Lots of wonderful side dishes, drinks, and other offerings as well. Pretty much a one-stop shop for food for a social event. Friendly, knowledgeable help. They clearly don't hire from college IT departments, because these folks actually make eye contact and smile, and come around from behind the display counter to hand you your purchases, instead of throwing them over the top. Obviously, somebody here knows something about gracious service. You need to be warned - their dill-ranch pretzels have been classified as highly addictive. I have been assured, upon asking, that the necessary licenses and 12-step recovery programs are in place.

Coming from Los Angeles, I've always had a pretty high standard for pastrami, especially the thick,…read morepiled-high New York-style sandwiches I grew up expecting. Minnesota has disappointed me more than once. Too often the pastrami is sliced thin, served light, and feels more like an afterthought than the main event. That changed today. I stopped at St. Paul Meat Shop and ordered their smoked pastrami on rye with mustard. Simple. Exactly how a pastrami sandwich should be. And damn, they got it right. The pastrami was smoky, tender, flavorful, and there was actually enough meat on the sandwich to call it a pastrami sandwich without laughing. This was easily one of the best pastrami sandwiches I've had in the Twin Cities, and honestly, it may be the best. If you've been looking for a proper pastrami sandwich in Minnesota, this is the place.

A small deli-style experience with a few tables. There's a picnic table out back if you prefer the quiet. Get your meats and cheeses here too. Burritos were on the menu too during my stop but not sure they are a permanent item. It's not quite a 'deli' with all the deli things. It's more of a meat-forward deli worth a stop. Parking in back is almost always available with an entrance door also in back.

Dear Von-Hanson's,…read more Is it wrong that I love the smell of meat markets? I mean sure, home baked cookies and the tops of babies heads smell good too, but there's something about that smell of dry rub seasoning melding with fresh meat that's sort of intoxicating in a completely carnivorous sort of way. I live downtown so there's unfortunately not a super convenient VH location for me to patron more frequently. But whenever I head out to my friend's house in Woodbury, I always make a stop here. Hands down, they have the best marinated chicken breasts in the Twin Cities. They trump Lunds/Byerly's in the categories of: - Sheer size (one breast is easily enough to feed 2 adults) - Seasoning variety (garlic, bbq, cajun, dijon, lemon pepper, tomato basil to name a few.) - Price (consistently less per pound than the Lund's equivalent) And we haven't even talked about the beef, the chops, the sausage or the jerky, which are all super high quality. Von Hanson's also gets an extra star for selling Heggie's Pizza out of their frozen coolers. It feels sacrilegious to enter a meat market and buy a frozen pizza, but if you've never had Heggie's you'll have to trust me that this is no Tombstone. By far the best frozen pizza on the market. (I know because we did a taste test of 8 frozen pizza varieties last month: http://bit.ly/bjmZu2) Von Hanson's - you consistently make me the star of my summer BBQ circuit (i.e. my patio) and for that I salute you! Love, Holly

Being 5 minutes from our destination we decided to give it a try And boy are we glad we did! The sammiches weee absolutely outstanding. They come with a smorgasbord of toppings, so you need to peruse the list to determine if there is anything you DON'T want. We had three turkey sammiches and one ham, and everyone chose to modify their toppings slightly (note/ if you desire tomatoes, those need to be added as they oddly aren't on included in the smorgasbord ‍) I opted for everything - perhaps a bit anxious about how well all the flavours would mesh (mayo, mustard, horseradish, oil and vinegar along with various toppings). But you know something / it worked really really well. We also chose the potato salad as a side and it was also quite tasty. Lighter, northerly mayo's. While the sammiches weee being constructed we perused the offering in the attached grocery. Everything oooed fantastic and if we lived Locally, I would certainly be a regular - with an eye to trying many of their offerings beyond the sandwich counter.

You ask a question, they've got an answer. Ask another one, now you're learning about cuts you didn't even know existed and suddenly you're standing there reconsidering your entire weekend barbecue strategy like a man staring at religion through a glass display case. That's the problem with this place. You walk in thinking, "I'll just grab some hamburger and maybe a couple steaks," and five minutes later you want to leave with half the damn store. They've got custom sauces, spices, rubs, marinades, meat enhancements, all the stuff that turns a backyard cookout into the kind of meal where people stop talking for a minute after the first bite. I've been to a few butcher shops around the city, but Ready Meats feels different. No gimmicks. No artisanal nonsense. No guy in suspenders trying to sell you parsley foam for nineteen dollars. Just meat. And people who know meat. Which is kinda the whole point, ain't it?
