeted by someone who I believe to be the owner. I felt very welcome. Sometimes if you go into an older auto parts store (small NAPA stores) you have a bunch of "regulars" staring at you as you try to explain what you need without really knowing what you need. I did NOT feel like that and was thankful for that. There were two pipe smokers and one cigar smoker taking advantage of the lounge area. I inherited my Dad's pipe lighter that I never knew that he had. It turns out the flint had swelled up inside and needed to be "drilled" out and replaced. He did some simple maintenance on it and told me what I needed to do. He was able to recommend a lighter fuel and Zippo flint that would make my lighter work. He was very professional and at no time was I treated like someone who doesn't know what he is doing; which I do not! It was a pleasant experience and I look forward to going back to take advantage of their large selection of pipes, cigars and tobacco.

I didn't feel compelled to write a review until an incident today. As many know, theres a new craze surrounding the stuffed animals known as Squishmallows. Unfortunately, I find myself to be in that craze and absolutely adore them, and have for a couple years now. Around this time of year is when they start releasing the Halloween styles at retail locations and if you don't get one the day they put them out, then you might as well not bother because you wont get one at all. A couple weeks ago, I decided to check this walgreens for them. When I first walked in, I didn't see any out on the shelves but I asked an employee in the section if she knew if there were any in stock, since there were a whole bunch of boxes. She checked and there were, and she seemed pretty happy to help. Then the manager walks up, says to me and my partner very grumpily that they don't have any. However, the previous employee had literally started opening the box with the Squishmallows inside. We weren't trying to bother anyone, I always do my best to be polite and try not to interrupt anyone doing their current task. I would expect this attitude from a teenage employee... not someone who's at least in their early thirties and in a higher position. The employee put out all the new arrivals they had gotten and i got one squishmallow between my partner and i. One. Thats the back story for todays incident. On my way to do errands, we stopped in again just to see. We hadn't been having much luck but I thought I'd see anyway. To our luck, they had the one me and my sister in-law have been looking for! They had 6 in stock and we were originally only going to get two, but decided on three because we thought another friend might want one. We walk to the register and the cashier politely tells us that she can only do two per purchase, so we asked if it was okay if we could pay separately for them and she said that was fine. The manager was eavesdropping and told us no and he said we could only get two since we were together. We explained we were paying separate and his attitude kicked in. He said something along the lines of "No, you guys came in together. You're together. I told you guys this last time!" Huh?? We didn't argue, we put the third back. First off, i completely understand restricting purchase quantities, theres a huge scarcity at the moment. However, there was no need for attitude on either occasions. We werent being over bearing, we werent running into the store crazy and snatching all of them up, we dont go in every day asking them if theyve got any in. There was no reason for him to be so outwardly annoyed with us specifically. Secondly, he had not said anything of the sort the last time we visited, if not the shear evidence being that I'd only bought one single squishmallow on my last visit. TLDR: there's no reason to be rude to customers because they come in looking for a product your store sells. Its unfortunate if others have been rude or crazy towards you and your employees, but its highly unfair to treat anyone coming in like they just caused you the biggest inconvenience of your life just by existing.
